    This study aims to analyse various aspects of ownership conflicts among two-year-olds in a child educare center through qualitative research methods. The main themes of analysis can be summarized as follows:
    A. What are the objects of ownership conflicts in the class of two-year-olds?
    B. How do children behave when they try to assert their ownership of particular objects?
    C. How do teachers behave to mediate ownership conflicts among children and what are the effects of these mediation behaviors?
    Data for this study were collected through qualitative fieldwork in a class of two-year-olds, A University Child Educare Center, Suwon, Korea, from April 2008 to September 2008. Eighteen two-year-old children and three head teachers in this class were intensively observed and interviewed. Research methods employed in data collection include participant observation (52 times), in-depth interview with teachers (5 times), video recording and library research. Contents of participant observations and in-depth interviews were recorded [verbatim?] on the spot by handwriting and video recorder. Afterwards, collected materials were encoded and classified into appropriate categories for analysis.
    Important findings of this study are as follows:
    First, main objects of ownership conflicts among the two-year-olds are concerned with favorite plaything, play, paly area, and person. Ownership conflicts often arise from competitions among children with regard to particular playthings in various play areas. In case of favorite plays, ownership conflicts arise when two or more children compete for a same role, or when there are differences in children's opinions about the topic of a particular play. These role competitions and opinion differences develop into conflicts when there are misunderstandings among concerned children arising from their incomplete communication skills. Besides, ownership conflicts arise when children try to defend or expand their play area, and when they do not want to share particular friends or teachers with other children.
    Second, to assert their ownership, two-year-olds employ various strategies such as physical attack, making excuse, bullying, request, ignoring, crying, running away. Children are observed to physically attack their opponents or destroy other children's playthings when their attempts to obtain ownership are not successful. Making excuse occurs when children try to persuade their opponents with their own logic, whereas bullying occurs when they insist loudly their own opinions only without paying any attention to others. Request and ignoring are also frequently observed in ownership conflicts. Request occurs when a child asks a favor of other child, and ignoring occurs when a child evades a claim of other child. Ignoring results mainly from a child's insufficient ability to confront others, and in this respect, can be regarded as a behavior reflecting personal characteristics of a child. Running away is similar to ignoring, but it contains a movement from one place to another. It occurs when a child feels threatened or disadvantaged by the claims of his/her opponents. Occasionally, children try to assert their ownership by crying openly, but this behavior occurs less frequently than expected.
    Third, teachers employ various mediation strategies such as providing alternatives, questioning and explaining, stern admonishment, persuasion, instructions, emotional support, distracting attention, to resolve ownership conflicts among children. The most frequently-used mediation behavior of teachers is providing alternatives which can satisfy both parties in an ownership conflict. In this behavior, a teacher tries to make each child understand the other's position by persuasion, questioning and explaining, using a fair standard. When there is not sufficient time for teachers to mediate an ownership conflict step by step, they usually use instructions technique to effectively regulate children's behaviors. Stern admonishment, which is the least favored technique from the viewpoint of teachers, is reluctantly used when there are possibilities of children being injured by physical attack or violent behavior. In these risky circumstances, teachers use stern admonishment to forcefully prevent conflict from escalating into violent confrontation. On the other hand, teachers provide emotional support to unhappy children by hugging or physically touching them, thereby soothing children's disappointment from ownership conflicts. Moreover, teachers distract children's attention from the object of ownership conflict to other objects if it is very difficult to use mediation techniques such as explaining or persuasion. This happens when a child is very self-centered and, as a result, does not listen to others.

    본 연구는 바울어린이집 만 2세반 영아간에 일어나는 소유권 갈등의 양상을 밝히고, 영아간의 갈등 상황에서 나타나는 교사의 중재 행동을 탐색하여 영아들에게 바람직한 또래관계 경험을 제공하기 위한 기초를 마련하는데 연구의 목적이 있다.
    이러한 연구목적에 따른 구체적인 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
    1. 만 2세반 영아의 소유권 갈등의 대상은 무엇인가?
    2. 만 2세반 영아의 소유권 주장행동은 어떻게 나타나는가?
    3. 만 2세반 영아의 소유권 갈등 시 교사의 중재행동은 어떻게 나타나는가?
    본 연구의 대상은 수원에 있는 A대학교 어린이집 만 2세 영아반으로, 이 학급의 영아 18명과 담임교사 3명이 연구에 참여하였다. 연구기간은 2008년 4월부터 2008년 9월까지였으며, 자료 수집은 총 52회의 참여관찰, 5회의 교사면담, 비디오 촬영, 문서수집 등을 통해 이루어졌다. 참여관찰과 면담내용은 현장 기록으로 작성하여 자료화하였으며 수집된 자료는 범주화하여 분석하였다.
    본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다.
    첫째, 만 2세 토끼반 영아들이 소유권 갈등을 일으키는 대상은 놀이감, 하고 싶은 놀이, 공간, 내가 좋아하는 사람이었다. 영아는 각 놀이영역에 제공된 놀이감이나 소품으로 인해 소유권 갈등이 일어났다. 하고 싶은 놀이에서는 놀이하고자 하는 주제와 역할이 다르고 영아간의 다른 생각으로 의사소통이 되지 않아 오해가 생기면서 소유권 갈등이 일어났다. 영아들은 자기 놀이 공간을 지키거나 놀이 공간을 만들기 위해서 갈등이 일어났고, 자신이 좋아하는 친구와 선생님을 독차지하기 위해서도 소유권 갈등이 일어났다.
    둘째, 만 2세반 영아의 소유권 주장행동은 신체적으로 공격하기, 이유대기, 윽박지르기, 요청하기, 무시하기, 울기, 도망가기로 나타났다. 영아는 신체적으로 상대 영아를 해하거나 구성물을 무너뜨리면서 자기주장을 하는 것을 볼 수 있었는데 신체적으로 공격하는 행동은 차지하고 싶은 마음이 좌절되거나 상대방의 반응이 부정적일 때 나타나는 행동이었다. 이유대기는 자신의 소유권을 주장하기 위해 자기만의 이유로 상대 영아를 설득시키려는 시도에서 나타나는 행동이고, 윽박지르기는 자신의 생각만을 무조건 우겨대면서 소리 지르며 주장하는 행동이었다. 다음으로 많이 관찰된 주장행동으로는 요청하기와 무시하기였다. 요청하기는 다른 영아에게 자신의 요구를 부탁하면서 나타났고, 무시하기는 상대 영아의 주장에 대한 대응 능력의 부족 등으로 회피하는 행동인데 주로 영아 개인적인 특성으로 인해 나타나는 행동이었다. 소유권 상황에서 벗어나는 도망가기 행동은 무시하기와 유사했으나 다른 장소로 이동한다는 차이가 있고 상대 영아의 주장에 위협을 느끼거나 자기주장을 펼치는 것이 불리하다고 생각할 때 나타났다. 영아들은 자신의 속상한 마음을 알리고 자기의 입장을 강력하게 전하기 위해 우는 행동으로 소유권을 주장을 하기도 하였는데 우는 행동은 생각만큼 자주 관찰되지는 않았다.
    셋째, 영아의 소유권 갈등 시 나타나는 교사의 중재 행동은 대안 찾아주기, 질문하고 설명하기, 엄하게 타이르기, 권유하고 설득하기, 지시하기, 관심 돌리기, 정서적으로 지원하기 행동으로 나타났다. 영아 간에 소유권 갈등이 발생되었을 때 교사는 소유권 갈등 해결을 위해 단순히 영아의 행동을 지적하며 지시하는 중재부터 단호하게 훈계하면서 엄하게 타이르는 중재 행동까지 다양한 중재 방법을 사용하고 있었다. 가장 많이 나타나는 교사의 중재 행동은 소유권 갈등 상황에서 두 영아에게 모두 만족할만한 대안을 찾아 해결해 주는 것으로 나타났다. 자신의 입장만을 주장하는 두 영아의 입장에서 각각 만족할만한 해결책을 마련하기 위해 교사는 영아를 권유하고 설득하려고 애쓰는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 교사는 소유권 갈등 상황에서 영아들에게 공정한 기준에 따라 상대의 입장을 납득시키려는 방법으로 질문하고 설명하면서 서로의 입장을 중재하고 있었다. 교사가 시간적인 여유가 없을 때는 서로의 입장을 정리하기 위해 지시하기 방법을 많이 사용하고 있었고 교사가 가장 바람직하지 않다고 생각하면서도 어쩔 수 없이 중재하는 방법은 엄하게 타이르기였다. 교사는 영아의 신체적 공격이나 과격한 주장행동으로 인해 상대 영아가 위험하다고 판단되면 그 행동을 강압적으로 저지하기 위해 엄하게 타이르는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 교사는 영아간 소유권 갈등시 영아의 강한 자기중심성 때문에 영아의 입장을 설명하거나 설득하는 중재만으로 소유권 갈등이 해결되지 않고 말이 통하지 않을 때 영아의 발달적 특성을 고려하여 관심을 다른 곳으로 돌리는 중재 방법을 사용하는 것으로 나타났고, 소유권 갈등 시 속상해하는 영아의 마음을 달래주고 정서적으로 지원해주기 위해 안아주는 등의 신체적 접촉을 통한 중재 방법을 사용하여 정서적으로 지원해주는 것으로 나타났다.

    셋째, 영아의 소유권 갈등 시 나타나는 교사의 중재 행동은 대안 찾아주기, 질문하고 설명하기, 엄하게 타이르기, 권유하고 설득하기, 지시하기, 관심 돌리기, 정서적으로 지원하기 행동으로 나타났다. 영아 간에 소유권 갈등이 발생되었을 때 교사는 소유권 갈등 해결을 위해 단순히 영아의 행동을 지적하며 지시하는 중재부터 단호하게 훈계하면서 엄하게 타이르는 중재 행동까지 다양한 중재 방법을 사용하고 있었다. 가장 많이 나타나는 교사의 중재 행동은 소유권 갈등 상황에서 두 영아에게 모두 만족할만한 대안을 찾아 해결해 주는 것으로 나타났다. 자신의 입장만을 주장하는 두 영아의 입장에서 각각 만족할만한 해결책을 마련하기 위해 교사는 영아를 권유하고 설득하려고 애쓰는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 교사는 소유권 갈등 상황에서 영아들에게 공정한 기준에 따라 상대의 입장을 납득시키려는 방법으로 질문하고 설명하면서 서로의 입장을 중재하고 있었다. 교사가 시간적인 여유가 없을 때는 서로의 입장을 정리하기 위해 지시하기 방법을 많이 사용하고 있었고 교사가 가장 바람직하지 않다고 생각하면서도 어쩔 수 없이 중재하는 방법은 엄하게 타이르기였다. 교사는 영아의 신체적 공격이나 과격한 주장행동으로 인해 상대 영아가 위험하다고 판단되면 그 행동을 강압적으로 저지하기 위해 엄하게 타이르는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 또한 교사는 영아간 소유권 갈등시 영아의 강한 자기중심성 때문에 영아의 입장을 설명하거나 설득하는 중재만으로 소유권 갈등이 해결되지 않고 말이 통하지 않을 때 영아의 발달적 특성을 고려하여 관심을 다른 곳으로 돌리는 중재 방법을 사용하는 것으로 나타났고, 소유권 갈등 시 속상해하는 영아의 마음을 달래주고 정서적으로 지원해주기 위해 안아주는 등의 신체적 접촉을 통한 중재 방법을 사용하여 정서적으로 지원해주는 것으로 나타났다.
