귀국 청소년의 국내생활 적응에 관한 질적 연구 = A Qualitative Study on the In-country Adjustment of Korean Adolescents Returning Back from Studying Abroad

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to explore in-country adjustment experiences of Korean adolescents who returning from studying abroad and to understand how they adjust themselves to the Korean culture psycho-socially and school life after experiencing different culture in a foreign country after at least 2 through 5 years living abroad. For these purposes, the in-depth interviews were conducted targeting 8 Korean adolescents between ages of 12 and 17 (five males and 3 females), who visited Korea Youth Counseling Center with their parents or by recommendations of their affiliated schools, due to their school maladjustment issues. All adolescents had experiences staying and enrolling in school abroad as an international student in U.S., China, Germany, New Zealand, Philippine, United Kingdom. The analyses were made by applying a qualitative research method of Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) analyses. The analyses resulted in 15 domains and 57 categories: the reasons as to why they leave for their study abroad, the reasons as to why they are returning back from studying overseas, cultural differences what they are perceiving between Korea and the countries stayed before returning, their positive and negative experiences in school- and normal-life when studying abroad, maladaptive in-country experiences after returning, cultural identity issues, mechanism coping with adjustment stress, and typical characteristics of adolescents displaying maladaptive behaviors. The implications from findings are discussed. The findings will provide some useful information for understanding in-country adjustment experiences psycho-socially and developing counseling programs for supporting them.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 귀국 청소년의 귀국 후 국내생활적응에 대한 내적 경험의 특징을 알아보고자 해외생활이 2년 이상 5년 이하인 만 12-17세의 청소년 중 귀국 후 부적응을 경험하는 8명의 학생을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하고 이들 자료를 합의에 의한 질적 연구(CQR: Consensual Qualitative Research) 방법에 의하여 분석하였다. 연구결과는 최종적으로 15개의 영역과 57개 범주로 구분되었다. 귀국청소년들이 해외로 나가게 되는 경우는 부모님의 결정에 의해서거나 국내에서 학교생활 부적응을 경험하고 출국하는 것으로 나타났다. 귀국 시 계획과 다르게 갑작스럽게 귀국하는 경우 국내생활에 대해 불안을 갖게 되고 이러한 부정적인 경험은 국내생활 적응에 어려움을 갖게 하는 것으로 나타났다. 귀국 청소년들은 해외생활 경험과 귀국 후 국내생활에 대한 비교에서 가장 큰 차이로 학교생활과 교육방식의 차이를 보고하였다. 특히 교사의 태도, 급우와의 관계, 수업방식 측면에서 학교생활의 어려움을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 귀국 후 부적응에 대한 경험을 좀 더 세분하여 살펴보면 문화 및 자기정체감 혼란, 대인관계 어려움, 학교생활 부적응, 언어사용의 한계, 주거환경의 변화에 대한 불편 등으로 나타났다. 귀국 청소년들은 국내 적응을 잘하기 위해 해외에서의 경험을 드러내지 않고 조용히 지낼 것을 요구 받는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 적응의 어려움이 있을 때 대처 방법으로 문제를 해결하려고 혼자 애쓰는 것, 대리물(게임, 인형)을 통한 스트레스 해소, 가족이나 친구의 도움을 받는 것, 상담 받기 등의 적극적인 모습 외에도 스트레스를 혼자 견디거나 쌓아두고 마음을 삭히는 등의 소극적인 모습도 있었다. 이러한 소극적 대처 경험은 대인관계의 어려움 및 학교 부적응의 문제와 연결되어 자해나 우울, 기물파손 등의 문제로 발전하기도 하였다. 본 연구 결과는 귀국 청소년의 국내생활 적응 과정에 대한 내적 경험들을 이해함으로써 귀국 청소년을 위한 전문적인 상담 및 개입전략을 수립하는데 기초자료를 제시할 것으로 기대된다.
