      • Considering Households’ occupation and their view towards forest Conservation

Vol.11 No.3

100 households’ survey was carried out in 2007 in Chitwan to foresee the people’s livelihood and their insight into the forest conservation. This analysis revealed that households’ was mainly survived with multiple livelihood categories where 98% citizens belong to food crops and 92% to livestock husbandry. The households’ income shared by agriculture (crop and livestock), forest and remittance was 37% and 20% respectively. Results further showed that income distribution was somehow equal with Gini coefficient 0.25 than with the 0.37 of landholdings size. But, average per capita income of households was lower than the national standard with 33% of households below the poverty thresholds and 0.0945 poverty gap index. Similarly, 85% respondents assured for the current degraded status of forest and 83% of households for not participated in forest management activities due to low awareness in 82% households. These findings shows the forest assets could be unduly degraded in the past and forest availability which is extracting from the remaining forest is also decreasing in the area. Thus, tendency of forest dependency has been shifting to the small scale farming, other livelihood sources such as local business and services. This information could be useful in planning and decision-making process in searching of better alternative for the local livelihood as well as sustainable forest conservation strategy.

Intelligent Internal Stealthy Attack and its Countermeasure for Multicast Routing Protocol in MANET

2015 ETRI Journal Vol.37 No.6

Multicast communication of mobile ad hoc networks is vulnerable to internal attacks due to its routing structure and high scalability of its participants. Though existing intrusion detection systems (IDSs) act smartly to defend against attack strategies, adversaries also accordingly update their attacking plans intelligently so as to intervene in successful defending schemes. In our work, we present a novel indirect internal stealthy attack on a tree-based multicast routing protocol. Such an indirect stealthy attack intelligently makes neighbor nodes drop their routing-layer unicast control packets instead of processing or forwarding them. The adversary targets the collision avoidance mechanism of the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol to indirectly affect the routing layer process. Simulation results show the success of this attacking strategy over the existing “stealthy attack in wireless ad hoc networks: detection and countermeasure (SADEC)”detection system. We design a cross-layer automata-based stealthy attack on multicast routing protocols (SAMRP) attacker detection system to identify and isolate the proposed attacker. NS-2 simulation and analytical results show the efficient performance, against an indirect internal stealthy attack, of SAMRP over the existing SADEC and BLM attacker detection systems.

      • POPULATION GROWTH, POVERTY INCIDENCE AND FOREST DEPENDENCY IN NEPALESE TERAI

        Menaka Panta,Kyehyun Kim,Hari Sharma Neupane,Chudamani Joshi,Eunji Park 대한공간정보학회 2007 한국지형공간정보학회 학술대회 Vol.2007 No.6

Since the human civilization, people's livelihood is dependent on natural resources primarily on forest. Human dimensions such as population, poverty, agricultural expansion and infrastructure development are some of the underlying factors and their interrelated associations which could play a vital role in deforestation and forest degradation. This process is not only related to the human population but also connected to the various socioeconomic factors. This paper focuses to link the spatio-temporal extent of population, poverty incidence and forest dependency and their severity on Terai forest of Nepal. Secondary data on censuses were used. ArcGIS and descriptive statistics were also used for data analysis. Based on analysis & literature review we concluded that population, poverty and forest dependency have largely expanded over time in Terai and their interrelated associations substantively influence on deforestation. However, the direct relationship of such factors with deforestation and forest degradation found to be incompatible, complex and hard to perceive with fragmented and inconsistency censuses data. So, deforestation and forest degradation issues intertwined with socioeconomic factors need detailed analysis to comprehend, where these linkages are still unravel.

      • Analysis of food availability and food security status in Nepal for forest resource conservation purpose

Vol.2008 No.10

Agriculture and forest are basis for livelihood in Nepal while both sectors constitute around 40 percent of the national product and over two-thirds of the economically active population is dependent on agriculture. However, radical changes in land use, depletion in crops production and food availability are major threats due to loss of soil fertilityand severe environmental degradation In this study, we used time series data from 1986/87 to 2005/06 about food crop production and population published by Government of Nepal, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Central Bureau of Statistics. Descriptive statistics and ArcGIS were used to assess and map the food security status of Nepalese Terai based on the local food demand and supply system. Food supply to demand ratio (FSDR) was the main idea of assessment. Our results showed that out of 20 districts, only 8 districts were categorised under secured food districts whereas 5 districts were still under food unsecured situation. The analysis further revealed that 7 districts had faced food deficit more than 8-16 times during the last 20 year periods. Data further showed that there was surplus food supply relative to the requirements dictated by FSDR. However, the average FSDR was less than 1.2(less than 20% surplus) exploring fact that most of the districts were not producing sufficient food to cope up the food shock and after 1995 it was relatively stagnant Our prediction reveals that food supply in Terai even in the future would remain at almost the same level as now, and there will not more than 16-17% surplus by 2021 considering medium vibrant population growth. The findings thus, indicate that Terai may not be a food secure region in the future, even though the region is considered as a food storage house of Nepal. In addition, this paper suggests ways to make future comprehensive case studies more widely comparable in Terai, Nepal.

      • People's livelihood and their perception towards forest degradation in central Nepal : The households' perspective

Vol.2009 No.9

Forests have been a key component of rural livelihood in Nepal for centuries. The villages around the Chitwan forest corridor depend largely on natural resources including forest which provide basic products for their livelihood. In this study, a field survey of 100 households in Chitwan in 2007 was conducted to analyze the people’s livelihood strategy and their perception towards forest degradation. Results showed that households' was dependent on multiple livelihood categories with 98% belongs to food crops and 92% to livestock husbandry. Almost 34% of household income was shared by agriculture (crop and livestock) and 20% by remittance. Data further revealed that income distribution was somehow more equal with Gini coefficient 0.25 than the distribution of landholdings with 0.37. However, average per capita income of households was only Nrs. 21,117.00 (about US $ 293.00) lower than the national standard and 33% of the households were below the poverty thresholds (Nrs.14, 942/annually) with the poverty gap index 0.0945. Further, 85% of the respondents mentioned that the present status of forest is degraded however 83% of households are not participated in forest management due to low awareness is still prevailing in 82% households. It could be a reason the traditional dependency on forest resources has been shifting towards the small scale farming, business and service because of the shrinkage of forest resources in the study area.

Spatio-temporal Dynamic Alteration of Forest Canopy Density based on Site Associated Factor: View from Tropical Forest of Nepal

Vol.22 No.5

Forest Canopy Density is a dynamic process mediated by various natural and anthropogenic factors. It can be changed over time and locations in the same forest type and landscape. However, human dimensions are considered as the primary force of landscape change and subsequent forest canopy loss in tropical regions of the world. Many studies have been indicated that roads have a far greater impact on forests than simply allowing access for human use. Similarly, rivers have been used as means of transportation, hence illegal logging and felling further deplete forest canopy density. The main objective of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamic alterations of Forest Canopy Density (FCD) across with site associated factors such as biophysical, physical and human interferences in tropical region of Nepal from 1988 to 2001. Landsat TM and ETM+ of 1988 and 2001 were used to assess the spatial and temporal dynamic alterations of FCD. This analysis revealed that distance to human settlements at P=<0.01, rivers, human interferences (path and fire) and species composition had a statistically significance at P=<0.05 level. However, other factors did not show any significant relation. So, we concluded that understanding of dynamic alterations of FCD with respect to factors was quite complex phenomena. Other surrounding environment could also play a significant role. A comprehensive analysis could be required to understand such complexities. Therefore, additional factors such as climatic, biophysical, social, and institutional with respect to spatio-temporal variability should be considered for the better understanding of canopy dynamic.

Households' Characteristics, Forest Resources Dependency and Forest Availability in Central Terai of Nepal

Panta, Menaka,Kim, Kyehyun,Lee, Cholyoung Korean Society of Forest Science Vol.98 No.5

For centuries, forests have been a key component of rural livelihood. They are important both socially and economically in Nepal. Firewood and fodder are the basic forest products that are extracted daily or weekly basis in most of the rural areas in Nepal. In this study, a field survey of 100 households was conducted to examine the degree of forest dependency and forest resource availability, households' livelihood strategy and their relationship with forest dependency in Chitwan, Nepal. A household' response indexes were constructed, Gini coefficient, Head Count Poverty Index (HCI) and Poverty Gap Index (PGI) were calculated and one way ANOVA test was also performed for data analysis. Data revealed that 82/81% of all households were constantly used forest for firewood and fodder collection respectively while 42% of households were used forest or forest fringe for grazing. The Forest Product Availability Indexes (FPAI) showed a sharp decline of forest resources from 0.781 to 0.308 for a 20-yr time horizon while timber wood was noticeably lowered than the other products. Yet, about 33% of households were below the poverty threshold line with 0.0945 PGI. Income distribution among the household showed a lower Gini coefficient 0.25 than 0.37 of landholdings size. However, mean income was significantly varies with F-statistics=246.348 at P=0.05 between income groups (rich, medium and poor). The extraction of firewood, fodder and other forest products were significantly different between the income group with F-statistics=16.480, 19.930, 29.956 at P=0.05 respectively. Similarly, landholdings size and education were also significantly different between the income groups with F-statistics=4.333, 5.981 at P=0.05 respectively. These findings suggested that income status of households was the major indicator of forest dependency while poor and medium groups were highly dependent on the forests for firewood, fodder and other products. Forest dependency still remains high and the availability of forest products that can be extracted from the remaining forestlands is decreasing. The high dependency of households on forest coupled with other socioeconomic attributes like education, poverty, small landholders and so on were possibly caused the forest degradation in Chitwan. Therefore, policy must be directed towards the poor livelihood supporting agenda that may enhance the financial conditions of rural households while it could reduce the degree of forest dependency inspired with other income generating activities in due course.
