Colour therapy and the comparison of modern scholars' viewpoint

(Multilingual Abstract)

People live in the environment surrounded by colour. Therefore, the use of appropriate and harmonious colour in the artificial environment plays an important role in health and the quality of life. Colour influences not only physical and physiological area of human, but also emotional and spiritual area of human. So, it deserves studying as a new means of counseling. Colour therapy has been used in many different areas with the increase of interest, but the study of theoretical system has been very poor. Therefore, the theoretical system and the concrete study of scholars' healing viewpoints need to be preceded to use it as a means of counseling.
The objectives of this study are, first, to diagnose and study physical and physiological materials, emotional and mental ones and spiritual ones of colour therapy. Secondly, to compare and analyse modern scholars' healing viewpoints about each colour energy.
The findings about objective of study 1) are follows.
I classified the theoretical materials of colour energy into physical and physiological materials, emotional and mental ones and spiritual ones to study theoretical mechanism and practice of colour therapy efficiently. First, to sum up the physical and physiological materials of colour therapy are as follows. Each colour has energy by its own wavelength because the source of colour is about 400NM-700NM of visible ray, which can be perceived within the limit of human eyes. The radiation of all electromagnetic waves including that of light consists of protons as known by the physicist, Frank, the proton of light which is very special, is called photon, and it transmits energy and information in the cell. The strength of energy is related to the frequency of light, the length of wavelength. The light vibrates by the colour energy and is absorbed through our eyes and skin. Light helps us to see and produce hormone and it influences all our complex biochemical system. The biochemical system influences our emotional state.
Secondly, to sum up the emotional and mental materials of colour therapy are as follows. Chakra absorbs energy from light which moves continuously and produces wavelength. It is related to endocrine system directly, so it affects the functions of our body. Chakra is a center of human mind and has an effect on specific colour, emotional function, the organs of the body and the endocrine system. Chakra is considered as the main center of colour energy in the colour therapy theory. Also, all chakra have potential desire and mission to be satisfied. Nadis system is considered as the energy channel connecting subtle bodies(mind-prana)in yoga. Chakra absorbs life energy from subtle energy body of human, around him and universe through Nadis and converts it into the frequency which is necessary to maintaining of life and growth of physical or subtle body. Colour energy is absorbed through Nadis by this kind of energy system, it is transmitted to the physical or subtle body through chakra and get to exhibit its own quality.
Thirdly, to sum up the spiritual materials of colour energy are as follows. Aura consists of electromagnetic energy with various strength, surrounds human body with the shape of light and the colour of aura reflects our emotion, soul and physical and mental health condition. Colour energy which is absorbed through aura is transmitted to chakra by Nadis and is used for our spiritual growth.
Fourthly, to sum up the diagnosis and practice of colour energy are as follows. There are Luscher test which analyses through the choice of preferable colour cards, colour reflection reading, questionnaire test, dowsing method using pendulum, kinesiology and colour diagnosis chart in the diagnoses of colour therapy. I introduced ten assumptions to use colour therapy, and studied heliotherapy, colour bath, solarized water, colour clothes therapy, colour dietetic treatment, crystal therapy, colour breathing therapy and colour meditation therapy.
The findings about objective of study 2) are follows.
The comparison standards were set as physical and physiological viewpoint, emotional and mental one and spiritual one to compare modern scholars' viewpoints about colour therapy efficiently. To do this, Birren, F. emphasizing physical and physiological viewpoint, Howard & Dorothy Sun, emphasizing emotional and mental one and Naess, I. emphasizing spiritual one were chosen as the objects of research.
First, I presented 「table 7」, in which I compared modern scholars' physical and physiological viewpoints about the healing function of colour energy. To overall the function of each energy based on this is as follows. Most scholars presented the same opinions about the function of red energy based on lots of established studies and we can also conclude the application of colour therapy clearly. Red energy promotes growth, improves physical vitality or sexual ability and quickens blood pressure and pulse. In case of orange energy, all scholars agree that it promotes the function of digestion. Because the main center of the energy is connected with svadhisthana chakra, spleen chakra, it speeds up digestion, improves physical vitality and sexual ability and quickens the circulation of the blood. All scholars agree that yellow energy promotes metabolism. The energy is connected with manipura chakra, solar plexus chakra, so it stimulates the nervous system and the upper digestive organs. Scholars agree that green energy makes muscles relax and nerves calm down. It is connected with anahata chakra, breast chakra, so it controls heart and quickens the circulation of the blood. It is called the colour of harmony and balance, that's why it is located in the middle of cold and warm colours. In case of turquoise colour, even if it doesn't have clear main chakra, its healing function is admitted, so it is used most often when we do real colour therapy. In case of Naess, he didn't mention turquoise energy, but he is studying the energy and applying it to the healing process. It is connected with thymus gland and increases immunity and relieves inflammation. Blue energy like red energy has been studied a lot and its functions were verified. Blue energy has the opposite quality against red one. That is, it delays growth, makes muscles and nerves relax, lowers blood pressure and pulse and stabilizes nerve. It is the main energy of vishuddha chakra, neck chakra, and increases self-expression and communication skill. Even if indigo energy has the main chakra, it is not used often. That's why it is believed to have negative quality because it is similar to dark blue physically. But it is excellent in stimulating brain, it can be used to stimulate brain in case of non-nervous system patients. Also, it is the main energy of ajna chakra, the third eye chakra, so it increases intuition. Violet energy is the main colour of sahasrara chakra, the crown of the head chakra, so it stimulates pituitary gland, a pineal gland, activates hormone secretion and stimulates brain. Even if magenta energy doesn't have the main chakra, it is used very often by therapists. However, it needs to be studied more in the healing function.
Secondly, I compared and analysed viewpoints about scholars' emotional and mental healing function of colour energy and presented 「table10」, putting the healing function of each colour together based on this is as follows. Red energy is outgoing, perceives intuitively and it has a characteristic of thinking type. Orange energy is outgoing, perceives intuitively and it has a characteristic of feeling type. Yellow energy has introvert and extrovert characteristic at the same time, perceives sensuously and judges something by thinking. Green energy is located in the middle of visible ray and its main characteristics are harmony and balance. Therefore, it has every characteristic and is harmonious, it prefers intuition and thought to sense and feeling, for it is based on reality. Turquoise energy is introvert, perceives intuitively, it has a characteristic of feeling type. The function of blue energy, like that of red energy was verified through lots of studies. Blue energy is introvert, perceives sensuously and it has a characteristic of thinking type. Indigo energy is introvert, perceives intuitively and it has a characteristic of thinking type. Violet energy has a strong characteristic of intuition. Magenta energy perceives both sense and intuition and it has a characteristic of feeling type.
Thirdly, to sum up the spiritual viewpoints are as follows. Scholars are admitting the spiritual healing function of colour therapy, even though the degree they admit is a little different. Birren made clear his viewpoint through the theory of Tantric Buddhism believers and he said clearly there was no room for doubt about the spiritual efficacy of colour therapy, even if the therapy had fantastic feature. Howard & Dorothy Sun said that the movement of colour not only brought the vitality back to all tissues in body, but promoted emotional and spiritual recovery. Naess thought that we could recovery the imbalance of body, mind and spirit which existed in the state of molecule using colour language, the world common language. He presented how each colour was related spiritually.
I drew the following conclusion based on the study results and discussion until now.
First, colour therapy is a great work which was made with the meeting of ancient theoretical system and modern science. That is, the potentialities in many different areas are very suggestive, proving the healing function clearly with the meeting.
Secondly, I confirmed that colour energy had an effect on physical, emotional and even spiritual area through this study. Therefore, colour therapy can be not only used for physical and emotional health, but used as a powerful tool for the growth of consciousness.
Thirdly, many of the scholars' viewpoints were identical when I examined their viewpoints about the functions of each colour energy. Therefore, I concluded that the healing function of each colour was clear. Fourthly, after I examined the emotional and mental characteristics of colour energy, I concluded that colour energy had something to do with personality, because a person's personality could be decided by the characteristic of colour energy the person had. Therefore, colour energy test can be used as personality one.
Fifthly, colour therapy doesn't have standardized test, even if its efficacy is very clear. Through an exact test, we can understand ourselves exactly and prepare for the objective guide about the use of colour energy. Therefore, the study for preparing for reasonable tools about colour energy test needs to be done.
Lastly, the healing functions of red and blue energy were already verified clearly through lots of studies such as animal and plants tests. However, there are not many studies verifying the healing functions of middle colours such as orange, green, indigo and violet. Therefore, various studies verifying scholars' opinions needs to be done to use colour as a powerful healing tool.
