Effect of Various Maximization Agents on Photoallergic Contact Dermatitis in Guinea Pigs

Maximization test was designed to detect the least sensitization potential of haptens. There are several advocated maximization agents such as ultraviolet ray, sodium lauryl sulfate, Freund's complete adjuvant, etc. The present experiment was conducted to assess the comparative effects of these maximization agents on the induction of photoallergic contact dermatitis in guinea pigs. Musk ambrette was employed as a sensitizer of photoallergic contact dermatitis. Harbor's procedure was grossly applied for its induction. For the elicitation, Kim and Houh's method was applied, reversing the order of three different concentrations of photosensitizers advocated by Harber's method, with the lowest concentration applied to a site closer to the nuchal region. The most effective maximization agent observed was Freund's complete adjuvant, followed by sodium lauryl sulfate. UVB was found to be the least effective in this respect. The reaction of Freund's complete adjuvant group was in good accord with the experimental result shown by Harbor et al. However, stronger reaction occurred in the area closer to the nuchal region in spite of the application of a lower concentration and weaker reaction was shown in the area closer to the sacral region with higher concentration. From this experiment it may be inferred that the closer the area to the nuchal region the stronger the reaction occurred regardless of the concentration of a sensitizing agent.
Passive Transfer of DNCB Contact Sensitivity by Allogeneic Spleen Cells in Guinea Pigs

Passive transfer of DNCB contact sensitivity was performed by i.v. injection of spleen cell suspension (1×10^8 /ml in RPMI 1640) into the hind vein of normal guinea pig. Index of contact sensitivity of positive and negative control groups were respectively 83.33% and 8.33%. Transferred contact sensitivity was achieved by spleen cells in guinea pigs, however, the reaction (36.89%) was weaker than that of the positive control.
A Clinical and Mycological Study of Superficial Fungal Diseases

This clinical and mycological investigation was made with 869 cases of superficial fungal diseases and 119 cases of tinea versicolor among out-patients in Dermatologic Clinic. The results were as follows: 1) Common fungal disease was tinea pedis and tinea cruris, and tinea cruris and tinea versicolor were frequently observed in man but chronic paronychia and tinea manus were frequently seen in woman. 2) All of the superficial fungal disease including tinea versicolor was higher in summer and physically active age group, but tinea corporis and candidiasis were predominant under 10 years of age. 3) The higher culture rate was seen in tinea cruris and were frequently cultured with dermatophytes. 4) The most common pathogen in superficial fungal disease except tinea versicolor was T. rubrum. The order of culture rate was T. rubrum, C. albicans, T. mentagrophytes and E. floccosum.
