An efficient use of PRAM for an enhancement in the performance and durability of NAND storage systems

Sangyong Lee,Sanghyuk Jung,Yong Ho Song IEEE 2012 IEEE transactions on consumer electronics Vol.58 No.3

NAND flash memory is widely used in many embedded systems owing to such advantages as a small size, shock resistance, and low power consumption. However, NAND flash memory has certain hardware limitations such as an 'erase-before-write' constraint, which creates a long write latency. Therefore, many studies have been performed to reduce the write latency of NAND flash, one of which uses phase-changed RAM (PRAM) as a supplemental device to overcome the disadvantages of NAND flash memory. However, it is difficult to apply PRAM to storage systems owing to its limited density and high cost per capacity. To solve this problem, a novel management scheme for PRAM/NAND flash hybrid storage is proposed. Our proposed method uses limited PRAM space more efficiently by reducing the size of the data to be stored through an efficient compression scheme using differential values and rates. In addition, the proposed method improves the performance and durability of storage systems by efficiently reducing the flash program operation. Our experiments show that the proposed scheme can improve the performance and durability of PRAM/NAND flash hybrid storage with only slight increases in hardware costs.

      • Optimal Design of Moving-Magnet Type Actuators for Optical Disk Drives Considering Effect of Coil Electromagnet

        Sangyong Kim,Myeong-Gyu Song,No-Cheol Park,Jeonghoon Yoo,Young-Pil Park,Kyoung-Su Park IEEE 2009 IEEE transactions on magnetics Vol.45 No.5

This paper suggests a method for analyzing moving-magnet type actuators for optical pickups. To move the objective lens to the desired position, voice coil actuators use the electromagnetic force, which is the force exerted on a charge moving in a magnetic field. When an electric current passes through a coil, the coil becomes an electromagnet by the solenoid effect. This causes the force between a coil electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The force affects flexible modes of voice coil actuators because it is dynamic force with the frequency same as that of a driving current. Therefore, the analysis, which considers both the electromagnetic force and that between a coil electromagnet and a permanent magnet, is suggested. The moving-magnet-type actuator is fabricated and its dynamic behaviors are measured experimentally to demonstrate and validate the analysis method. As a result, it is verified that the analysis method offers more exact simulations than current methods. Finally, the dynamic behaviors of the moving-magnet-type actuator are improved using the analysis method.

      • Progress toward a group B streptococcal vaccine

        Song, Joon Young,Lim, Jae Hyang,Lim, Sangyong,Yong, Zhi,Seo, Ho Seong TaylorFrancis 2018 Human Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics Vol.14 No.11

Abstract

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a leading cause of severe invasive disease in neonate, elderly, and immunocompromised patients worldwide. Despite recent advances in the diagnosis and intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) of GBS infections, it remains one of the most common causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, causing serious infections. Furthermore, recent studies reported an increasing number of GBS infections in pregnant women and elderly. Although IAP is effective, it has several limitations, including increasing antimicrobial resistance and late GBS infection after negative antenatal screening. Maternal immunization is the most promising and effective countermeasure against GBS infection in neonates. However, no vaccine is available to date, but two types of vaccines, protein subunit and capsular polysaccharide conjugate vaccines, were investigated in clinical trials. Here, we provide an overview of the GBS vaccine development status and recent advances in the development of immunoassays to evaluate the GBS vaccine clinical efficacy.

Vol.2011 No.12

There have been researches to reduce long write latency of the NAND flash memory, and one of them is to adopt the data compression scheme. However, the fact that the size of compressed data can be larger than that of original data must be considered when storing the compressed data. If NAND Flash based storage system stores the compressed data without such consideration, the overall performance will be decreased. In order to solve such problem, in this paper, we propose a new technique using the differential data and differential ratio obtained by comparing overwrite data and original data. Our experiment results show that proposed scheme can efficiently reduce the size of data to be stored.

Vol.5 No.6

In this paper, we suggest an object-oriented programming environment with multithreaded computation model on general parallel processing systems. We developed many methods for our environment to be efficient. in complier, the analysis of member variable and method parallelism, and in runtime system, thread/message merging and frame sharing. The programming environment is implemented with MPI message interlace, and its performance is analyzed with executing benchmark programs. The results show that the developed methods have influence on performance improvement, and this improvement can be applied to general parallel processing systems.

Vol.25 No.11

The object-oriented paradigm is ideal for parallel and distributed systems, because users can naturally treat an object as the message-passing unit which is executed concurrently. But, in the object-oriented environment based on multithreaded architecture, the message traffic is heavier than in other environments because of the frequent requests for frame allocation We suggest a runtime model on object-oriented system OOId/DAVRID, which can improve the performance of object-oriented computing in multithreaded architecture. This model supports class inheritance efficiently and improves the object frame allocation and member function call to reduce the message overhead. It also allows efficient access to the mutable member. The simulation results show that the proposed model is superior to a previous model in performance and the performance gain is larger in the application where many objects are dynamically created.

      • Shelf-life extension of preservative-free hydrated feed using gamma pasteurization and its effect on growth performance of eel

        Kim, Dongho,Song, Hyunpa,Lim, Sangyong,Jo, Minho,Song, Duseop,Jo, Cheorun Elsevier 2012 Radiation physics and chemistry Vol.81 No.8

Abstract

Hydrated feed (HF) promotes the growth performance and shortens the feeding time of fish by increasing the efficiency of digestion. However, the shelf-life of HF is a concern due to its relatively higher water content. In this study, radiation pasteurization was applied to improve the shelf-life and microbiological quality of HF for fish farming. Preservative-free HF containing 25% moisture was gamma-irradiated and its microbiological and nutritional properties evaluated in addition to a practical feeding trial carried out using eel. The viable counts of bacteria and fungi in HF were 106 and 104CFU/g, respectively. All coliform bacteria and yeast in HF were eliminated by irradiation at a dose of 5kGy, and total aerobic bacteria were eliminated at 10kGy. The shelf-life of the preservative-free and irradiated (10kGy) HF was estimated as 6 months under ambient conditions. The nutritional composition of HF was stable up to 10kGy of irradiation. Based on a feeding trial, it was proven that eel fed HF had about 20% higher growth rate than that fed dried feed.

Highlights

► Hydrated feed (HF) promotes the growth performance and shortens the feeding time of fish but shelf-life is a concern. ► Radiation pasteurization was applied to improve the shelf-life and microbiological quality of HF for fish farming. ► The shelf-life of the preservative-free and irradiated (10kGy) HF was estimated as 6 months under ambient conditions. ► Eel fed HF had about 20% higher growth rate than that fed dried feed in feeding trial.
