The Euclid metric is well-known and there are many results on the space with that metric. But there are many other metrics which gives more practical and useful results in the plane. In this paper, we introduce new metric function in the plane, which is more useful in city with subway. Finally we generalize to the general metric space and introduce a new metric on ${\mathbb{R}}^n$.

There are many metric functions in the plane. In this paper we are to classify the metric functions on the plane using two ways such as using sum of distances between some points when start point and end point is fixed, and using area of transferred triangle consisted of distances between 3 points.

Braking distance is a very important factor of the items to evaluate the safety of vehicles. Braking performance of the vehicle is affected by brake systems, tires and road friction characteristic. In this paper, we studied on the tire parameters related with the brake distance of vehicle equipped with ABS system. To achieve this, we developed the braking distance simulation method through multi-body vehicle dynamic model containing brake control logic and tire model, and it"s confidence was verified by outdoor braking test. Also, we analyzed relationship between tire’s characteristic and braking distance by orthogonal arrays based on the DOE(Design of Experiments).

<P>We investigated the subdomain structures of single-layer graphene oxide (GO) by characterizing local friction and conductance using conductive atomic force microscopy. Friction and conductance mapping showed that a single-layer GO flake has subdomains several tens to a few hundreds of nanometers in lateral size. The GO subdomains exhibited low friction (high conductance) in the sp(2)-rich phase and high friction (low conductance) in the sp(3)-rich phase. Current-voltage spectroscopy revealed that the local current flow in single-layer GO depends on the quantity of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, and epoxy bridges within the 2-dimensional carbon layer. The presence of subdomains with different sp(2)/sp(3) carbon ratios on a GO flake was also confirmed by chemical mapping using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. These results suggest that spatial mapping of the friction and conductance can be used to rapidly identify the composition of heterogeneous single-layer GO at nanometer scale, which is essential for understanding charge transport in nanoelectronic devices.</P>

<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>Scanning photoemission microscopy (SPEM) images of a graphene flake as well as the C 1s core level spectra for the mono- and multilayer graphene are measured. The samples with lateral dimensions on the micrometer scale are prepared on a SiO<SUB>2</SUB> surface by direct exfoliation of crystalline graphite. Background: Patients experiencing acute trauma have limited time for their involvement in shared decision making, which may lead to decisional conflict. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether providing audiovisual surgical information can reduce decisional conflict when deciding between surgical and nonsurgical treatment in patients with distal radius fractures (DRFs) and to evaluate factors that may affect decisional conflict. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 50 consecutive patients who presented with acute DRFs and chose to undergo surgery, for which volar plate fixation was recommended. We randomized these patients into 2 groups. The test group was given a video clip of audiovisual surgical information in addition to regular information while the control group was only given regular information. The video clip consisted of the purpose, procedure, and effect of the surgery, precautions and complications after the operation, and other treatment options that could be performed if operation was not performed. At 2 weeks after the surgery, we evaluated patients’ decisional conflict using a decisional conflict scale (DCS). In addition, we evaluated factors that might affect decisional conflict, such as age, dominant hand, comorbidities, history of previous operations, perceived disability, and provision of the video clip. Results: The test group showed significantly lower DCS scores than the control group (19.6 vs. 32.1, p = 0.001). In multivariate analysis, younger age and provision of the video clip were associated with lower DCS scores. Conclusions: This study has demonstrated that providing information through audiovisual media such as video clips could reduce decisional conflict in patients who chose to undergo plate fixation for DRFs. This study also suggests that older patients may need more careful doctor-patient communication as they have more decisional conflict than younger patients.
Optimal Scheduling in Power-Generation Systems with Thermal and Pumped-Storage Hydroelectric Units

This paper is concerned with the unit commitment problem in an electric power system with both thermal and pumped storage hydroelectric unit. This is a mixed integer programming problem and the Lagrangean relaxation method is used. We show that the relaxed problem decomposed into two kinds of sub problems: a shortest-path problem for each thermal unit and a minimum cost flow problem for each pumped storage hydroelectric unit. A method of obtaining an incumbent solution from the solution of a relaxed problem presented. The Lagrangan multipliers are updated using both sub gradient and incremental cost. The algorithm is applied to a real Korean power generation system and its computational results are reported and compared with other works.
