This research employs the ground theory approach among various qualitative methodologies in order to reach a deep understanding of both the experiential process that children undergo in block play and the essential meaning of it. The questions the author attempts to answer throughout her participant observation are: First, what are the reasons why children prefer block play? Second, how are the characteristics and social interactions in the development of block play? Third, what are the conflicts and resolving strategies involved during the process of block play? Four, how is the gender difference expressed in block play?
The objects of this study are 22 children(female 7, male 15) in a 5-year-old class of K kindergarten at Guro district, Seoul. Participant observations were conducted in altogether 48 sessions, with 4-5 times per week between entrance time and optional activity time, from 19th, May 2003 to 10th, October 2003. Also, in order to collect information through varied ways, in-depth interviews were made with children, teachers and parents, the collected data of which were conceptualized through the process of coding. Furthermore, thick description, triangulation, peer debriefing, persistent observation, reflective journal, and member checking, etc. are applied to ensure the trustworthiness of the research.
The result of this research shows that first, children take pleasure in block play because of the joy and sense of accomplishment in creating, the joy in demolishing, and the happiness of embracing the world through construction. The joy in creating and the pleasure in demolishing are the two sides of a coin, and the latter is no less significant than the former being the motive of block play. However, the pleasure in demolishing has failed to be noticed by teachers, hence the opportunities for children to obtain pleasure in demolishing have been restricted.
Second, the characteristics of children's block play are popular subject of the play, decision of the subject, impromptu transformation and elaboration of construction, and flow of the play according to friend/non-friend relationship. Once a play leader makes new and interesting construction, it immediately becomes prevalent subject among many children, who thereafter follow the fashion in their own making of constructions. Those popular constructions that become fashion usually are play material for both the use of major muscles and simple function play. They are made of plastic blocks, hence do not easily collapse but can be moved and carried without difficulty.
When making constructions children plan beforehand by themselves, through discussion, or after other children. They name it during or after the process, and play simulation or drama using the constructions, changing or elaborating the constructions by impromptu scenario. Particularly, there are distinctions in the flow of block play according to friend/non-friend relationship. The constructions made by friends together have positive, active interactions with a flow of acception, while in the case of non-friends the interactions are few with a flow of many conflicts and troubles.
Third, the implicit rules shared by children have more significant influences upon the block play than the agreed rules at the beginning of semester. The implicit rules are related with the authority of the child that make other children join the play, who is the beginning block builder or play leader. Consequently, the authorities in deciding the participation of the play, in possessing the blocks and space, in dominating the process of constructing, in playing roles in simulation play, etc. belong to the beginning block builder or play leader.
These implicit rules become standards in the resolution of conflicts among children and are shared as rules guiding the social order. However, such implicit rules are subjected to the physical power of children, as the child who possesses physical strength can overstep all these implicit rules by performing his power.
Fourth, conflicts occurring along with social interactions in block play, i.e. participation of the play, possession of blocks and space, hindrance in building, demolition of constructions, roles in the drama play using constructions, and conflicts taking place in arrangement, are solved through different strategies according to friend/non-friend relationship. Conflict between friends with a controversial flow is often worked out through peaceful strategies such as concession, compromise, suggestion, etc., while in conflict between non-friends with a fighting flow, those strategies engaged are physical power such as bodily attack or threat, dependence on the power or authority of friends, or flattery or compromise, etc. After the conflict is settled, children who are friends play together, while they share no friendship, go to different places or play independently.
Fifth, according to the dynamic of age group, the pattern of group in block play changes from solitary play to group play, then from group play to solitary play. This mostly happens when the play leader or a strong child joins the play later on and excises leadership in the building process while ignoring the opinion of the beginning block builder. In this case it is found that children and are influenced by physical strength rather than ability of block constructing. Moreover, children who interact in group play sharing friendship in making separate constructions use interactive strategies such as imitation, competition, combination, give-and-take, etc. alternatively to elaborate the constructions and enjoy the interaction.
Sixth, there are distinctions between boys and girls in terms of preference, number and time in participation, subject and structure of constructions, etc. in block play. Boys like better block play than girls, they and show superiority over girls in block-constructing ability. The subjects and structures of their constructions are diverse, complicated, elaborate, and the number and time in participation are longer. Due to gender difference, the main reasons why girls do not like block play are annoyance from boys, the nature of constructions that easily collapse, difficulty in choosing the subject, as well as the fact that they cannot take the constructions back home to boast.
