스트레스, 절망, 우울과 자살생각간의 구조적 관계 : 노인과 청소년의 차이 비교 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 자살생각관련 변인인 스트레스, 절망, 우울과 자살생각 간의 관계를 살펴보고 이들 간의 구조적 관계를 가장 잘 설명하는 모형을 탐색하고, 상이한 연령집단인 노인 집단과 청소년 집단의 자살생각 경로를 비교하여 유사점과 차이점을 밝히고자 하는 것이었다. 이를 위해 노인 221명과 청소년 221명에게 인구사회학적 변인과 스트레스 척도, 절망 척도, 우울 척도, 자살생각 척도로 구성된 설문지를 실시하여 그 변인들의 특성과 구조적 관계를 탐구하였다. 자료 분석에는 SPSS. WIN 15.0과 AMOS 7.0을 사용하였다.
주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 자살생각과 가장 상관이 높은 변인은 우울이었다. 노인은 청소년보다 절망을 훨씬 많이 경험하고 있었고, 청소년 집단은 노인 집단보다 스트레스를 더 많이 겪고 있으며 자살생각도 더 많이 하는 것으로 나타났다.
둘째, 우울에서의 성차는 청소년 집단에서는 나타나지 않고 노인 집단에만 나타났는데, 여성 노인이 남성 노인보다 우울을 더 많이 경험하고 있었다. 자살생각에서는 성차가 나타나지 않았다.
셋째, 경쟁모형1이 최종 모형으로 선정되었다. 경쟁모형1은 절망이 자살생각에 직접 영향을 미치는 것이 아니라 우울을 매개하여 자살생각에 영향을 미치는 구조모형이다. 이 모형은 절망이 우울을 통해서 자살생각에 영향을 미칠 뿐 아니라 우울을 통하지 않고 직접 자살생각에 이르는 연구모형이나, 절망과 우울의 상호관련이 전혀 없는 경쟁모형2보다 경험적 자료와 더 일치하였다. 그러므로 경쟁모형1이 최종모형으로 선택되었다는 것은 자살생각에 대한 절망과 우울의 매개효과에 있어 절망보다 우울의 매개 효과가 더 크다는 것을 의미하는 것이다.
넷째, 연령과 성에 따라 자살생각에 이르는 경로에 있어 집단간의 차이가 있는가를 검증하고자 다집단분석을 실시한 결과, 노인 집단과 청소년 집단간에 자살에 이르는 경로에 차이가 있었다. 즉, 청소년은 노인에 비해 스트레스를 받으면 절망이나 우울을 매개하지 않고도 쉽게 자살을 생각했고, 여성 노인이 남성 노인과 동일한 스트레스를 경험한다 해도 우울에 훨씬 더 취약한 것으로 나타났다.
이상을 통해 스트레스가 자살생각으로 이행하는 과정에서 절망보다 우울이 더 강력한 매개변인이며, 노인의 자살과 청소년의 자살은 그 경로가 다르다는 결론을 얻었다.
이 연구의 가장 큰 의의는 노인 자살생각과 청소년 자살생각을 실증적으로 비교했다는 것이다. 기존 연구는 이 두 집단의 자살기제가 다를 수 있음을 시사하였으나 이를 언급하는 수준에 머물러 있을 뿐 이를 실제로 검증한 연구는 거의 없었다. 따라서 이 연구는 이 두 집단에 동일한 측정 도구를 이용하여 그들의 자살기제를 실증적으로 검증하여 그 차이점과 유사점을 밝혔다. 이로써 이 연구는 노인과 청소년 집단의 특성에 맞는 자살의 예방과 대안 마련을 위한 초석을 마련하는데 기여했다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to investigate a structural model explaining the relationships of stress, hopelessness, and depression to suicidal ideation, and to find the difference in suicidal ideation between the elderly and the adolescent suicidal ideation
The subjects were 221 the elderly over 65 years old and 221 high school students. Socio-demographic factors, Stress scale, Hopelessness scale, Depression scale and Suicidal ideation scale were employed.
To Process the data, correlational analysis using SPSS. WIN 15.0, and the hypothetical model testing and the multi-group analysis using AMOS 7.0 were applied.
The results were as follows:
First, the suicidal ideation was strongly related to depression. The elderly experienced much more hopelessness than the adolescents while the adolescents experienced much more stress and suicidal ideation than the elderly.
Second, the gender difference in depression was observed only in the elderly while the elderly female more experienced than the elderly male.
Third, the competing model 1 was better fit to the data than the other models. This meant that depression was more powerful factor than hopelessness influencing on path between stress and suicidal ideation.
Forth, Multi-group analysis revealed that there were different paths to suicidal ideation between the elderly and adolescents. The adolescent stress brought suicidal ideation without mediating stress or hopelessness, and the elderly female was more vulnerable to stress than the elderly male.
In conclusion, depression was more powerful mediated factor than hopelessness, and the path to the elderly suicidal ideation was different from the adolescent suicidal ideation.
The finding of this study contributed to extend the understanding relationships of stress, hopelessness, and depression to suicidal ideation by comparing the elderly suicidal ideation with the adolescent suicidal ideation. Ultimately it contributed to prevent suicide of the elderly and the adolescents.
Finally, the implication and limitations of this study were discussed, and suggestion for future studies were also presented.
