      • Multi-modality image fusion based on enhanced fuzzy radial basis function neural networks

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In clinical applications, single modality images do not provide sufficient diagnostic information. Therefore, it is necessary to combine the advantages or complementarities of different modalities of images. Recently, neural network technique was applied to medical image fusion by many researchers, but there are still many deficiencies. In this study, we propose a novel fusion method to combine multi-modality medical images based on the enhanced fuzzy radial basis function neural network (Fuzzy-RBFNN), which includes five layers: input, fuzzy partition, front combination, inference, and output. Moreover, we propose a hybrid of the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) and error back propagation algorithm (EBPA) to train the network to update the parameters of the network. Two different patterns of images are used as inputs of the neural network, and the output is the fused image. A comparison with the conventional fusion methods and another neural network method through subjective observation and objective evaluation indexes reveals that the proposed method effectively synthesized the information of input images and achieved better results. Meanwhile, we also trained the network by using the EBPA and GSA, individually. The results reveal that the EBPGSA not only outperformed both EBPA and GSA, but also trained the neural network more accurately by analyzing the same evaluation indexes.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We have developed conventional fuzzy radial basis function (Fuzzy-RBF) neural network. </LI> <LI> We proposed new method to train and update the neural network system. </LI> <LI> We have successfully applied improved fuzzy-RBF neural network to medical image fusion. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Occupational Safety & Health Management and Corporate Sustainability: The Mediating Role of Affective Commitment

        Background: Occupational safety & health management (OSH) has garnered greater attention for its significance in promoting corporate sustainability for organizations in recent decades. The construction industry, in particular, is a major contributor to Malaysia’s thirst for corporate sustainability in order to provide long-term support for the country. Thus, the main tenet of this study is to examine the mediating effect of employee affective commitment on the relationship between OSH and corporate sustainability. Methods: A questionnaire was administered to 273 full-time employees of listed construction companies in Malaysia. Smart PLS software version 3 was used to test the proposed model and hypotheses. Both the measurement model and the structural model were evaluated. Results: According to the findings, OSH and its dimensions are positively related to employee affective commitment. Employee affective commitment, on the other hand, has been found to be significantly related to corporate sustainability and its dimensions: economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Apart from this, the prominent results reveal that employee affective commitment partially mediates the relationship between OSH and corporate sustainability and its dimensions: economic, social, and environmental sustainability. Conclusion: This empirical finding adds to the existing literature in explaining how OSH and affective commitment led to corporate sustainability. Several implications are offered to various stakeholders, such as construction companies, policymakers, and relevant regulators.

        17세기 한중 실학자의 교육개혁안 비교연구 -유형원과 황종희를 중심으로

        본 논문은 17세기 한중양국의 유명한 사상가 유형원(柳馨遠)과 황종희(黃宗羲) 각각의 대표작인 『반계수록(磻溪隨錄)』과 『명이대방록(明夷待訪錄)』을 중심으로 두 사람이 구상한 교육개혁방안을 비교하여 17세기 동아시아 국제정세 격동기에 한중양국 사상활동의 특징을 밝히려고 시도한다. 논문은 우선 유형원과 황종희 각각의 생애, 저서활동, 그리고 『반계수록』과 『명이대방록』의 내용을 정리하기를 통해 두 사람은 살았던 역사적인 환경은 두사람의 개혁사상에 미치는 영향과 그들이 구상하는 이상 사회의 모습을 설명하려고 한다. 다음 필자가 교육제도개혁과 인재선발제도 두 측면에 초점을 맞춰『반계수록』과 『명이대방록』에서 각각 그리는 교육개혁방안을 분류하고 정리한 다음에 두 사람의 교육개혁방안에 대한 비교를 통해 그들의 교육개혁의 비슷함과 차이점을 논술한다. 유형원의 교육개혁의 핵심은 인재의 덕행을 중요시하는것은 중심으로 두어 체계화된 교육체제와 인재선발제도를 구축하는 것과 달리, 황종희의 교육개혁의 핵심은 학교의 정치에 참여하여 정무를 논의하는 기능을 강화시키고, 관진엄출(寬進嚴出)의 인재선발제도를 채택하여 군주전제를 제어하려는 것이다. 마지막으로 상술한 정리와 분석을 통해 결론을 내린다. 유형원과 황종희는 같은 시기(조선왕조의 중후기와 명청교체기)에 다른 나라에서 살았지만, 두 사람은 다 유가경전에 직접 회귀하는 것으로 당시 형이상학적인 주자학의 속박에서 벗어나려고 시도하였다. 그들은 경세치용(經世致用)의 시각으로 각각의 나라가 품고 있는 문제점들을 살피며 각자의 개혁방안을 제기하였다. Based on the Bangye-Surok(磻溪隨錄) and Ming-yi Dai-fang Lu(明夷待訪錄), written by Yu Hyeong-won(柳馨遠, 1622~1673) and Huang tsung-hsi(黃宗羲, 1610~1695) the two prominent thinkers in South Korea and China in the 17<sup>th</sup> century, This study tries to reveal the characteristics of South Korea and China`s ideological activities in a period of the historical structure`s upheaval in East Asia, by comparing the education reform plans conceived by the two people. This study, first, tries to explain the influence of the historical environment they lived in on the two people`s reform thoughts, and the features of the ideal society they envisaged, by arranging their career, writing activities and the content of the Bangye-Surok and Ming-yi Dai-fang Lu, severally. And then this study sorts out the education reform plans delineated in the Bangye- Surok and Ming-yi Dai-fang Lu from the fellow two aspects, which is the reform of the educational system and the selection system of talented people. By comparing their education reform plans, this study discusses the similarities and differences of the two people`s education reform, and points out that the core of Yu Hyeong-won`s education reform is to constructing systematic education system and selection system by emphasizing the importance of talents` moral conduct, but Huang tsung-hsi wanted to achieve the purpose of limiting the autocratic monarchy through strengthening the function of the schools` political participation and adopting the “easy in and strict out” selection system. Finally, the conclusion is drawn through the above analysis. Although Yu Hyeong-won and Huang tsung-hsi were the prominent thinkers who lived in different countries in the same period, but they both tried to directly return to Confucian classics(儒敎經典), and slip the leash of the metaphysical Zhuzi`s Theory(朱子學). With the statecraft viewpoint to re-analyze the problems which their countries suffered, they brought forward their own reform plans.

        Effects of Myogenin on Expression of Late Muscle Genes through MyoD-Dependent Chromatin Remodeling Ability of Myogenin

        MyoD and myogenin (Myog) recognize sets of distinct but overlapping target genes and play different roles in skeletal muscle differentiation. MyoD is sufficient for near-full expression of early targets, while Myog can only partially enhance expression of MyoD-initiated late muscle genes. However, the way in which Myog enhances the expression of MyoD-initiated late muscle genes remains unclear. Here, we examine the effects of Myog on chromatin remodeling at late muscle gene promoters and their activation within chromatin environment. Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay showed that Myog selectively bound to the regulatory sequences of late muscle genes. Overexpres-sion of Myog was found to overcome sodium butyrate-inhibited chromatin at late muscle genes in differ-entiating C2C12 myoblasts, shifting the transcriptional activation of these genes to an earlier time period. Furthermore, overexpression of Myog led to increased hyperacetylation of core histone H4 in differentiating C2C12 myoblasts but not NIH3T3 fibroblasts, and hyperacetylated H4 was associated directly with the late muscle genes in differentiating C2C12, indicating that Myog can induce chromatin remodeling in the presence of MyoD. In addition, co-immunopre-cipitation (CoIP) revealed that Myog was associated with the nuclear protein Brd4 in differentiating C2C12 myoblasts. Together, these results suggest that Myog enhances the expression of MyoD-initiated late muscle genes through MyoD-dependent ability of Myog to induce chromatin remodeling, in which Myog-Brd4 interaction may be involved.

        Autonomous Lane Keeping System: Lane Detection, Tracking and Control on Embedded System

        Autonomous lane keeping system is the key technique to autonomous driving. It includes lane detection, lane tracking and control. It has been developed enormously, but it is still a challenge work due to diff erent factors such as illumination, general hyper-parameters setting for diff erent road condition and lane boundary correction. In addition, due to imbalance on accuracy and processing time, it is hard to conduct in embedding system. In this study, an autonomous lane keeping system is developed based on deep learning. First, a lane detection and tracking system is designed, which is robust to lane boundary correction. Especially for lane detection, a light-weight network named as LaneFCNet is proposed, which can balance accuracy and processing time. Then, lane tracking was followed by detector to improve the detection performance and create autonomous driving trajectory. Finally, to brief lane fi tting problem, it was treated as ridge regression problem, which can enhance the eff ectiveness to the whole system. Experimental results show that our integrated lane detection and tracking system can trade off accuracy and processing time and the whole line keeping system is robust enough to autonomous driving.

        Compatibility of Neural Stem Cells with Functionalized Selfassembling Peptide Scaffold In vitro

        In this study, we evaluated the behavior of neural stem cells (NSCs) using a new peptide hydrogel scaffold named IKVAVmx, which was made by mixing self-assembling peptide RADA16 and designer peptide RADA16-IKVAV solutions. NSCs derived from rat cerebral cortex were culture-expanded in neuorobasal medium and seeded on the RADA16 and IKVAVmx hydrogels. Cells could penetrate the hydrogels and form a 3D cellular network. Compared to pure RADA16 scaffold, we found that IKVAVmx scaffold significantly promoted cell proliferation and stimulated cell migration into the 3D scaffold. Moreover, Immunocytochemistry and Western blot analysis indicated that the differentiation ratio of neurons from NSCs in IKVAVmx scaffold was higher than that in pure RADA16 scaffold. These results suggested that this new hydrogel scaffold provided an ideal substrate for NSCs 3D culture and suggested its further application for neural tissue engineering.

        Characteristic and role of chromosomal type II toxin-antitoxin systems locus in Enterococcus faecalis ATCC29212

        The Gram-positive bacterium Enterococcus faecalis is currently one of the major pathogens of nosocomial infections. The lifestyle of E. faecalis relies primarily on its remarkable capacity to face and survive in harsh environmental conditions. Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems have been linked to the growth control of bacteria in response to adverse environments but have rarely been reported in Enterococcus. Three functional type II TA systems were identified among the 10 putative TA systems encoded by E. faecalis ATCC29212. These toxin genes have conserved domains homologous to MazF (DR75_ 1948) and ImmA/IrrE family metallo-endopeptidases (DR75_ 1673 and DR75_2160). Overexpression of toxin genes could inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli. However, the toxin DR75_1673 could not inhibit bacterial growth, and the bacteriostatic effect occurred only when it was coexpressed with the antitoxin DR75_1672. DR75_1948–DR75_1949 and DR75_ 160–DR75_2161 could maintain the stable inheritance of the unstable plasmid pLMO12102 in E. coli. Moreover, the transcription levels of these TAs showed significant differences when cultivated under normal conditions and with different temperatures, antibiotics, anaerobic agents and H2O2. When DR75_2161 was knocked out, the growth of the mutant strain at high temperature and oxidative stress was limited. The experimental characterization of these TAs loci might be helpful to investigate the key roles of type II TA systems in the physiology and environmental stress responses of Enterococcus.

      • Aberrant Expression of the Autocrine Motility Factor Receptor Correlates with Poor Prognosis and Promotes Metastasis in Gastric Carcinoma

        AMFR, autocrine motility factor receptor, also called gp78, is a cell surface cytokine receptor which has a dual role as an E3 ubiquitin ligase in endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation. AMFR expression is associated with tumor malignancy. We here investigated the clinical significance of AMFR and its role in metastasis and prognosis in gastric cancer. Expression of AMFR, E-cadherin and N-cadherin in cancer tissues and matched adjacent normal tissues from 122 gastric cancer (GC) patients undergoing surgical resection was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Levels of these molecules in 17 cases selected randomly were also analysed by Western blotting. AMFR expression was significantly increased in gastric cancer tissues, and associated with invasion depth and lymph node metastasis. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed AMFR expression correlated with poor overall survival and an increased risk of recurrence in the GC cases. Cox regression analysis suggested AMFR to be an independent predictor for overall and recurrence-free survival. E-cadherin expression was decreased in gastric cancer tissues; conversely, N-cadherin was increased. Expression of AMFR negatively correlated with E-cadherin expression, whereas N-cadherin expression showed a significant positive correlation with AMFR expression. AMFR might be involved in the regulation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition, with aberrant expression correlating with a poor prognosis and promoting invasion and metastasis in GCs.
