This study applies a combined literature and culture education to Korean literature education in liberal arts targeted towards foreign students. In addition, it suggests a field study project as an example. In lectures on Korean literature in liberal arts for foreign students, the understanding of Korean literature history, characteristics of Korean literature, current state of the process, furthermore, and the importance and the value of Korean literature as part of world literature will be taught and learnt. One of the main successive factors in the process of teaching and learning such content depends on learners. For the foreign students, teaching Korean history and society that are the backgrounds of Korean literature history and literary works that should be accompanied with. For the very reason, it is desirable to be combined with cultural education. The author reasons that the field study project is a method that helps the learners to inquire independently and absorb knowledge as their own. The intended location for this lecture was Jongno, Seoul, and the goal of the class was to develop the understanding and appreciation by looking into the cultural heritage and the regarding literary works of the intended location together. The author let the students follow three steps to lead the project: first, it was a pre-stage for the field study project for which they planned and investigated. Second step was a stage for carrying out the project, students visit the place they chose and investigated. Third, was the evaluating and finishing stage, students organize the academic achievement and the meaning of the project. In each step, they made a checklist in order to improve the planning and reduce problems. Descriptive rather than analytic in its approach, this article attempts to explore disputes over translation between Joo-dong Yang and the Society for Research in Foreign Literature, a literary society established by Korean students who majored in foreign literature at colleges in Tokyo, Japan, in the late 1920s. The debates occurred in the spring of 1927 when Yang criticized most of translations in Foreign Literature, a magazine published by the members of the Society for Research in Foreign Literature, for being poor―so poor, in fact, that they could be seen as “a nearly total failure.” Yang’s somewhat acrimonious criticism was based on three premises: 1) translators should employ fluent style so that the reader of the target text may have easy access to the translated works; 2) they must try to render the source text into the target language freely rather than render it too literally; and 3) they should be very careful when they use loan-words and calques. A strong defender of the Korean language as well as Korean literature, Joo-dong Yang argues that the translators have failed in these three aspects and that most of the translations in Foreign Literature suffer pitifully where readability is concerned. Some members of the Society, such as Ha-yoon Lee, Chin-sup Kim, and In-sob Zong, immediately joined in answering back to Yang’s critique, pointing out that new vocabulary and phrases, however strange and awkward they seemed at first, would become domesticated. Cosmopolitan in their weltanschauung, the members strongly maintained that loan-words and calques in translation would eventually contribute to the development of the target language.

In so far as literature is an established subject in current university education, those involved in teaching literature cannot be free from the obligation to take part in a more down-to-earth discussion of its practical features, above all the business of assessing and grading student performance. Such obligation has become more incumbent due to the increasingly vociferous criticism offered by the language education specialists, from whose perspective the presence of literature in a foreign language education program is an anomaly, for literary language, in their view, is the diametrical opposite of the authentic current language which they seek to teach with maximum efficiency. Faced with such criticism, literature teachers can do worse than to go to the very roots of literary education, drawing from the classical, medieval, as well as modern precedents, a more systematic program of assessment, which we propose as a three-fold structure. First comes the philological dimension, for literature is part of a general cultural history, and since factual knowledge of literary phenomena is bound to form the basis for more sophisticated discussions. Philological understanding also embraces grammar, the first subject of medieval trivium, since the ability to comprehend a foreign language in its best classical samples must be claimed as an educational objective addressed in literature courses. Philological assessment, however, must be supplemented by hermeneutic assessment, for literary education, as an essential core of general liberals arts, must encourage the students to draw personal meaning (or “significance”) from the texts: the thought experiment conducted in each discussion session is bound to broaden the sympathies and mentalities of the students. Finally, literary education should never shy away from using the texts as instruments for various rhetorical games and exercises. Such activities as re-writing, imitation, performance, and adaptations would enhance the pragmatic value of literature courses both in the eyes of the students and in the eyes of the university administration.

Vol.- No.29
This paper examines the way of synthesizing the education of the Korean language, literature, and culture by using Korean traditional poetry, especially for Korean language learners from other countries. As the Korean language education is basically linked with Korean culture education, traditional literatures are effective ways to combine all those sides: language, literature, and culture. This paper especially delves into the work Dong-Dong among old Korean poems. This paper is important and has its meaning in that there has rarely been the studies on the combined way of Korean culture education. In chapter two, the importance and necessity of Korean literature education using traditional poetry is examined. In chapter three, Dong-Dong is translated into the modern Korean language and analyzed considering the language ability of the foreign Korean learners. In chapter four, Korean traditional factors in Dong-Dong are considered. In chapter five, using Dong-Dong, the combined way of educating the Korean language, literature and culture is studied. Finally in chapter six, concerning this combined education, its meaning and what's still left to be examined are considered.

This paper aims to retrace the processes by which the 37th PEN International Congress took place in Seoul, and thereby reveal the methods by which influence in the literary sphere of South Korea acted under the Cold War system and the results they produced, as a touchstone of the many issues and problems arising in the process by which a work of literature gains recognition in its linguistic sphere and is translated into other languages. It examines the process by which the 37th PEN International Congress was bid for and organized, through newspapers, magazines, official materials from the event, and the selection of works published post-congress, to discuss how the ‘classic’ status is conferred upon certain works in a nation’s literary sphere as well as the politics of globalization in translation. The 37th PEN International Congress held by the International PEN Korea Center in 1970 in Seoul was a major international event supported not just by the literary sphere but by the power of the state as well. The process by which the congress was bid for, prepared and held, followed by the establishment of the Asian Writers’ Translation Bureau for the publication of Asian Literature as a follow-up project, was the first time the Korean literary sphere gave earnest thought to the globalization of Korean literature. In the process of preparing for the congress, questions of how Korean literature should be introduced to international readers as well as which authors and works should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature were raised. In the discussion of such questions, serious and detailed consideration was given to which works should be translated and how, in order to transcend the borders of nation and language, in addition to whether Korean literature could become a part of global literature.

The purpose of this article is to review the process that how 'the new century literature' has developed through the 'new media literature' phenomenon represented by Internet and SMS (text message) literature, which began to be mentioned at the same time with the naming of 'the new century literature' and to contemplate its literary concept, which is manifested through its engaging capacity and limitation towards 'new media literature'. Then, what is 'new media literature'? According to the existing opinions, since new media literature has not changed the fundamental characteristics that "literature is the art of language", the emergence of new media literature has only created a new 'storage device' of language while maintaining the methods of its existence so far such as oral or written forms. Therefore, new media literature is said to belong to the studies on the externals of literature as it cannot have independence as a literature genre and its implications are mainly focused on literary activities. However, in my opinion, the method of existence of language has changed due to the emergence of new media, which has in turn enriched linguistic expressions and creativity. In addition, the changes in the methods of literary activities will play a significant role in adjusting internal power relations of literature and will bring about a major change in literature production system. The Internet literature in China commenced in about 1988 and has developed into BBS literature, literature of professional literature sites, e-magazine literature, blog literature, and SMS (text message) literature. Nonetheless, for this 'new media literature', 'the new century literature' shows only "limited capacity" engaging only part of it. According to this perspective, first, the 'new' of the 'new century literature' is not only the 'new' of 'new media', but also means that what it contemplates the most importantly is still that whether the history of the traditional paper literature can continue or not. Second, the overall attitude towards 'new media literature' is located in the position of popular literature or goods literature in contrast of 'serious literature'. Third, visual media literature represented by images and its influence draw more attention than new media literature represented by the Internet and its influence. Fourth, 'the new century literature' engages different genres of 'new media literature' all differently. Fifth, 'the new century literature' considers literature creation and criticism of 'new media literature' more importantly. In conclusion, with regard to this discussion, I would like to point out several issues that need to be resolved urgently. First, the 'new' of 'the new century literature' is, from a broader perspective, a comparative concept in contrast with the 20th-century traditional literature history. If 'the new century literature' wants to make a comment on the trend of literature development in the future, it should overcome the desire to become a 'historian' by itself. Only then will it be able to keep its vitality forever. Second, the literary development of 'new media literature' goes through processes from 'media shock' to 'media adaptation', and then again to 'media oblivion'. These processes mean 'the new media technology' is turning into 'literature technology' through internalization, which eventually means the methods of literary art are increasing copiously. Third, if 'the new century literature' engages 'new media literature' with a broader capacity, it should overcome the existing writing practices requiring and trying to select 'new media literature' with a 'literature canonization' attitude, canon writer and cannon literature.

The previous domestic and foreign research on the earliest beginning, development and decline of the East African novel in English has been restricted to a few writers including Ngugi Wa Thiong"o, causing an imbalance in the literary study of this region. The meaning of this article is to consider, through the examples of individual countries, writers, and literary works, not being biased by specific literary critics and doctrines, the process of the development of the East African novel in English. One important factor among many others that contributed to the birth of the East African Anglophone novel writing in 1960s was the Makerere university at Kampala in Uganda and the students" literary activities centering around this university, which will be dealt with in chapter II. Chapter III will discuss the role of the popular fiction which contributed to the understanding and spread of the new concept of the novel in East Africa. The writers and intellectuals who left Uganda and Tanzania and came to Kenya seeking the freedom of expression and language selection continued, through the cooperation and competition in good faith among themselves, to try to establish the identity of the East African literature. Ngugi"s decision not to use English in his novel writing was to represent this effort of his fellow writers for the independence of African literature, and it also meant the decline of English novel in East Africa. This study begins with the common misconception caused by literary approach. For instance, attempting to understand romanticism only from literary perspective creates problems and these issues are reflected during the process of distinguishing arts. Generally speaking, research shows that romanticism follows the common perception of “anti-classicism.” Nonetheless, there is still evidence that some aspects of romanticism still need to be defined. This is especially true when comparing Weimar classicism and Jena pre-romanticism along with Goethe or art era’s overlap. In this aspect, the research back tracks the process of romanticism poetry formulation and its attempt to define the dynamic relationship. This paper will analyze pre-romanticism through the historical events written in Friedrich Schlegel’s essays prior to Athenaum. In this work, the intentions of pre-romanticism will be re-evaluated in its own cultural context. As commonly known, Schlegel brothers represented literary criticism of pre-romanticism throughout the Europe’s literature history. Their focus begins in classical literature of ancient Greece and Rome from Dante, Cervantes, Shakespeare to European classicism including Jacobi, Wieland, Herder, Goethe in the same age literature. In reality, pre-romanticism’s fundamental hermeneutics and literature perspective came from this type of research. Schlegel’s modernity that moved the pre-romanticism forward can be used to bridge the two. In conclusion, pre-romanticism does not open a new perspective in the history of literature. However, this trend of literature expresses the essence of literature and its introspection. Romantic poetry combines the Antithese to explain the universality of literature and its path.
Vol.- No.79
Usually, Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) has been read as an “accusation” and “propaganda”, but this paper humbly tries to examine it from a literary point of view. So-called the “genealogy” of Russian documentary literature is made from Dostoevsky s The House of the Dead and goes on to Svetlana Alexievich s The Unwomanly Face of War. In this context, the literary meaning of Solzhenitsyn s “concentration camp literature” is mentioned. Exploring his One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, this paper focuses on three meals a day and analyzes the scene of labor-work. It is really a bitter irony that Shukhov and other “zeki” are the ideal types of a “positive hero (Homo Sovieticus)” and Solzhenitsyn s novella is an incarnation of Socialist Realism. Indeed, the sincere literary dictation of one ordinary day in limited time and space goes beyond a historical “uslovnost” and obtains literary authenticity.
