The purpose of this study was to delve into feedback(task-involved and ego-involved) presentation via private web community in the sector of design education as a way to boost the satisfaction level and design problem-solving skills of learners. This study was conducted over the past three years. After a pilot study was carried out to find out the views of learners and educators about design education and the limits to that education in order to determine the right directions for this study, the focus of the study was placed on testing the effects of feedback presentation type via private web community. It's specifically meant to examine the effect of two different sorts of feedback in a move to provide an opportunity for learners to infer the possible output of their design and come up with workable solutions. The students who participated in the study were evaluated by a design professor in December 2006 in terms of design problem-solving skills, and another two professors were asked to team up with the professor to ensure the impartiality of the evaluation. Finally, an in-depth interview was held to have a profound discussion with the learners and design educators to make the right suggestions.
The findings of the study were as follows:
As for learner satisfaction, the learners expressed the same satisfaction with the primary and secondary experiments that respectively provided task-involved feedback and ego-involved feedback by means of private web communities.
The feedback via private web communities served to boost the interest of learners and their zeal for task performance. The feedback that were promptly offered in various forms through private web communities contributed to raising their satisfaction level. And that served to fortify their mutual bond and stir up their discussion and exchange of opinions at the same time.
In conclusion, the group of students who were given feedback through private web communities was more gratified than the other group that was offered face-to-face feedback, according to the primary and secondary experiments. A supply of information on learning, progress of lessons and given tasks through e-mail, note or visitor list on private web communities provided a chance for the learners to have enough communication, which wasn't quite possible in face-to-face teaching. Some of the students were inactive, and those who came back to school after taking one or more semester(s) off or were transferred from other schools didn't yet get used to the given learning environments. This approach allowed those students to be given more academic information, and eventually contributed to boosting their class participation. Further-more, they got more interested and found it more satisfactory to take lessons when multimedia feedback was provided via private web communities by capitalizing on task-related images or video shots. This sort of feedback made it possible to make an immediate judgment of learner reaction, and that was able to offer differentiated feedback in a manner appropriate at each learner's level and at their conveniences, since there were a lot of individualized tasks in design education sector.
The design education via private web communities served to facilitate the interaction of the learners and consequently produced the best results. That created all the conditions for active feedback by applying a wide variety of materials that could motivate learners and address their cognitive needs. Specifically, all the members got more community-minded in the course of sharing learning information, and there remained a strong bond among them even after the learning process.
In terms of design problem-solving skills, the primary and secondary experiments delivered different results. In the primary experiment, there was little gap in creative ideas and design synthesis between the experimental group to which task-involved feedback was given via private web communities and the control group given face-to-face feedback. In other words, the improved satisfaction level of the learners who were given task-involved feedback via private web communities didn't necessarily lead to their progress in design problem-solving skills. To remedy the situation, ego-involved feedback was provided in the secondary experiment to encourage the learners to take a deeper approach toward design by using more clear and systematic language and to wake up to their problems by comparing themselves with one another, instead of merely trying to ignite their interest. They were taught to bolster their appreciation skills by taking a literary approach, namely by having them make a logical description of the results of a preliminary investigation and their ideas on the personal web communities. As a result, there was a lot of improvement in their satisfaction level and problem-solving skills after the secondary experiment was carried out by offering ego-involved feedback via the private web communities.
Their improvement was indebted to a series of task-related feedback given by the instructor about the classification, delivery and exchange of information and their sincere answers to their questions. The ego- involved feedback enabled the learners to describe their ideas more clearly, to find and correct anything wrong with their design through reflective thinking, and eventually to design again. At the same time, the learners were encouraged to provide one another with ego-involved feedback. They got to approve of one another as design creators and appreciators who could share opinions during the ego-involved feedback process.
The feedback via private web communities made a greater contribution to raising the satisfaction level of the learners than the face-to-face feedback. According to the primary and secondary experiments, however, higher learner satisfaction didn't necessarily guarantee improved problem-solving skills. As a consequence, not only task-involved feedback, which creates rapport among learners, but ego- involved feedback, which makes it possible to take a deeper approach to design by using more clear and systematic language, are both required to boost the satisfaction and problem-solving skills of learners in design education via private web community.
Overall, the benefits of private web community in the field of design education could be listed as below:
First, a private web community enables students to make up a portfolio by applying arts propel. They could keep everything they have learned in that as proof of their learning. Since design curriculum characterized by the continuity of work should provide a big picture of design work, a private web community is one of the adequate media to construct a portfolio by applying arts propel. After making a work on the computer or manually, learners are able to post it onto their web communities without having to photograph their work with a digital camera or cell-phone camera and print it. At that time, the private web community could function as a medium for them to make progress, come up with ideas, foster their own visual and reflective thinking, appreciate their works with one another and have a mutual communication.
Second, one of the characteristics of a private web community was that it was a sort of edutainment. There were different kinds of entertaining components in items provided by private web communities as one of marketing strategies. The intriguing items that had entertaining features preferred by today's learners served to spark the interest of learners, to improve their relationship with the instructor and to create rapport among all the learners.
Third, a private web community makes it possible to provide ego-involved feedback in consideration of the personal environments of learners, and that feedback could function as significant information that could expedite problem solving. There were more private spaces in the private web communities than public ones, which made it easier to grasp the mood, state, experiences and personal environments of the learners.
Finally, the use of private web community enabled the learners to arrange and sort out design information and to design in an easier way. The application of private web community to design education was easy to do for everybody irrespective of time and space, and that is one of efficient instructional media.
Currently, learners make an evaluation of lectures in the evaluation sector(the final stage of learning) of the existing design curriculum, but the findings of the study showed that a positive evaluation of lectures by learners couldn't guarantee the quality of the instruction. Students should be taught to utilize different media and learn in a new and interesting way. At the same time, they should be given ample chances to be exposed to what previous media haven't provided in order to grow into a design creator and appreciator who is able to take advantage of one's own rich experiences with audiovisual media. Given the needs of today's society, providing design education via private web community had a positive impact on the students, and that was a good attempt to ensure sequential learning and make up for the specificity of design class.
In the future, design will exert an enormous influence as one of primary economic and cultural elements on the boundless global markets. Under the circumstances, educators should direct their energy into nurturing competitive designers who can properly respond to rapid changes, and sustained research efforts should be channeled into offering strategic design education.
