    The purpose of the research is to examine how a teacher's demonstration children's chance for self-explanation affects children at age of 2 and 3 to acquire a concept of balance, and how the influence varies by the age. The research identified the following research questions.
    Ⅰ.How does a teacher's demonstration and children's chance for self-explanation affect children's acquisition of concept of balance?
    1. How does it affect the number of success in carrying out balance tasks?
    2.How does it affect the children to verbally express concept of balance?
    3. How does it affect the children to express concept of balance with gestures?
    4.How does it affect the children's representational level of concept of balance?
    Ⅱ. How does children's age affect the acquisition of concept of balance?
    1. How does it affect the number of success in carrying out balance tasks?
    2.How does it affect the children to verbally express concept of balance?
    3.How does it affect the children to express concept of balance with gestures?

    60 two-year-old children and 60 three-year-old children who attend one of the seven children's house located in Gyeonggi-do Province participated in the research. The subjects were grouped into a control group, an experimental group 1 that included a teacher's demonstration of the balance tasks and an experimental group 2 that gave children a chance for self-explanation. The method used in Pine, Lufkin and Messer (2004) was revised to analyze the number of success, verbal expression, gesture expression and representational level of concept of balance.
    The research processed in order of a preliminary research, pre-test, test and post-test. Through a preliminary research, the adequacy of material, tasks and tools was examined and modified if necessary. A pre-test and post-test were conducted in the same manner before and after the main test respectively. For a pre- and post-test, six urethane blocks (3 symmetrical, 3 asymmetrical) were used for balance tasks, and the task was conducted individually. After conducting the test, children were asked to give self-explanation on whether they succeeded or not. The whole process was recorded.
    The test was conducted three times. For each test, two unit blocks (1 symmetrical, 1 asymmetrical) were provided. The test method differed among the groups: in the group 1, a supervisor immediately showed a demonstration when a child failed to conduct the balance task. In the group 2, children were given a chance for self-explanation on whether they succeeded or not after conducting the task.
    To identify the impact of variables on a number of success, ANOVA was used for each group, and t-test for different age groups. To examine the impact on verbal and gesture expression of concept of balance, ANOVA and x2 were used for different groups, and t-test and x2 for different age groups. In regard to the effect on representational level of concept of balance, ANOVA was conducted for different groups, and t-test and x2 for different age groups.
    The research suggested the following outcomes. Firstly, in terms of acquiring concept of balance, the group II that gave children a chance for self-explanation showed better performance than the group I that had a teacher demonstrate the balance tasks. Regarding expression of balance concept in language and gesture related to center and distance, the group II that gave children a chance for self-explanation showed better performance than the control group or the group I where a teacher demonstrated the balance tasks. In terms of language and gesture related to distance, the group I produced the most expressions, but for verbal and gesture expressions unrelated to balance concept, the control group was the most active. Concerning representational level of balance concept, the group II that gave children a chance for self-explanation showed highest improvement followed by the group I and the control group.
    Secondly, the research examined the different outcome between pre-test and post-test according to age and analyzed its effect on learning concept of balance. In terms of a number of success, children of age 3 showed more improvement than those of age 2. In regard to verbally expressed concept of balance, three year old children showed more improvement in expressions related to concept of center and weight. For gesture expression of concept of balance, three-year-old children acquired more expressions related to weight than two year olds. However, regarding gesture expression related to concept of center, two-year-old children showed better improvement than three-year-olds. In terms of representational level of concept of balance, three year olds showed better improvement than two year olds.

    본 연구의 목적은 만 2, 3세 영유아가 균형개념을 습득하는데 있어서 교수방법 중 교사의 시범과 영유아의 자기설명 기회에 따라 어떠한 영향을 미치는지, 그리고 영유아의 연령에 따라 어떠한 차이를 나타내는지 밝히고자 하는 것이다. 이와 같은 목적을 위해 다음과 같은 연구문제를 설정하였다.

    본 연구의 대상은 경기도에 위치한 7곳의 어린이집에 다니고 있는 만 2세 60명과 만 3세 60명으로 총 120명이다. 각각의 어린이집마다 연구대상을 통제집단, 교사가 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ, 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ로 나누고 균형개념 습득 정도를 알아보았다. 연구에 사용된 도구로는 Pine, Lufkin과 Messer(2004)의 연구에서 사용된 범주를 번안?수정하여 성공 횟수, 언어 표현, 제스츄어 표현, 균형개념 표현수준에 대해 분석하였다.
    연구절차는 예비연구, 사전검사, 본 실험, 사후검사 순으로 진행되었다. 예비연구를 통해 자료 및 과제, 도구의 적절성을 검토하고 수정하였고, 본 실험 전후에 사전?사후검사를 동일한 방법으로 실시하였다. 사전?사후검사는 3개의 대칭 유형과 비대칭 유형, 총 6개의 우레탄 블록을 균형과제로 제시하고 연구자와 일대일로 진행되었다. 과제수행 후 영유아는 성공여부에 대해 자기설명을 하였고 전 과정은 비디오에 녹화되었다.
    본 실험 처치는 3회에 걸쳐 개별적으로 진행되었는데 각 회당 대칭 유형 1개와 비대칭 유형 1개, 총 2개의 유니트 블록이 제시되었다. 본 실험에서는 집단별로 처치과정을 달리하였는데 실험집단 Ⅰ은 영유아가 균형과제 수행 후 실패했을 경우 실험자가 즉각적으로 시범을 보여주었으며, 실험집단 Ⅱ는 균형과제 수행 후 성공 여부에 대해 영유아가 자기설명을 할 수 있도록 기회를 부여하였다.

    본 연구 결과를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 집단에 따라 균형개념 습득에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 성공 횟수에서는 통제집단이나 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ보다 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ가 더 향상된 결과를 나타냈다. 또한 언어와 제스츄어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 중심과 거리에 관련된 언어와 제스츄어의 표현은 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ가 통제집단이나 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ보다 많이 나타났다. 거리에 관련된 언어와 제스츄어 표현에서는 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ에서 가장 많이 나타났으나 균형개념과 관련 없는 언어와 제스츄어는 통제집단에서 가장 많이 나타났다. 균형개념 표현수준에서는 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ에서 가장 향상된 결과를 나타냈고 다음으로는 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ, 통제집단의 순으로 나타났다.
    둘째, 연령에 따라 사전검사와 사후검사의 증감분을 가지고 균형개념 습득에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 성공 횟수에서는 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 향상된 결과를 나타냈다. 또한 언어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 중심, 무게와 관련된 표현에서 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 증가하였으며 제스츄어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 무게와 관련된 표현에서 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 증가하였다. 반면 중심과 관련된 제스츄어 표현에서는 만 2세가 만 3세보다 더 많은 증가를 나타냈다. 균형개념 표현수준에서는 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 향상된 것으로 나타났다.

    본 연구 결과를 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 집단에 따라 균형개념 습득에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 성공 횟수에서는 통제집단이나 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ보다 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ가 더 향상된 결과를 나타냈다. 또한 언어와 제스츄어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 중심과 거리에 관련된 언어와 제스츄어의 표현은 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ가 통제집단이나 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ보다 많이 나타났다. 거리에 관련된 언어와 제스츄어 표현에서는 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ에서 가장 많이 나타났으나 균형개념과 관련 없는 언어와 제스츄어는 통제집단에서 가장 많이 나타났다. 균형개념 표현수준에서는 영유아에게 자기설명의 기회를 부여한 실험집단 Ⅱ에서 가장 향상된 결과를 나타냈고 다음으로는 균형과제의 시범을 보여준 실험집단 Ⅰ, 통제집단의 순으로 나타났다.
    둘째, 연령에 따라 사전검사와 사후검사의 증감분을 가지고 균형개념 습득에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 성공 횟수에서는 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 향상된 결과를 나타냈다. 또한 언어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 중심, 무게와 관련된 표현에서 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 증가하였으며 제스츄어로 표현된 균형개념에서는 무게와 관련된 표현에서 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 증가하였다. 반면 중심과 관련된 제스츄어 표현에서는 만 2세가 만 3세보다 더 많은 증가를 나타냈다. 균형개념 표현수준에서는 만 3세가 만 2세보다 더 많이 향상된 것으로 나타났다.
