Abstract : Soil washing for rice paddy soils contaminated with cadmium

Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) has adopted the maximum permissible concentration of cadmium (Cd) in polished rice and other relevant crops, which requires an alleviation of the Cd contamination in rice grain. Various chemicals were tested for their Cd extraction efficiency by using three paddy soils, selecting ferric chloride (FeCl3) as a promising chemical for on-site soil washing. The comparison of FeCl3 extraction ability to that of various iron, manganese, and zinc salts revealed the primary extraction mechanism of FeCl3 to be proton release coupled with hydroxide generation (hydrolysis). This indicates that proton release from FeCl3 is controlled by the chemical equilibrium of hydroxide formation, and minimizes the negative effect on soil properties and environment, which are different from hydrochloric acid (HCl). Washing with FeCl3 led to the formation of Cd?chloride complexes, enhancing Cd extraction from the soils. We also developed in situ three-step washing method for Cd-contaminated paddy fields with FeCl3. The method was comprised of 1) chemically washing the field soil with a FeCl3 solution; 2) washing the treated soil with water to eliminate residual Cd and FeCl3; and 3) on-site treatment of wastewater using a portable wastewater treatment system. Concentrations of Cd in the treated water were below Japan`s environmental quality standard (0.01 mg L-1). The on-site soil washing confirmed the effectiveness of FeCl3 for decreasing Cd in soil and rice grains without negative effect on rice yield.
Detection of Driver Gene Mutations from Thoracic CT Images Based on LightGBM with Radiomics Features

Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and has become a general medical problem. To lessen the risk of death, early detection and treatment is particularly required. The patients can use molecularly targeted drugs when the driver gene mutations of the cancer are detected, but invasive biopsies are required. So, development of new methods to detect it noninvasively and in a short time are expected. we propose a new machine learning method for identifying the presence or absence of driver gene mutations of lung cancer on Thoracic CT Images that is a non-invasive, in a short time, and low-cost CAD (Computer Aided Diagnosis) system. In the proposed method, radiomics features are given as explanatory variables in addition to Thoracic CT Images, and supervised learning using LightGBM is performed to conduct binary classification with/without driver gene mutations.

Purpose: Patients with hematological malignancies are at an increased risk of severe infection with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, developing an adequate immune response after vaccination is difficult, especially in patients with lymphoid neoplasms. Since the long-term effects of the BNT162b2 vaccine are unclear, the humoral immune response 5 months after the two vaccinations in patients with hematological disorders was analyzed. Materials and Methods: Samples were collected from 96 patients vaccinated twice with BNT162b2 and treated with at least one line of an antitumor or immunosuppressive drug in our hospital from November 2021 to February 2022. Serum anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (anti-SARS-CoV-2) spike (S) antibody titers were analyzed. Patients were age- and sex-matched using propensity matching and compared with a healthy control group. Patients with serum anti-SARS-CoV-2 S antibodies were defined as ‘responder’ if >50 U/mL. The patients had B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL), multiple myeloma, chronic myeloid leukemia, etc. Results: Patients had significantly low antibody levels (median, 55.3 U/mL vs. 809.8 U/mL; p<0.001) and a significantly low response rate (p<0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that patients with B-NHL, aged >72 years, were associated with a low response to vaccination. There were no significant differences between patients with chronic myeloid leukemia and healthy controls. Conclusion: Our study shows that patients with hematological disorders are at risk of developing severe COVID-19 infections because of low responsiveness to vaccination. Moreover, the rate of antibody positivity differed between the disease groups. Further studies are warranted to determine an appropriate preventive method for these patients, especially those with B-NHL.
