This study was designed to investigate how a communication intervention program, with a substantial evidence base established with families in the U. S. would be accepted and used by Korean mothers of young children with developmental delays. The intervention program was comprised of five communication facilitation strategies: pause, descriptive talk, imitation, expansion, and environmental arrangement. Three boys and their mothers completed all phases of the study. A within subject multiple baseline design across behaviors and a nonconcurrent multiple baseline design across dyads was used in this study. The results demonstrated that all three mothers learned to use the intervention strategies correctly, increasing both accuracy and use of strategies across all conditions. Two of the three children showed clear increases in their rates of verbalizations and all the children increased the percentage of initiations and the length of turns. The findings of this study are consistent with recommendations to involve parents in interventions that support teaching communication skills during naturally occurring routines, and that facilitate the development of positive parent‐child interactions. They also support the transferability of an evidence‐based communication intervention from the U. S. culture to Korean culture.
