Pseudotumor cerebri is a condition of increased intracranial pressure in the absence of clinical, laboratory or radiological pathology. Spinal intradural hematoma formation after lumboperitoneal shunt (LPS) implantation is very rare, but it can cause sudden and serious deterioration. In this report, we present a patient who developed an intradural hematoma following LPS operation. A 27-year-old male patient suffering from headaches and progressive vision loss was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri. He underwent LPS operation in January 2009. Four hours after the operation, he developed urinary and fecal incontinence with paraparesis (1/5). Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging identified an intradural hematoma at the level of L2–L3, and he was reoperated. The intradural hematoma was removed. Physical therapy was started because of paraparesis. Two months later, the patient’s muscle strength had increased to 3/5. Surgeons must remember that, LPS implantation can cause a spinal intradural hematoma in a small percentage of patients, with catastrophic results.

Background: To identify the potential prognostic role of the neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L) ratio in larynx carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Oncologic archive charts of patients with a larynx carcinoma diagnosis between the years 2010 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed. The inclusion criterion was to be available with hemogram test prior to diagnostic procedure. Patients undergoing septorinoplasty comprised the control group. Results: There were 65 cases in the study and 42 cases in control group meeting inclusion criteria. In general a non-significant increase in N/L ratio was observed with increasing tumor size and stage (p>0.05) in larynx carcinoma. The N/L ratio was found to be significantly higher in larynx carcinoma compared to control group (p=0.004). Conclusions: In conclusion, the N/L ratio was shown to be significantly increased in larynx carcinomas compared to control group. Further studies are needed to assess any prognostic role.

We consider the extended generalized Hecke groups H3;q generated by X(z) = -(z - 1)-1, Y (z) = -(z + λq)-1 with λq =2 cos(π/q) where q ≥ 3 an integer. In this work, we study the generalized Pell sequences in H3;q : Also, we show that the entries of the matrix representation of each element in the extended generalized Hecke Group H3;3 can be written by using Pell, Pell-Lucas and modified-Pell numbers.

Background: c-Kit is a proto-oncogene that encodes a tyrosine kinase receptor (CD117). Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a useful marker for demonstrating thrombocyte function. We aimed to investigate whether c-kit is expressed in benign, preneoplastic and neoplastic endometrial tissues and whether MPV has a relation with c-kit expression and its intensity. Materials and Methods: c-Kit expression was investigated immunohistochemically in 10 samples of normal endometrium (n=10), simple endometrial hyperplasia (5 cases with atypia and 10 cases without atypia), complex endometrial hyperplasia (10 cases with atypia and 10 cases without atypia) and endometrial cancer (EC) (10 cases grade I and 10 cases grade II) and MPV of all cases was checked. Results: c-Kit expression was observed at very low rates in cases with normal endometrial tissues (NE) and in hyperplasia without atypia. c-Kit expression and immunostaining were strong in endometrial atypia and EC. MPV levels of complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (CAEH) (p:0.002), EC grade I (ECG I) (p<0.001) and EC grade II (ECG II) (p<0.001) were significantly elevated when compared with the NE group. Both c-kit expression and intensity of immunostaining had a positive correlation with MPV level. Conclusions: While c-kit expression and intensity of immunostaining were mildly positive in NE and hyperplasia without atypia, they were clearly observed in EC and hyperplasia with atypia. As c-kit expression is related to the mutagenesis a long-term followup may be needed in these cases. A high MPV level may be a good test for demonstrating c-kit expression and intensity of immunostaining.

We consider the extended generalized Hecke groups ${\bar{H}}_{3,q}$ generated by $X(z)=-(z-1)^{-1}$, $Y(z)=-(z+{\lambda}_q)^{-1}$ with ${\lambda}_q=2\;cos({\frac{\pi}{q}})$ where $q{\geq}3$ an integer. In this work, we study the generalized Pell sequences in ${\bar{H}}_{3,q}$. Also, we show that the entries of the matrix representation of each element in the extended generalized Hecke Group ${\bar{H}}_{3,3}$ can be written by using Pell, Pell-Lucas and modified-Pell numbers.

We consider the extended generalized Hecke groups $\overline{H}_{3,q}$ generated by $X(z)=-(z-1)^{-1}$, $Y(z)=-(z+\lambda _{q})^{-1}$ with $\lambda _{q}=2\cos (\frac{\pi }{q})$ where $q\geq 3$ an integer.\ In this work, we study the generalized Pell sequences in $\overline{H}_{3,q}.$ Also, we show that the entries of the matrix representation of each element in the extended generalized Hecke Group $\overline{H}_{3,3}$ can be written by using Pell, Pell-Lucas and modified-Pell numbers.

Background: Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Apoptosis is a necessary physiological process for cell elimination which is very important both cellular homeostasis and cell proliferation and differantiation. Dysregulation can lead to uncontrolled cell growth and tumor development. Survivin, a member of the IAP family, plays a key role in promotion of cell proliferation as well as inhibition of apoptosis in cancer cells. The aim of this study was to investigate whether specific genetic polymorphisms of survivin could be associated with colon cancer development and progression in a Turkish population. Our study is the first to our knowledge to investigate the relationship between colon cancer risk and survivin gene polymorphisms. Materials and Methods: The relation between colon cancer and survivin -31 G/C (rs9904341), -241 C/T (rs17878467) and -625 C/G (rs8073069) polymorphism in promotor site of survivin gene associated with apoptosis was investigated using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Results: Individuals with -31C allele and CC genotype were found to have a higher risk of developing colon cancer (OR=13.4, p=0.01). The -241 CT genotype considerably increased the risk of colon cancer (OR=12.0, p=0.0001). However, there was no significant varaition of the survivin -625 C/G polymorphism among colon cancer patients and controls in our study. Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence that survivin -31 G/C and -241 C/T SNP significantly contribute to the risk of colon cancer in the Turkish population.
