다문화적 수학수업 개발 연구 = (A) development research of multicultural math instruction

The Korean society has gradually changed to a multicultural society since the 1990s, while going though demographic changes, and there have been lots of efforts made to find solutions to difficulties occurring due to this trend in terms of education. According to the result of previous researches, it is reported that multicultural students are rather inferior to other students in academic achievement. In this context, it is required to discuss the necessity of multicultural math education.
The researcher set up the purpose of this study to propose principles and methods of developing a multicultural math instruction by applying and analyzing actual cases. Under such a purpose, researcher observed math classes and then survey math teachers' multicultural competency in Korea. These field based a research was conducted on the development of a multicultural math instruction.
To find out the characteristics of math class which was Research Problem 1, class observations were carried out in seven elementary schools and three middle schools where multicultural students are taught at present. The observation was conducted one time for each class with audio or video recordings, and the researcher actually participated in each class and prepared a field note. After transcribing audio or video recordings, class analyses were carried out according to Criteria for Multicultural Education developed by CREDE(Tharp et al., 2000).
As a result of analyzing those findings, it was found that the middle school math class was conducted mainly by focusing on question-solving in a conventional lecture style, which was not appropriate for the criteria of multicultural math class. Besides, the elementary school math class apparently seemed to be relatively properly carried out for the criteria of multicultural education, but as a result of the researcher's participant observation, it was found that some aspects were not reflected in the math class, such as cultural elements of math, provision of equal chances in the math class and social reformation likely to be achieved in the math class. Considering those findings, it seemed that the criteria for multicultural education proposed by CREDE didn't reflect the characteristics of math subject well enough in places, and it was confirmed that those elements should be reflected on the development of multicultural math learning principles.
And then, a survey was conducted on math teachers' multicultural competency, which was Research Problem 2. Beforehand, the researcher developed 'Standard of Math Teachers' Multicultural Competency' (Guskey & Passaro, 1994; Guyton & Wesche, 2005; Gyeong-hwan Moh, 2007), and the survey was carried out by targeting 309 teachers and their colleagues teaching multicultural students to find out descriptive statistics. As a result, they showed a very low efficiency close to 2 points on average in math subject-related categories except Category A regarding belief in and knowledge about math learners from various different backgrounds. In addition, they showed significant differences between groups according to ages, whether they had experience as a multicultural teacher and whether they had direct experience with multicultural people.
To solve Research Problem 2 on the basis of the survey results of on-site actual conditions, the researcher developed a multicultural math instruction. Beforehand, the theories and previous researches on multicultural math education were examined. By categorizing each theorist's or researcher's assertions by proper rank and synthesizing all the components supposed to belong to each category, some principles were proposed for the development of a multicultural math instruction.
The principles can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, the culture principle of multicultural math education implies that a knowledge system called math should not only contain objective and absolute values, but be recognized as a product of various historical aspects, based on which math education should be carried out.
Secondly, the equality principle of multicultural math education has multidimensional concepts. The first dimensional concept means the equality of individualized education considering students' backgrounds. The second dimensional concept means the equality of chances of educational participation. Finally, the third dimensional concept means the equality of math learning chances in high levels.
Thirdly, the social reformation principle of multicultural math education is a concept that materials, resources and circumstances, etc. given by math education should be composed of things likely to provide a chance to reconsider contradictions and irregularities existing in our society from a critical point of view.
According to the multicultural math learning principles drawn from the research, a multicultural mathe instruction was developed, and to verify the model developed, multicultural math learning cases were developed with five attempts and applied. As for the study subjects, a first-grade math class in middle school, where multicultural students study, was selected for class observation. Afterwards, an analysis was carried out from aspects of culture, equality and social reformation.
The results can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, as a result of analyzing all the findings from the aspect of culture, it was meaningful in the aspect of motivating students to establish concepts in a more familiar and meaningful way. Furthermore, by reflecting a mathematical product of various ethnic groups, which is an important and fundamental principle of multicultural math education, students were given a chance to realize that various ethnic groups reestablished the identity of the modern math rightly, and even the Eastern math contributed to forming and developing the present algebra.
Secondly, as a result of synthesizing all the findings from the aspect of equality, it was found that there occurred positive changes in mathematical conversations (questions and explanations) that showed students' cognitive changes when multicultural math education was conducted by reflecting the theory of equality and various backgrounds of students. Moreover, multicultural math teaching-learning was found to make students take part in explanation in math class more than lecture-styled class, and considering its level, effects to lead a higher participation rate could be found as well. On the basis of such results, it was observed that when multicultural math learning was applied to math class, the way teachers had all the initiative and right to speak in class was dismantled and recomposed, and at the same time, students were given more rights to participate and speak. Finally, it was found that increasing students' participation rate made it possible for them to have a higher level of mathematical thinking, further providing an opportunity of learning for students to express their mathematical thinking.
Thirdly, as a result of analyzing all the findings from the aspect of social reformation, students showed very positive responses toward social-criticism materials. It was also found that students' contacting lots of inequalities and irregularities existing in the world through articles and mathematical problem circumstances could diversify their views on the world and provide them with a chance to develop their capabilities as a democratic society citizen.
On the basis of those research results, this study could come to conclusion as below.
Firstly, multicultural math education hasn't been properly conduced in Korea so far, and it is required to consider various backgrounds of learners as a scaffold for effective math learning, to have all the learners fairly participate in class and to carry out multicultural math class through various mathematical conversations so that students may develop their mathematical thinking into a higher level.
Secondly, it was found that math teachers in Korea have a relatively high level of multicultural competency in knowledge about and belief in multi-cultures, but unfortunately their multicultural competency was found be so low that they cannot practice it for math subject. Accordingly, it is important to discuss the necessity of multicultural math teachers' education programs on the basis of on-site experience, and it is also significant to discuss the necessity of developing a multicultural math instruction to practice in educational sites.
Thirdly, this study has proposed the principles of multicultural math class, through the on-site actual condition survey and theoretical consideration, as aspects of culture, equality and social reformation. Moreover, as a result of applying actual cases of the class model on the basis of such principles, this study was able to discover positive changes in terms of cognition or definition in all the aspects of culture, equality and social reformation.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리나라는 1990년대 이후 인구학적인 변화를 겪으며 점차 다문화 사회로 이행하고 있으며 이로 인해 발생하는 어려움들을 교육적 차원에서 그 해답을 찾고자 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 따라서 2009년 개정된 교육과정 총론에서는 '문화적 소양과 다원적 가치에 대한 이해', '세계와 소통하는 시민으로서 배려와 나눔의 정신'을 우리 교육이 추구 해야 하는 인간상으로 제시하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 교육과학기술부에서는 다문화가정 학생의 문화적 배경을 고려한 맞춤형 교육 방안(2009)을 제안하였으며, 전국의 시, 도 교육청에서는 다문화교육 자료집을 제작, 보급하면서 다문화가정 연구학교를 지정하여 시범 운영하도록 권장하고 있다.
그러나 이와 같은 정책적 노력에도 불구하고 다문화학생들은 학업성취, 학교적응, 교우관계 등에서 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 것으로 조사되고 있다(김미숙, 2005; 송혜은 2008; 장윤영, 고상숙, 2009). 다문화학생들이 겪는 이와 같은 어려움들은 수학교과에서도 나타나고 있는데, TIMSS-2007 결과에 따르면 우리나라의 4, 8학년 학생들 중 학교와 집에서 서로 다른 언어를 사용하는 학생들은 그렇지 않은 학생들과 비교하여 수학 학업성취도가 떨어지는 것으로 보고하고 있다(Mullis et al., 2008). 뿐만 아니라 신동희(2010)의 조사연구에 의하면 새 터 민 학생, 다문화가정 학생, 그리고 저소득층 학생들은 일반학생들에 비해 수학, 과학 교과에서 기초학력이 떨어지는 것으로 나타났다.
특별히 진로 및 직업의 선택에 있어서 수학교과가 필터와 같은 역할을 한다는 사회기능적 측면을 고려할 때, 다문화학생들이 수학교과에서 낮은 성취도를 나타내는 것은 불평등적 사회 계층구조를 지속적으로 재생산할 수 있다는 점에서 다문화적 수학교육의 필요성이 제기됨을 확인할 수 있다(Fennema, 1980; Sells, 1980).
뿐만 아니라 일반적으로 수학적 지식체계는 문화나 가치로부터 자유로운 순수 이성적 지식체계임을 강조하여왔다. 그러나 수학의 역사를 고찰해 볼 때, 수학적 지식체계는 다양한 민족, 인종, 계층 등의 집단으로부터 의미 있게 발달한 수학적 산물의 총체인 것을 알 수 있으며 이러한 지식체계가 학교 교육과정으로 구성될 때, 각 시대마다 권력을 주도하고 있는 주류집단의 문화와 가치 등이 반영되어 발달해 왔다. 게다가 수학적 지식은 고정불변의 체계가 아니라 다양한 수학적 아이디어를 비판적 시각으로 바라보고 새로운 방법을 제안하며 여러 집단과의 의미교섭을 통해 지속적인 변화와 발전을 거듭해 왔다. 이와 같은 수학적 지식체계의 내적 특징들은 수학이 문화성의 요소를 내포하고 있음을 나타내는 것이라고 할 수 있다(Ascher, 1991; Bishop, 1991; D'Ambrosio, 1997; Ernest, 1988).
뿐만 아니라 수학을 가르치고 배우는 교실상황은 규범, 가치, 문화 등과 매우 밀접하게 연관되어 있는 사회 ․ 문화적 공간임을 주지해야 할 것이다. 따라서 수학교실에서 교수-학습이 이루어질 때, 교사가 모든 학생이 수학에서 성공적으로 학습할 수 있다는 긍정적인 신념을 가지고 있는지, 모든 학생에게 공평한 학습의 기회 혹은 참여의 기회를 제공하는지, 모든 학생이 자신의 수학적 아이디어를 자유롭게 나타내며 교사 혹은 동료 학생들과 의사소통을 통한 의미교섭을 할 수 있는 학습의 장을 제공하고 있는지, 다양한 배경의 학생들이 가지고 오는 비형식적인 수학적 지식을 이해하고 인정하며 효과적인 학습을 위한 비계로 활용하는지, 다양한 집단이 공존하는 세계시민으로 성장하도록 비판적 사고를 통한 사회 개혁의 역량을 고취시키는지 등의 요소가 엄밀히 분석되어야 할 것이다(Banks, 2008; Bennett, 2007; Nieto & Bode, 2008).
지금까지 살펴본 바와 같이 수학교과의 사회기능적인 외적 요인, 수학적 지식체계가 갖는 내적 요인, 수학교실에서 이루어지는 교수-학습 상황의 사회․문화적 요인 등으로부터 다문화적 수학교육의 필요성이 요구된다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 다문화적 수학교육을 실천하기 위한 다각도의 노력이 뒤따라야 할 것이다.
이와 같은 다문화적 수학교육의 필요성과 중요성에 따라, 본 연구에서는 다문화적 수학교육을 실천하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 다문화적 수학수업의 개발을 위한 연구를 진행하였는데 이를 위한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
1. 우리나라 다문화적 수학교육의 실태는 어떠한가?
1) 초 ․ 중등 다문화 수학교실 관찰결과는 어떠한 특징을 나타내는가?
2) 수학교사의 다문화적 역량 조사결과는 어떠한가?
2. 다문화적 수학수업의 이론적 기반은 어떻게 구성될 수 있는가?
1) 다문화적 수학수업의 목표와 기본구조는 어떠해야 하는가?
2) 다문화적 수학수업을 위한 교수-학습 내용과 방법의 조직원리 및 그에 따르는 설계방안은 어떠해야 하는가?
3. 연구문제2를 반영하여 구체화한 다문화적 수학수업의 실례를 적용한 결과는 어떠한가?
1) 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사의 수학적 대화수준은 어떻게 변화하는가?
2) 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사의 수업참여형태는 어떻게 변화하는가?
위에서 제안한 연구문제를 해결하기 위해 첫째, 다문화 수학교실 관찰과 수학교사의 다문화적 역량 척도 검사를 통한 실태조사연구를 실시하였고 둘째, 그 결과를 기반으로 이론적 고찰을 통해 다문화적 수학수업의 목표, 기본구조, 다문화적 수학수업을 위한 교수-학습 내용과 방법의 조직원리 및 설계방안을 제안하였으며 셋째, 이론적으로 구축한 다문화적 수학수업의 타당성, 효과 성, 실천가능성 등을 확인하기 위하여 5차 시 분의 수업을 적용, 분석하였다. 각 연구문제에 따른 연구 방법 및 결과는 다음과 같다.
연구문제1-1에서 제시한 우리나라 다문화 수학교실의 특징을 확인하기 위해 서울, 경기 소재 10개의 다문화 수학교실을 대상으로 수업 관찰을 실시하였다. 연구자는 수업관찰을 위한 관찰자로 참여하여 각 학급별 1차 시 수업을 오디오녹음 또는 비디오녹화를 하였고, 현장일지를 작성하였다. 관찰된 10개의 다문화 수학교실의 수학수업은 미국의 다양성과 수월성교육 연구센터인 CREDE(The Center for Research on Education, Diversity, Excellence)에서 개발한 다문화교육을 위한 규준에 따라 분석하였다(Tharp et al., 2000).
그 결과 초등학교의 경우 삶을 이용한 맥락화나 협동학습, 수학적 대화 등은 비교적 많이 관찰되지만 중학교의 경우에는 수학적 대화에서 3회, 긍정적 기대 1회만 관찰 되었다. 이러한 결과들을 분석해 보았을 때, 중학교 수학수업은 다문화적 수학수업의 규준에 적합하지 않게 전통적 강의 식, 문제풀이 위주의 수업으로 진행되고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 초등학교 수학수업의 경우 가시적으로는 다문화적 수업 규준에 비교적 적절하게 진행되고 있는 것처럼 보여지나, 연구자의 참여관찰을 통한 분석 결과 수학의 문화성 요소, 수학교실 안에서의 균등한 기회, 모든 학생에 대한 교사의 공정하고 긍정적인 기대감, 수학수업에서 이루어질 수 있는 사회 개혁성 요소 등이 반영되지 않고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 CREDE에서 제시한 다문화교육을 위한 규준은 수학교과의 특성을 잘 반영하지 못한 부족한 부분이 있다고 분석되며 다문화적 수학수업의 이론적 기반을 구축할 때, 이와 같은 요소들이 반영될 수 있도록 해야 한다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.
연구문제1-2에서 제시한 수학교사의 다문화적 역량은 어떠한지 알아보기 위해 '수학교사의 다문화적 역량' 척도를 이용하여 조사연구를 실시하였다. 그 결과 범주A인 일반적인 다문화교육에 대한 역량에서는 긍정응답자가 약 54.36%를 차지할 정도로 비교적 높게 확인되었다. 그러나 수학학습자, 수학의 문화성, 다문화적 수학 교수-학습 등 수학 교과와 관련된 범주 B, C, D의 경우 평균이‘거의 그렇지 않다'에 가깝고 긍정응답자도 10% 미만으로 매우 낮게 나타났다. 이러한 결과들로 비추어볼 때 수학교사들은 수학 교과에서 다문화적 교육을 실천하기에는 매우 낮은 역량을 가지고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다.
뿐만 아니라 수학교사의 다문화적 역량이 수학교사의 연령, 다문화적 교사교육 경험, 다문화 사람들과의 직접적인 경험 등에 따라 집단 별 유의한 차이가 있는지 알아보기 위하여 일원분산분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 연령이나 다문화적 교사교육 경험에 따른 차이는 1∼2개 문항에서 유의한 차이가 발견될 정도로 미미한 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 다문화 사람들과의 직접경험 유무에 따른 차이는 범주 A, B, D의 10개 문항에서 유의한 차이를 보이는 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한 결과는 다문화적 교사교육이 각 교과의 특성을 반영하여 전문화, 세분화 되어야 하고, 다문화학생들과의 접촉, 다문화 교실상황에서의 수업시연 등 직접적인 경험이 요구된다는 것을 시사한다고 할 수 있다.
연구문제1의 결과를 종합하면 현재 우리나라 다문화 수학교실에서 다문화적 수업이 거의 이루어지고 있지 않으며, 교사들의 다문화적 역량도 매우 낮은 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 다문화 사람들과의 직접적인 경험이 수학교사의 다문화적 역량에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 파악되었다. 이러한 실태조사 결과를 통해 다문화적 수학교육에 대한 연구는 이론적 차원 뿐 만 아니라 수업개발, 다양한 학습 자료의 개발, 교사교육 프로그램 개발 등 수학교실 현장에 적용 가능한 실천적 연구가 이루어져야 함을 제기한다고 할 수 있다.
연구문제2-1에서 제시한 다문화적 수학수업의 목표와 기본구조는 우리나라의 다문화적 수학교육의 실태조사를 기반으로 현행 교육과정 제도 안에서 실천 가능하며 우리나라의 실정에 적합한 수준으로 제안하였다. 먼저 다문화적 수학수업의 목표는 첫째, 수학적 의사소통 능력 및 다문화적 역량 발달을 통한 수학적 힘의 강화 둘째, 수학교육에서의 평등 성 원리 실천을 통한 수학적 힘의 강화 셋째, 비판적 사고능력 및 세계시민의 자질 발달을 통한 수학적 힘의 강화로 제안하였다.
다음으로 이와 같은 다문화적 수학수업의 목표를 구현하기 위한 수업의 구조는 다문화적 수업조직 원리에 따라 조직된 교수 내용이 제시되면 문화적 접촉을 경험하고 학생과 교사, 학생과 동료학생, 학생과 학부모, 공동체, 전문가 등 교육주체들과의 의사소통이 이루어진다. 이러한 과정을 통해 학생이 가지고 있던 기존 지식과의 의미교섭이 발생하며 이를 통해 지식이 확장되는 구조로 설명된다.
연구문제 2-2에서 제시한 다문화적 수학수업을 위한 교수-학습 내용과 방법의 조직원리는 문화성, 평등 성, 개혁성으로 제안하였다. 문화성 원리는 수학적 지식체계가 객관적, 절대적인 가치만을 담고 있는 것이 아니라 다양한 역사적 산물임을 인식 해야 하고 그것을 바탕으로 수학교육을 해야 한다는 것이다. 평등 성 원리는 학생들의 다양한 인종, 민족, 언어, 종교, 학습스타일, 경험, 의사소통 방식 등의 다양한 배경을 고려하며 공평한 학습기회 제공을 통해 모든 학생이 자신이 가지고 있는 최대 잠재력까지 발휘할 수 있도록 교육 해야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 사회개혁성원리는 수학교육에서 제공되는 재료, 자원, 상황 등이 우리사회에 존재하는 모순, 부조리 등에 비판적인 시각으로 재고할 기회를 제공하도록 교육해야 한다는 것이다. 본 연구에서는 이와 같은 다문화적 수학수업을 위한 교수-학습 내용과 방법의 조직원리와 그에 따르는 구체적인 방안에 따라 실제 5 차 시 분의 수업을 적용하였는데 그 결과는 다음 연구문제 3에서 제시하였다.
연구문제3-1에서 제시한 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사의 수학적 대화수준은 각 차 시가 진행됨에 따라 점차 발달하는 패턴을 보이는 것으로 분석되었다. 특히 3 차 시 몽고문화를 반영한 수업에서 몽고국적의 다문화학생T의 수학적 대화수준이 높아지는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 A학생, T학생과 같이 수학교실의 부분적 참여자가 완전한 참여자로 변화하는 것이 관찰되었으며 학생들의 활동 지나 형성평가 문항 등을 분석한 결과 긍정적인 결과를 보였다. 뿐만 아니라 학생들의 수업에 대한 흥미가 높은 것을 알 수 있었으며 기존에 학생들이 가지고 있던 문화적 편견 등을 확인하고 사회비판적 시각을 발달시킬 수 있는 기회가 제공되었다.
또한 각 차 시가 진행되면서 교사의 다문화적 역량, 수학적 대화 수준 등도 함께 발달한다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 즉, 다문화적 수학수업은 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사 모두에게 수학적 힘을 갖도록 학습의 장을 제공하고 이러한 수업을 통해 점차 다문화적 역량이 발달한다는 점을 알 수 있었다.
연구문제 3-2는 다문화적 수학수업 이후 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사의 수업참여 형태를 분석하였다. 그 결과 차 시 가 점차 진행됨에 따라 다문화학생을 포함한 모든 학생이 점차 수학적 대화를 통해 수업에 적극적으로 참여하는 형태로 변화하는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 교사의 일방적인 수업참여 형태가 해체되고 학생들의 참여를 독려하는 방향으로 변화하는 것을 발견할 수 있었으며 교사가 묻고 스스로 답하는 PQ형태의 질문이 점차 줄어드는 것을 발견할 수 있었다.
이와 같은 다문화학생, 일반학생, 교사의 수학적 대화수준의 발달과 수업참여형태의 긍정적인 변화 등의 결과를 종합적으로 고찰해 볼 때, 문화적 수학수업의 실천 가능성, 효과 성, 타당성 등을 확인할 수 있었다.
지금까지 살펴본 연구문제 1, 2, 3의 결과들을 바탕으로 다음과 같은 논의를 할 수 있다. 첫째, 현재 우리나라 다문화적 수학교육은 잘 이루어지고 있지 않으며 특히 중학교에서는 전통적인 강 의식 문제풀이 위주의 수업으로 진행되고 있었다. 이러한 현장의 실태는 수학교사들이 다문화적 수학수업에 대한 이해가 부족하고 교수-학습 자료가 거의 없는 실정을 반영한 결과라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 교과 과목에서 실천할 수 있는 교사 연수프로그램 개발, 다양한 다문화적 교수-학습 자료의 개발 및 보급 등을 통해 다문화적 수학수업의 실천을 위해 노력 해야 할 것이다.
둘째, 현재 우리나라 수학교사들의 다문화적 역량은 일반적인 다문화에 대한 지식 및 신념은 비교적 높게 나타났으나 수학 교과에서 실천하기에는 매우 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 현장 경험을 바탕으로 하는 다문화적 수학교사교육 프로그램의 필요성이 제기되며 현장에서의 실천을 위한 다문화적 수학수업 개발의 필요성이 제기된다.
셋째, 현장 실태조사 및 이론적 고찰을 통한 다문화적 수학수업의 목표, 구조, 수업조직 원리 등을 제안하였고 그에 따르는 구체적인 수업을 적용한 결과 각 차 시의 학습목표에 성공적으로 도달 할 수 있었고, 수학적 힘의 강화, 교육적 평등의 실천 등에서 효과 성, 실천 가능성 등을 확인할 수 있었다.
본 논문의 연구문제를 해결하는 과정에서 다음과 같은 시사점을 얻었다. 첫째, 현재 다문화학생이 빠르게 증가하여 많은 수학교실에서 다양성이 증가하고 있는 현실이다. 이러한 상황에서 다문화학생이 있는 수학교실을 관찰하고 면밀히 분석하였다는 점에서 시사점을 찾을 수 있다. 둘째, 다문화적 교육을 실천하는 데에 교사의 역할은 매우 중요하고 핵심적이다. 특히, 수학교과의 특성을 반영하여 수학교사에게 적합한 다문화적 역량 척도를 개발하였고 그것을 이용하여 실태조사를 하여 우리나라 수학교사들의 다문화적 역량을 확인하고 몇 가지 특징을 밝혀내었다는 점에서 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 셋째, 다문화적 수학수업은 다원화된 사회에서 살아갈 학생들에게 문화 간의 접촉을 통해 타자를 이해하고 포용하는 능력을 기르며, 수학교육의 평등 성 원리를 실천하고, 미래의 세계시민사회에서 능력 있는 일원이 될 수 있도록 교육하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이러한 교육 목적에 따라 연구자는 현장 실태조사와 이론적 고찰을 통해 실천 가능한 다문화적 수학수업의 목표 및 구조, 수업조직 방법을 제안하였다. 또한 실제 적용을 통해 그 효과 성, 타당성, 실천가능성 등을 탐색했다는 점에서 그 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.
앞서 요약된 연구결과와 논의를 바탕으로 다음과 같은 제언을 하고자 한다.
첫째, 점차 다양한 문화적 배경의 학생들이 공존하는 수학교실이 증가할 것인데 이를 위한 다양하고 실천적인 방안 마련이 필요하다는 점이다. 특별히 다문화적 교육은 전문가 집단, 학부모, 공동체 등의 노력이 복합적으로 필요하다. 따라서 이들 각 집단 간의 긴밀한 협조 체제가 필요하다는 점이다.
둘째, 교과과목에서 실천 가능한 다문화 교사교육 프로그램이 필요하다는 점이다. 특별히 이러한 교사교육 프로그램은 이론적 교육에만 그치는 것이 아니라 다양한 학생들을 만나는 경험, 그들에게 수학을 다문화적으로 가르치는 경험이 반드시 포함 되어야 할 것이다.
셋째, 다문화적 수학수업 모형을 기반으로 하는 다양한 수학 프로그램의 개발이 필요하고 그러한 교육의 실천가능성, 효과 성 등에 대한 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.
