어릴 적 외상 경험이 공감 능력에 미치는 영향 = The Effect of Early Traumatic Experience on Empathetic Ability

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study was aimed to examine the effect of early traumatic experience on empathic understanding ability and empathetic responsiveness to others. 237 students answered the questionnaire consisting of CTQ, IRI, BLRI-EU, and IES-R. Correlation analysis, analysis of variance, and regression analysis were employed to test hypotheses. Negative correlation between early traumatic experience and BLRI-empathic understanding subscale was found. Moreover, emotional neglect among traumatic experiences showed unique influence on lowering the empathic understanding. On the other hand, Davis's IRI empathy score showed the opposite aspect: IRI's emotional dimension had a positive relation with early traumatic experience. The findings of this study suggested that the emotional reactivity to others tends to increase but empathic understanding tends to decrease when people experience the emotional abuse and neglect in their childhood. Lastly, the implications and limitations of this study are discussed.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 어릴 적 외상 경험, 즉 학대와 방임과 같은 경험이 타인에 대한 공감적 이해 능력과 대인관계 반응성으로서의 공감 능력에 미치는 영향을 각각 살펴보았다. 237명의 응답자에게 아동기 외상 질문지(Childhood Trauma Questionnaire: CTQ), 대인관계 반응성 지수(Interpersonal Reactivity Index: IRI), 공감적 이해 소척도(Barret-Lennard Relationship Inventory- Empathic Understanding Subscale: BLRI-EU), 개정판 사건충격 척도(Impact Event Scale-Revised: IES-R)를 작성하도록 하였고, 수집한 자료를 활용하여 상관분석, 변량분석, 회귀분석을 시도하였다. 연구 결과, 어릴 적 외상경험은 BLRI 공감적 이해 소척도 점수와 부적 상관을 나타냈고, 특히 외상경험 중 정서적 방임이 공감적 이해 점수 저하에 고유한 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 Davis(1983)의 IRI 척도로 측정한 대인관계 반응성은 반대의 양상을 보였는데, 특히 IRI의 정서적 차원이 어릴 적 외상 경험과 정적 상관을 나타냈다. 이로 미루어볼 때 어릴 적 가까운 이로부터 정서적 학대나 방임을 경험하면 타인에 대한 정서적 반응성은 증가할 수 있고 반면 공감적 이해는 손상되는 것으로 보인다. 끝으로 본 연구의 의의 및 한계를 논의하였다.
