This thesis is an attempt to study the role of metaphor in the modern English and American poetry. At first, theories on metarhor are considered in the light of (1) tenor-vehicle relation ; (2) the creative deviation in the use of language, resulting from "linguistic audacity" ; and (3) the contrasting two processes of metaphor, epiphor and diaphor, the former being the process of extending meaning through comparison and the latter, that of creating new meaning by juxtaposition and synthesis. Then, metaphoric tension is examined. It is strengthened in proportion to (1) the distance (or disparity) between tenor and vehicle, (2) the interrelation of epiphor and diaphor, (3) freshness of comparison (or similarity) in epiphor, and (4) abruptness and novelty of juxtaposition and synthesis in diaphor. And finally, tradition in English poetry is pursued in terms of metaphor functional rather than decorative, and the union of thought and sensation. These two characteristics of traditional poetry (i.e. poetry of synthesis) reached their summit in the 17th-century metaphysical poetry. But by "dissociation of sensibility" the tradition was broken in the age of Milton and Dryden, and that discontinuity lasted until roughly the beginning of this century. In modern English and American poetry, however, the tradition has been restored by many factors including metaphor in the modern sense.

지금까지, 언어의 의미화 과정과 정서의 문제, 진술의 분석에서의 정서의 역할, 그리고 시적 진술의 정서 등을 주로 I.A.Richards의 이론과 의미론을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 정서의 내재여부에 의하여 언어적 표현의 여러 양상들이 타당하게 분류될 수 있는 것은 사실이다. 그러나 이 언어적 표현의 존재가치와 진실을 다만 과학적 판단기준으로 밝히려는 태도는 진술의 정서적 힘을 지나치게 강조하는 것에 못지 않게 유해한 것이다. 이 양극이 잘 절제되므로써, 그 중간단계의 넒음과 가치있음이 동시에 인정되어야 한다.
