This study aims to analyze the effects of mathematics education in digital storytelling classrooms for sixth graders in elementary school. To this end, classes were divided into three categories: a digital storytelling classroom (DSC), a normal storytelling classroom (NSC), and a normal classroom (NC). Differences in mathematical disposition, attitudes, and achievement were identified among the students in these three classes. In particular, this study investigated comprehension and attitudinal changes among students in the DSC and sought to determine the effects of digital storytelling in mathematics education. To this end, the following research questions were established.

    1. What differences exist between the DSC, NSC, and NC in terms of the mathematical disposition, attitudes, and achievement they produce?

    2. What differences exist between the DSC, NSC, and NC in terms of mathematical disposition, attitudes, and achievement according to academic achievement level?
    1) What differences do students with excellent academic achievement in mathematics show in terms of their mathematical disposition and attitudes?
    2) What differences do students with poor achievement in mathematics show in terms of their mathematical disposition and attitudes?

    3. How do students in the DSC perform in terms of their comprehension of mathematics classes and attitudes?
    1) What differences do students in the DSC show in terms of their comprehension of mathematics classes?
    2) What changes do students in the DSC show in terms of their attitudes during class?
    3) What changes do students in the DSC show in terms of mathematical affect?

To answer research questions 1 and 2, randomized experiments were conducted. Randomly selected students took tests in the first semester to allow assessment of mathematics achievement, disposition, and attitudes (preliminary tests). Three classes were selected as homogenous groups: a DSC (the experimental group), an NSC (the first comparison group), and an NC (the second comparison group). After classes ended, differences in the academic achievement of students in these three groups were analyzed in terms of mathematical disposition, attitudes, and achievement, as well as differences in mathematical disposition and attitudes according to achievement level.
In addition, to answer research question 3, case studies were conducted in the DSC, the experimental group. A class environment for digital storytelling was created (providing tools for digital teaching and storytelling, creating a homepage for interactive participation by students, and setting up a wireless Internet network in the classroom), and students’ comprehension of classes and affect as well as their attitudes during class were analyzed through filmed classes, face-to-face interviews, and class reviews.
The results of this study lead to the following conclusions. First, students in the DSC showed better mathematical dispositions and attitudes compared to those in the NSC and NC. One reason is that, although students nowadays belong to the digital generation and actively use digital devices, it is difficult to find classroom activities or themes where smart-phones are required. This study found that the use of digital devices was one factor that contributed to improving students’ mathematical dispositions and attitudes; considering that more than 70% of elementary school students in upper grades possess smart-phones, this finding indicates that measures to use smart-phones in the classroom must be considered.
Second, the DSC, NSC, and NC resulted in differences in students’ mathematical flexibility, one of the sub-categories of mathematical disposition. There was a gap between the storytelling classes—DSC and NSC—and the NC, implying that the teaching technique of storytelling helped students to develop mathematical flexibility through seeking various solutions or creating stories. These findings indicate that students’ mathematical flexibility can be improved by offering them opportunities to create various stories with mathematical content instead of simply focusing on solving mathematical problems in class.
Third, the three groups showed statistically significant differences in academic interest in mathematics, one of the sub-categories of attitude. For the DSC and NSC, statistically significant differences arose from the usage of digital devices. These results suggest that teachers can better enhance 6th graders’ interest in mathematics in NSCs compared to NCs, but an NSC cannot produce as wide a range of results or stimulate as much interest among students as a DSC can. Therefore, in light of the current trends of the information age, measures to promote students’ interest in classes through the use of digital devices should be considered.
Fourth, in terms of the comprehension of content in the DSC, it was confirmed that students understood mathematical content at each stage of the class as well as structured and created stories through conversations with other students. In particular, during the stage at which students searched for solutions, they explored and understood mathematical content through various methods such as surfing the Internet on smart-phones, using digital-teaching tools, engaging in group activities, and doing operational activities. In addition, while structuring stories, students created stories with mathematical content that they had learned through spontaneous communication. In addition, students created various kinds of content, such as recordings, songs, scripts, comics, photos, writings, and UCC with stories, and the mathematical content included in the stories was confirmed.
Fifth, changes in students’ mathematical dispositions and attitudes were confirmed through class reviews that they submitted after class. Although mathematical dispositions and attitudes are not things that can change within a short span of time, this study showed that regular and steady DSC classes have the potential to reduce the number of students who find mathematics boring or hate it.
Sixth, the results of a mathematics test on the lesson units taught for this research showed that students with low preliminary test scores had a statistically significant difference depending on whether they participated in the DSC or the NSC. In particular, the DSC was more effective than the NSC for learning how to calculate the surface areas and volumes of cylinders. Thus, an effective strategy for teachers is to emphasize mathematical principles and help students conduct calculations accurately, in addition to asking students to practice often.
Seventh, this research proved that using digital devices during mathematics classes is feasible in ordinary classrooms. In particular, as the DSC in this research was designed for students to use their smart-phones for class activities, the DSC can be applicable for students in grades where digital devices can be used. Using smart-phones for class activities can be useful for boosting interest in mathematics among fifth and sixth graders when learning through storytelling textbooks released in 2013.
