Quantum chemical calculations employing two-conguration self-cosistent eld theory and density functional theory have beencarried out for a new diradical cation composed of two ring systems, 1,4-thiazine and 1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl. These ring systems arecoupled through a central CAN bond, and hence, the free rotation are allowed for this diradical cation. However, the singlettripletenergy splitting has been predicted to be positive for every dihedral angle between two ring systems. Moreover, the cation diradicalwas found to be isoelectronic with trimethylenemethane in the planar conformation. This fact is deeply related with the robustnessof high-spin correlation of the diradical cation..

The O-glycosidase, endo-α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase from Enterococcus faecalis (endoEF) catalyzes the cleavage of core 1 and core 3 type O-linked disaccharides between GalNAc and serine or threonine residues from glycoproteins. The endoEF has broad substrate specificity and thus is extensively utilized for the structural and functional analysis of the O-linked glycans. In this study, we expressed and purified the recombinant endoEF (rEndoEF) by using the silkworm-baculovirus expression vector system (Silkworm-BEVS) and confirmed the deglycosylation activity of rEndoEF targeting reporter glycoproteins, which was equivalent to the commercial Oglycosidase. Thus, our study provides important clues to produce highly active rEndoEF O-glycosidases employing silkworm-BEVS as an alternative.

<P>Most wrasse species swim during the day and bury themselves in the sandy bottoms of shallow reefs at night. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of sandy bottoms to the day-active/ night-inactive rhythmicity of the tropical wrasse Halichoeres trimaculatus. Actogram analysis revealed that fish were active during the photophase and inactive during the scotophase in aquariums with both sandy and bare bottoms. When fish were kept in aquariums with bare bottoms, rhythmicity was maintained under constant dark conditions (DD) but became obscured under constant light conditions (LL), suggesting that a day-active/night-inactive rhythmicity is regulated by the circadian system. Robust fluctuations in Period1 (wPer1) and Period2 (wPer2) expression were observed in the pectoral fin tissue under light-dark conditions (LD). Similar fluctuations in wPer1 expression persisted under DD. When fish were kept under LD conditions for 7 days and then DD for 20 days, the emergence of fish from the sandy bottom was delayed gradually. At the same time, the peak time of wPer1 expression under DD was retarded from 06: 00 to 10:00. Although wPer2 expression was dampened under DD, it increased after exposing fish to light. These results suggest that wPer1 and wPer2 are differentially involved in the day-active/ night-inactive rhythmicity, and that blocking light with a sandy bed at night and exposing fish to light during emergence in the morning play important roles in maintaining consistent activities in wrasse species.</P>

Self-Tuning Control of a Two-Link Flexible Manipulator using Neural Networks

In this paper, a self-tuning control of a two-link flexible manipulator using neural networks is presented. The neural networks learn the gains of PI controllers for the flexible manipulator. Numerical results show that this presented neural network control system can suppress the vibration of the flexible manipulator and track the desired joint angles.Simulation results show that the self-tuning control system using neural network can be used effectively for the position control of the two-link flexible manipulator.

We have proposed the Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System(THEUS) for applying to commercial buildings. THEUS consists of fuel cells, water electrolyzers, metal hydride tanks and their auxiliaries. We evaluated the energy saving of the basic THEUS in view of an actual operation using thermal demand data of actual buildings. The THEUS have ability for achieving energy saving, in comparison with an ice storage system for cooling demand. We have developed the hydrogen storage system using metal hydride and unitized reversible cell (URC) combine the functionality of a fuel cell and an electrolyzer in a single device, these are important components of THEUS. The metal hydride tank designed and manufactured to evaluate that we assumed actual operation in the experiments. We developed the numerical simulation code, and simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. The simulation about two tanks system was done by using this code. The heat utilization can be improved greatly. To achieve URC commercial use, improvement of durability was examined. It confirmed that our URC had durability for several thousand hours.

A Totalized Hydrogen Energy Utilization System (THEUS) is proposed for load leveling and stabilizing the grid. The THEUS is a novel unitized regenerative fuel cell system that achieves high overall efficiency through optimized heat utilization. In this paper, a metal hydride tank (MHT) is chosen as hydrogen storage. In the MHT, the heating and cooling from adsorption/desorption processes is used to produced heated and chilled water for building ventilation systems. A new horizontal type MHT was developed to enhance the recovery rate of the reaction heat. This tank has a double coil heat exchanger and contained 50kg of AB5 metal hydride. The experimental results were compared with the results which were developed previously at AIST. The new tank results showed an improvement for the heat recovery rate which is the ratio of recovered energy to the entire reaction heat of the metal hydride. The reaction heat recovery was improved due to the decrease of the thermal capacity of the tank.

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor (PDE5i) on urinary continence recovery after bilateral nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy (BNSRP). Materials and Methods: Between 2002 and 2012, 137 of 154 consecutive patients who underwent BNSRP in our institution retrospectively divided into 3 groups that included patients taking PDE5i immediately after surgery (immediate PDE5i group, n=41), patients starting PDE5i at an outpatient clinic after discharge (PDE5i group, n=56), and patients taking no medication (non-PDE5i group, n=40). Using self-administered questionnaires, the proportion of patients who did not require incontinence pads (pad-free patients) was calculated preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months after BNSRP. Severity of incontinence was determined based on the pad numbers and then compared among the 3 groups. Results: Proportions of pad-free patients and severity of incontinence initially deteriorated in all of the groups to the lowest values soon after undergoing BNSRP, with gradual improvement noted thereafter. The deterioration was most prominent in the immediate PDE5i group. As compared to the non-PDE5i group, both the PDE5i and immediate PDE5i groups exhibited a better final continence status. Conclusions: PDE5i improves final continence status. However, administration of PDE5i immediately after surgery causes a distinct temporary deterioration in urinary incontinence.

This is the fifth report on the research project which compared the older version of the TOEIC?? test with the new one. Through an examination of the ability measures based on the Rasch analysis, it is confirmed that there is a relatively high degree of parallelism between the two versions of the TOEIC?? in terms of examinees’ placement. A close examination of the exceptional measures revealed that 6.6% of the total 136 test takersmight have been misplaced due to personal factors such as lack of test time and lack of interest in answering questions. However, it is still too early to conclude that the observed differences are due to either test format or personal factors, or both.
