This study was to present the way of improving lesson efficiency by analyzing lessons of special schools for children with mental retardation. Seven classes from three special schools for children with mental retardation participated, and 14 lessons(two lessons per classroom) were observed and analyzed. And analysis was performed by three factors: teacher, learner, and context. Teacher factor consisted of group size, teaching methodology, type of media, coping skill to misbehavior, and individualized instruction; learner factor, class participation and misbehavior; context factor, support from paraprofessionals in the classroom. As qualitative research using nonparticipant observation, this study also collected and analyzed quantitative data for increasing feasibility of the results. Data were gathered through animated images for the lesson, transcription, teacher interview, and lesson analysis framework, analyzed via three steps, namely, documentation, classification, and encoding, and interpreted by subjective interpretation, inter-subjective interpretation, and reviewing. The results were as follows;
First, in the teacher factor, while most lessons were provided as the form of individualized instruction and large group lessons, participation rate was the highest in the small group lessons. Hence it might be necessary to increase the rate of small group lesson in the special schools for children with mental retardation. In addition, for enhancing participation rate in the large and small group lesson, it was required for learners to have tasks which they could independently or to be supported by paraprofessionals.
In the teaching methodology, lecture was still the most common practice but showed the lowest participation rate. Rather, the participation rate of both lecture with media and song-and-dance were higher than that of lecture alone. When lecturing, teachers demonstrated the tendency to question and answer by themselves.
Among media, teachers utilized the visual media most. However, to increase participation rate, the visual and auditory media or manipulable devices were efficacious.
In many cases, teachers coped with unconcern to learner's misbehavior. It was difficult for teachers to treat every single misbehavior from the learners during lesson, which meant the need of support to address learners' misbehavior. Typically learners' misbehavior made teachers waste the time about 10 minutes out of 40-minute lesson. Moreover, for reducing misbehavior, it was desirable for learners to be grouped by their level as much as possible.
When implementing individualized instruction, teachers should provide different way of teaching by the degree of disability to improve overall participation rate. In other words, whereas learners with mild mental retardation might receive lesson via lecture and self-directed method, learners with moderate and severe mental retardation might need more individualized lesson. Furthermore, there should be little individual differences in the grouping.
Second, in the learner factor, learners' misbehavior was mainly off-task while seated. It was important to set a plan for enhancing participation rate of both hyper- and hypo-activity learners. In addition, to reduce learners' misbehavior, teachers put the educational instruments within their reach, and had to do lessons while kept their eye on learners. Meanwhile, it was necessary for teachers to understand misbehavior from the learners with severe mental retardation as natural phenomenon occurring in the process of cognitive and affective development. If their behavior was what their counterpart without disability did, that was not misbehavior even though they did during lesson.
The result showed that overall class participation was quite low(57.87%). To increase participation rate in the area of learner factor, shifting class was required. Teachers had to offer inclusive education for the behavior being fostered via interaction, and differential education for the behavior being cultivated via independent learning. There should be difference in the type of lesson between learners with mild mental retardation and those with moderate and severe mental retardation. Teachers had to provide large group instruction to the former who could understand teacher's lecture and do self-directed learning, and individualized instruction to the latter who had difficulty in understanding teacher's lecture.
To offer individualized education to learners with moderate and severe mental retardation, it is critical to convert one-classroom, one-teacher, and one-lesson system into one-classroom, multi-teacher, and multi-lesson system. To accomplish this conversion, it was necessary to reconstruct the class in the special schools.
Finally, in the context factor, human resources who could teach and those who assisted learners were needed to enhance class participation rate. Both participation rate and individualization rate were higher when there were paraprofessionals than when there weren't, but misbehavior occurred more as well. Further study was required to explore the relationship between paraprofessionals' role and misbehavior outbreak.
