The astounding development of information technology is realizing the knowledge-based society through the medium of the Internet. Now the source of power leading the society is moving from resources and capital to information and knowledge, and abilities to produce, manage and utilize knowledge are becoming essential for life in the knowledge-based society. Moreover, with the geometric expansion of knowledge production, it is growing more important to create knowledge through collaboration with others beyond an individual dimension. As learning environment to meet such social needs, the concept of online learning community is drawing people's attention. That is, learners form communities under common objectives and create knowledge through interaction with other community members.
So far, however, researches on online learning communities have been limited to general macroscopic studies such as conceptual examination of the process of community development. Thus this study examined relationships among learner characteristics, interactions among learners, and learning outcomes based on the type of learning tasks in online learning communities. The results of this study may provide practical guidelines for designing and operating strategies for enhancing the effect of learning in online learning communities.
The present study purposed to examine the relationships among learner characteristics, interactions and learning outcome based on learning task types in online learning community. Research questions to be answered in this study are as follows.
    1. How are learner characteristics, interactions and learning outcome related with one another in 'memory-level simple task'?
    2. How are learner characteristics, interactions and learning outcome related with one another in 'understanding-level simple task'?
    3. How are learner characteristics, interactions and learning outcome related with one another in 'understanding-level complicated task'?
For this purpose, this study selected 24 first- and second-year middle school male and female students who were participating in online community operated by N Company. The tools that were used in conducting the experiment are online learning community environments, three learning task types by cognitive level and difficulty, prior knowledge test, multiple intelligence test(verbal-linguistic, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence), interaction analysis tools(social network analysis), and achievement evaluation tools. Task activities were carried out for three weeks from the 3rd week of May to the 1st week of June 2003. Data were analyzed in three ways, which were multiple correlation analysis using Kendall's tau coefficient, relational graph analysis using path coefficients and path analysis based on a path model.
The results presented above can be summarized as follows:
Prior knowledge and verbal-linguistic intelligence among learner characteristics were variables that were found to relate to learning outcome in all the three types of learning task. And also high centrality of interactions was variable appeared to affect learning outcome. In 'understanding-level simple task' among the three types of task, the effect of interactions on learning outcome was higher than the direct effect of learner characteristics on learning outcome. This suggests the high effect of interactions.
Variables of learner characteristics related to interaction were different based on learning task types. The learner characteristics that affected interactions commonly in the three types of learning task was prior knowledge, which appeared to affect all interactions of high in-degree and out-degree centrality in each type of learning task.
Specifically, intrapersonal intelligence and verbal-linguistic intelligence were found to be learner characteristics affecting interactions of high in-degree centrality in 'memory-level simple task'. Prior knowledge and interpersonal intelligence were found to be learner characteristics affecting interactions of high in-degree centrality in 'understanding-level simple task'. And prior knowledge, intrapersonal intelligence, and interpersonal intelligence were found to be learner characteristics affecting interactions of high in-degree centrality in 'understanding-level complicated task'
Variables of learner characteristics affecting interactions of high out-degree centrality were prior knowledge and interpersonal intelligence in 'memory-level simple task'. Prior knowledge and verbal-linguistic intelligence were found to be learner characteristics affecting interactions of high out-degree centrality in 'understanding-level simple task'. At last, prior knowledge and interpersonal intelligence were found to be learner characteristics affecting interactions of high out-degree centrality in 'understanding-level complicated task'.
