The adsorption of Trichloroethylene(TCE)vapors on both powder and palletized MCM-48 was measured by using a quartz spring balance equipped in a high vacuum system, Single species equilibrium data show typical IV isotherms based on the IUPAC classification. Equilibrium data obtained were reasonably well fitted to a temperature-dependent hybrid(Langmuir+Sips)isotherm. To investigate the applicability of the hybrid isotherm on the prediction of breakthrough patterns, experimental and theoretical studied were carried out in a fixed bed charged with MCM-48.
Adsorption characteristics of benzene on electrospun-derived porous carbon nanofibers

<P>The adsorption properties of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) carbon nanofibers fabricated by using an electrospinning route were assessed for their applicability as a novel alternative adsorbent. Commercial fiber, A–10, was chosen for comparison. Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and gravimetric techniques were used to examine the porous structure, adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and the energetic heterogeneity of the prepared adsorbent. The nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms showed that PAN carbon nanofibers are highly microporous with small amounts of mesoporous regions. The equilibrium data of benzene was obtained at three different temperatures (343.15, 383.15, and 423.15) K with pressures up to 4 kPa. The data correlated successfully with the Toth isotherm equation. In addition, by using this isotherm model, the adsorption affinity and isosteric enthalpy of adsorption were determined. The results of the isosteric enthalpy of adsorption and adsorption energy distribution tests/equations revealed that although PAN carbon nanofibers have a heterogeneous surface, they seem to be more homogeneous than commercial carbon fibers. Moreover, the mass transfer and thermal desorption results showed that shallow pores contained within PAN carbon nanofibers may be effective adsorbents for removing toxic compounds. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Surface heterogeneity of commercial P-25 and carbon coated TiO2 (CC-TiO2) was investigated on the basis of adsorption isotherms of nitrogen, methylene blue (MB) and bisphenol A (BPA). The generalized Langumir-Freundlich (LF) was used to describe the liquid phase experimental adsorption isotherm data and to estimate the monolayer adsorption capacity. In addition, adsorption energy distributions (AED), which is a linear Fredholm integral equation of first kind and an ill-posed problem, were calculated using the regularization method. Comparative analysis of the heterogeneity of P-25 and CC-TiO2 provided the important clue for understanding the surface heterogeneity.
Mathematical Modeling of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Biofiltration System

In this study, a mathematical model of a fixed bed Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) biofiltration system was developed to predict the organic removal efficiency of the filter. The model consists of bulk transportation, adsorption, utilization, and biodegradation of organics. The variation of the specific surface area due to biofilm growth and the effect of filter backwash were also included in the model. The intrapellet diffusion and the diffusion of substrate in the biofilm were described by linear driving force approximation (LDFA) method. Biodegradation of organics was described by Monod kinetics. Sips adsorption isotherm was used to analyze the initial adsorption equilibrium of the system. The model showed that the organic removal efficiency of the biofilter greatly depends on the parameters related to the biological activities such as the maximum rate of substrate utilization(k_(max)) and biomass yield(Y) coefficients. Parameters such suspended cell concentration (X_(s)) and decay constant(K_(d)) had little effects on the model simulation results. The filter backwash also had no significant impact on the performance of the biofilter.

<P>In this study, we regenerated a nano-structured platinum based spent catalyst by applying thermal gas and acid pretreatment and examined the influence of treatment on the catalytic oxidation of toluene. The spent catalysts were pretreated with air, hydrogen and six different acid aqueous solutions (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, CH3COOH and C2H2O4. The physicochemical properties of the parent and its modified catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, and ICP. The results of light-off curves showed that air and hydrogen treated catalysts were more active than the parent catalyst. In addition, the catalytic activities of toluene oxidation for acid aqueous treated samples were identical with the order of Pt/Al ratio.</P>

<P>Nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and gravimetric methods were employed to examine the structural and adsorption properties of selected adsorbent. The equilibrium data of benzene were also obtained at three different temperatures (303.15, 313.15, and 323.15 K) with pressures up to 7 kPa. The results of nitrogen and benzene sorption isotherm revealed that SWCNTs exhibit type II with the features of type I. The Toth and UNILAN models were found to provide a reasonable correlation between the adsorption isotherm data. In addition, the adsorption second virial coefficient and the isosteric heat of adsorption were determined by using these isotherm models. The isosteric heat of adsorption and adsorption energy distribution indicated that SWCNTs have energetically and structurally heterogeneous surfaces.</P>

This paper is intended to investigate the awareness of the elementary school students about the natural environment preservation. For this purpose, 21 elementary school students from the 5th grade of elementary school located in Gwangju city were selected. Especially, we focused on the students' conceptions related to 1) the environments, 2) the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters and 3) the environmental preservation with the national land development. To evaluate the change of students' conceptions for the national land development, the students were also participated in establishing the plan of the national land development using the model of the natural environment after learning in detail about the natural environments. The results of this study showed that most of the students recognized the concept of the environments as a simple knowledge itself and pollution rather than the protection of environment. In the course of the safe national land development activity to face several natural disasters, the students expressed standardized answer indicating the knowledge based thinking of the environments. According to the results of the environmental preservation with the national land development and the hypothetical project of the national land development, the students did not have enough knowledge for the natural environment preservation although they had understanding of natural disasters and environmental preservation. Therefore, it is necessary to stress affirmative concept for the environment related to the preservation of natural environment. Also we need to develop the syllabus, which is related to the environmental studies, in the elementary educational program leading students to participate in the environmental preservation with the national land development reasonably and practically.
