        User-Oriented Energy- and Spectral- Efficiency Tradeoff for Wireless Networks

        Conventional optimization designs of wireless networks mainly focus on spectral efficiency (SE) as a performance metric. However, as diverse media services are emerging, a green wireless network, which not only meets the quality of experience (QoE) requirements for users and also improves energy efficiency (EE), is the most appropriate solution. In this paper, we firstly propose the unit QoE per Watt, which is termed QoE efficiency (QEE), as a user-oriented metric to evaluate EE for wireless networks. We then analyze which is the kind of wireless resource given priority to use under different scenarios to obtain an acceptable QEE. Particularly, power, delay and data-rate related to QoE are separately addressed for several typical services, such as file download, video stream and web browsing services. Next, the fundamental tradeoffs are investigated between QEE and SE for wireless networks. Our analytical results are helpful for network design and optimization to strike a good balance between the users perceived QoE and energy consumption.

        Probiotics Increase Intramuscular Fat and Improve the Composition of Fatty Acids in Sunit Sheep through the Adenosine 5′-Monophosphate-Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) Signaling Pathway

        This experiment aims to investigate the impact of probiotic feed on growth performance, carcass traits, plasma lipid biochemical parameters, intramuscular fat and triglyceride content, fatty acid composition, mRNA expression levels of genes related to lipid metabolism, and the activity of the enzyme in Sunit sheep. In this experiment, 12 of 96 randomly selected Sunit sheep were assigned to receive the basic diet or the basic diet supplemented with probiotics. The results showed that supplementation with probiotics significantly increased the loin eye area, and decreased plasma triglycerides and free fatty acids, increasing the content of intramuscular fat and triglycerides in the muscle and improving the composition of the fatty acids. The inclusion of probiotics in the diet reduced the expression of adenosine 5’-monophosphate-activated protein kinase alpha 2 (AMPKα2) mRNA and carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1B (CPT1B) mRNA, while increasing the expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase alpha (ACCα) mRNA, sterol regulatory elementbinding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) mRNA, fatty acid synthase mRNA, and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 mRNA. The results of this study indicate that supplementation with probiotics can regulate fat deposition and improves the composition of fatty acids in Sunit sheep through the signaling pathways AMPK-ACC-CPT1B and AMPK-SREBP-1c. This regulatory mechanism leads to an increase in intramuscular fat content, a restructuring of muscle composition of the fatty acids, and an enhancement of the nutritional value of meat. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the food science of animal resources and provide valuable references for the production of meat of higher nutritional value.

        Catalytic hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate into γ-valerolactone over commercial Raney Cu catalyst

        An eco-friendly green reaction process was developed to achieve efficient hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate (EL) to γ-valerolactone (GVL) over commercial-available Raney Cu catalyst with H2 as the hydrogen source. Raney Cu presented higher catalytic activity among a series of Cu based and Raney type catalysts. The maximum yield of GVL was 98.3% at 160 °C for 3 h. It was found that Raney Cu had great reusability and could be used at least three times without loss of activity. Moreover, the results of XRD, XPS and ICP confirmed the high stability of the catalyst. A possible reaction pathway was also proposed. Ethanol was the main byproduct in this reaction; this study therefore provides a green and efficient method for the conversion of EL to GVL.

        Development and Analysis of a Two-Phase Excitation Switched Reluctance Motor with Novel Winding Distribution Used in Electric Vehicles

        Two-phase simultaneous excitation mode of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) has been shown to effectively improve the average torque output compared with traditional single-phase excitation mode. But the torque ripple of the two-phase excitation SRM with traditional winding distribution increases because of the inconsistent electromagnetic field. To reduce the torque ripple, a two-phase excitation 8/6 SRM with novel winding distribution is proposed in this paper. The static torques generated by various magnetic circuits are analyzed and obtained to verify the torque increase. Then the electromagnetic characteristics of the proposed SRM are investigated by the numerical calculation method in detail, including flux linkage, inductance, and torque. Finally, an experiment for measuring the SRM static electromagnetic characteristics and dynamic performance is designed and performed based on the novel mode, and the comparing results show that the proposed two-phase SRM is effective.

      • Simultaneous Estimation of Low- and High-Order Functional Connectivity for Identifying Mild Cognitive Impairment

        <P>Functional connectivity (FC) network has been becoming an increasingly useful tool for understanding the cerebral working mechanism and mining sensitive biomarkers for neural/mental disease diagnosis. Currently, Pearson's Correlation (PC) is the simplest and most commonly used scheme in FC estimation. Despite its empirical effectiveness, PC only encodes the low-order (i.e., second-order) statistics by calculating the pairwise correlations between network nodes (brain regions), which fails to capture the high-order information involved in FC (e.g., the correlations among different edges in a network). To address this issue, we propose a novel FC estimation method based on Matrix Variate Normal Distribution (MVND), which can capture both low- and high-order correlations simultaneously with a clear mathematical interpretability. Specifically, we first generate a set of BOLD subseries by the sliding window scheme, and for each subseries we construct a temporal FC network by PC. Then, we employ the constructed FC networks as samples to estimate the final low- and high-order FC networks by maximizing the likelihood of MVND. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct experiments to identify subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) from Normal Controls (NCs). Experimental results show that the fusion of low- and high-order FCs can generally help to improve the final classification performance, even though the high-order FC may contain less discriminative information than its low-order counterpart. Importantly, the proposed method for simultaneous estimation of low- and high-order FCs can achieve better classification performance than the two baseline methods, i.e., the original PC method and a recent high-order FC estimation method.</P>

        Enhance Transparency of Force Feedback Interaction Series Mechanism by SMC Strategy

        To enhance the fidelity of virtual surgery, the force feedback interaction mechanism would simulatethe force information in real surgery. This paper first introduces evaluation methods of fidelity, then it exploresevaluation methods of force feedback fidelity, and put up the evaluation methods and indexes of force feedbackfidelity. In rigid force feedback interaction mechanism, fidelity is mainly shown as transparency. It means thetransfer function of the mechanism needs approach to 1, while friction, gravity, slip of the linear drive and otherfactors would affect transparency of the mechanism. This study introduces a 5-DOF (degree of freedom) forcefeedback series mechanism with long stroke. It discusses gravity compensation and simulation of typical virtualenvironment. It uses sliding mode control (SMC) to eliminate the effect of parameter variety, inaccurate modelingand other factors to improve system robustness. And it adds disturbance observer to the controller to eliminategravity inaccuracy. Finally, it evaluates the enhancement of force feedback fidelity.
