The purpose of this study is to show how eco-system factors affecting adolescence’s suicide thinking, which are related to personal characteristics, family environment, school, and local community, influence on adolescence’s depression and hopelessness, and bring out some solutions to prevent adolescence from thinking suicide through analyzing how the adolescence’s depression and hopelessness affects adolescence’s suicide thinking. In order to achieve this purpose, a survey of 673 high school students living in DaeJeon city has been done. The results ended up with followings.
First, in the order of importance, self-esteem, self-control, responsive parenting, and adolescence distinction turned out to be the factors affecting adolescence’s hopelessness, and self-esteem, responsive parenting, academic performance, adolescence distinction, and group learning activity turned out to be the factors affecting adolescence’s depression. Also, as the factors affecting adolescence’s suicide thinking, self-control, responsive parenting, school attachment, academic performance, and adolescence distinction were turned out. Finally, depression was turned out for mediation factor
As results of covariance structure analysis to understand the causal relationship among these overall variables, self-esteem, self-control, responsive parenting, peer relationship, and adolescence distinction turned out to be the direct factors affecting hopelessness, and hopelessness was turned out for mediation factor in the consideration of causation between suicide thinking and its affecting factors. self-esteem, self-control, responsive parenting, peer relationship, group learning activity, and adolescence distinction were turned out to be the factors affecting depression. As the direct factor affecting suicide thinking, depression was turned out. As the indirect factor, self-esteem, self-control, responsive parenting, and adolescence distinction were turned out.
On the basis of these results, some social practice plans to prevent adolescence from thinking suicide are followings : First of all, as far as individuality goes, identifying some of adolescences who are likely to experience depression and suicide thinking, and educating them are needed for an effective, preventive strategy. Also, in the aspects of family, parent education and role training should be developed and adjusted in order to reduce the depression from family. Along with that, in the aspects of school, improvement toward achievement oriented education system and peer group supporting program should be developed and adjusted. Finally, in the aspects of local community, correcting the prejudice about suicide through campaign and reducing the adverse effect from group should be performed.
It has gotten the point where adolescence’s suicide thinking is not them atter of individuality. Rather, it has become more important issue an entire society should get involved with. In order to prevent adolescence from thinking suicide, government, academic world, and social practice field should perform long-term plans and train experts through investing human resources as well as increasing related budget.
