This study aims to identify the paradigm and structure of synchronicity music meditation, elucidating its effect on brain waves and psychological changes, and present opportunities for applying the effect to counseling. first, it theoretically examines the principles of change of synchronicity paradigm and verifies the effect through experiments.
The research topics of this study are 1) what are the paradigm, structure and principles of change of synchronicity music meditation? 2) What effect does synchronicity music meditation have on brain waves? 3) What effect does synchronicity music meditation have on psychological changes?
For research methods, a literature review and experiment were conducted together. for research topic 1), the literature on the paradigm of synchronicity music meditation, music as technological background, changes in brain waves, studies related to music and psychological changes, and paradigm, structure and program of synchronicity music meditation were covered.
For the research topics of 2) and 3), a synchronicity music meditation program was conducted on eleven subjects individually for one month. The number of subjects who were actually included in the analysis was seven. The subjects were divided into two experimental groups, given alpha music meditation or theta music meditation according to the subject's preference. Their brain waves were measured before and after the meditation program was given and before and after each session, given three times a week. From the measured brain wave data, relative power values were drawn and analyzed according to each group in order to identify changes by frequency band Again, coherence values were also analyzed to find out synchronous changes in both brain hemispheres.
In order to identify the effect of synchronicity music meditation on psychological changes, the subjects were asked to write reports of their experience at every session, and the reports were analyzed qualitatively. The qualitative analysis adopted referred to the process and methods of Consensual Qualitative Research, which categorizes experience data.
The findings can be summarized as follows :
Research topic 1) aims at the paradigm, structure and principles of change of a program of synchronicity music meditation.
First, the paradigm of contemporary synchronicity music meditation can be summarized as follows : One's existence as a holistic cosmic synchronicity is a multi-dimensional expression of One Consciousness. This consciousness exists in seven dimensions of 'void,' 'supra causal,' 'causal,' 'subtle,' 'mental,' 'emotional' and 'physical.' This 'One Consciousness' creates the Relative Field, which is the arena of all experiences, and engages itself in Creation Games in the arena. In the Relative Field, the negative pole is stronger, which confines a human being to the illusion in which they cannot realize the truth that a human being is of 'One Consciousness' as a Source. However, the whole experience as a human being is a process of gradually becoming an integrative whole and of placing a person in joy and delight as they become aware of themselves as one consciousness. This process is multi-dimensional and multi-leveled. This integration requires a balanced lifestyle to realize the integrative whole because it is based upon balance in the Relative field. There is a Conscious Integrative Lifestyle Model that brings about the outer balance necessary for internal balance.
Second, in synchronicity music meditation, a human body is perceived as an individual which sympathizes with the sounds, based upon wider concepts of sound and music as creative sources. Thus, their supportive point of view is that the use of holy sound and scientific electronic sound stimulation can bring positive changes to human beings. Based upon this principle, meditation music is produced by combining holy sound and the scientific principles of binaural beat and holodynamics. This music along with assistant programs to settle meditation in daily life is designed to facilitate changes in brain waves and to bring about several changes that take place in deep meditation states.
Third, synchronicity music meditation, either activating or controlling frequency bands in the brain, increases the synchronism of the two hemispheres. From this result, an effect of purification and integration can be expected. In this process, the music helps integration into 'nondualistic alertness' by maintaining the balance of the basic dimensions of consciousness - body am mind and the mental dimension.
Research topics 2) and 3) aim to identify the effect of synchronicity music meditation on brain waves and psychological changes and to search for possibilities to use it in the areas of counseling and psychic cure.
The findings on topic 2) are as follows :
First, it was found that alpha waves increased just after meditation in the alpha music Meditation group. However, its continuity did not show consistent results, and did not have consistent results with the changes of other frequencies. Compared to basic rhythms, alpha waves decreased in the process of lowering large values and increasing small values when laterality in the brain was great.
Second, theta music meditation activated alpha waves, theta waves and SMR waves while decreasing delta waves. The effect of theta music lasted not only after meditation but also until the next meditation.
Third, both alpha and theta music meditation increased synchronism in both left and right brains. The influence is bigger just after meditation, but though it decreased slightly it lasted with the passage of time.
Fourth, given the patterns of changes, at the initial stage of the experiment, the range of change between the pre- and post-experiment by frequency band was very big. The range of change decreased and reduced until the interim stage, and gradually increased thereafter This was distinctive to the changes of alpha wave and theta waves. This finding shows that at the initial stage of music mediation the change is remarkable ; with passage of time, the effect may reduce but with more passage of time it increases again.
The findings about the topic 3) are as follows :
First, experience content in music meditation is divided into two major areas of 'experience content of purification though watching' and 'life areas with positive effect and experience content.' 'Experience content of purification though watching' includes a total of twenty categories such as 'raising awareness of latent emotions,' 'understanding and insight into the causes of negative emotions,' 'objective self-awareness' and 'experience beyond mind,' etc. 'Life areas with positive effect and experience content' contain a total of sixteen categories such as 'decreased impulsiveness,' sense of stability and peace,' 'decreased attachment,' 'understanding, respect and sympathy of others' and 'watching.'
Second, the 'experience of purification though watching' has a distinct emotional effect. The responses with positive emotions typically showed the process of 'raising awareness of latent emotions,' in which one becomes aware of their own emotional state not realized in their ordinary life.
Third, 'life areas with positive effect' also have distinct changes in the areas of personality and emotion. In particular, it generally showed that the subjects got to control their feelings better and have reduced impulsiveness.
Fourth, synchronicity music meditation makes subjects experience self-understanding and self-acceptance, freedom form relationships with others, and the joy and delight of their inner world through the process of 'watching' during meditation or daily life. In other words, it makes subjects experience peace and quietness with confidence by confirming themselves as 'watchers' who are not attached to the outer environment or other objects. In this sense, it can be said that synchronicity music meditation can be used as a means of transcendentalist health counseling in terms of the whole person at a higher level.
In conclusion, the result of this study are summarise as follows :
First, synchronicity music meditation can have a positive effect on brain waves and psychological changes. In particular, in a counseling setting, it can play the role of an aide in helping clients solve their problems by themselves by recovering the client's self-perception ability and facilitating self-understanding.
Second, synchronicity music meditation can be used as a tool for brain waves and psychological changes and for general public health. Alpha music mediation can be used for physical or psychological relaxation and stress relief. Theta music meditation can be used for psychological changes by facilitating images and making people re-experience unconscious emotions.
Third, synchronicity music meditation shows the potential for be use as a way of transcendental health counseling in terms of the whole person at a higher level.
Fourth, for the methods of using synchronicity music in a counseling setting, 1) it is desirable to check an individual's psychological state and brain waves and before conducting music meditation ; 2) music meditation alone can be given to individuals and groups in a non-linguistic way. It can be more efficient when connected with counseling methods ; 3) it can be used as a tool for the counselor's own spiritual growth and change.
Fifth, as shown in the experimental results, music and meditation using music have a variety of patterns of change. Thus, future studies are needed on the effect of music and music meditation.
