The present study investigated the habitats of Korean fir trees (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson) on Mt. Baekwun (Baekwun-san), determined the current distribution, quantified the contribution of biological and nonbiological environmental factors affecting the distribution, derived actual and potential habitats, presented a plan for the establishment of protected areas, applied RCP 8.5 climate change scenario to analyze the effects of climate change on the future distribution of Korean fir trees, and predicted future potential habitats. According to the results of the study, 3,325 Korean fir trees (DBH >= 2.5 cm) inhabited Mt. Baekwun, and their distribution area was approximately 150 ha. Populations of Korean fir trees were confirmed to exist at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and were distributed up to 1,200 m. Based on potential distribution, areas appropriate for habitation by Korean fir trees were analyzed to be 450 ha, three times the current distribution area, with a focus on Sang Peak (Sang-bong), Eokbul Peak (Eokbul-bong), Ddari Peak (Ddari-bong), and Dosol Peak (Dosol-bong). The forest stands near Sang Peak, the main peak, were evaluated as those with the most appropriate potential for the habitation of Korean fir trees, and populations of the trees tended to prefer the northern slope rather than the southern slope. When climate change scenario RCP 8.5 was applied and future potential distribution was analyzed, the habitats were expected to decrease in area to 20 ha by 2050, with a focus on Sang Peak, and areas appropriate for habitation were predicted not to exist by 2080. Judging from such results, as global warming accelerates, the habitats of Korean fir trees are clearly expected to move from lowlands to highlands.

Midbrain atrophy in subcortical ischemic vascular dementia.
Sung, Young-Hee,Park, Ki-Hyung,Lee, Yeung-Bae,Park, Hyeon-Mi,Shin, Dong Jin,Park, Jea-Sul,Oh, Mi-Sun,Ma, Hyeo-Il,Yu, Kyung-Ho,Kang, Suk-Yun,Kim, Yun Joong,Lee, Byung-Chul Springer-Verlag [etc.] 2009 Journal of neurology: Zeitschrift für Neurolo Vol.256 No.12

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has revealed age-related changes in midbrain volume in normal subjects. Atrophy of the midbrain in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) has been demonstrated using conventional brain MRI, and it was recently reported that some patients with vascular dementia also have midbrain atrophy. The aim of the present study was to investigate if the patients with subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (SIVD) have atrophic changes in the midbrain. MRIs of 23 SIVD patients, 18 probable PSP patients, and 96 controls were retrospectively analyzed. Differences in the distances between midbrain structures were compared across the patient groups and controls. We measured the anteroposterior diameter (AP), and the distance between the interpeduncular fossa and the aqueduct (IF???AQ), the aqueduct and posterior margin of the superior colliculi (AQ???SC), and the peduncular prominence and the interpeduncular fossa (PP???IF) of the midbrain. The AP diameter and IF???AQ were negatively correlated with age in normal controls (r = -0.21, p < 0.005 for AP; r = -0.14, p < 0.0001 for IF???AQ). In SIVD patients, the AP diameter and IF???AQ were both significantly smaller than in controls (p < 0.001). Changes in the midbrain found for SIVD patients were similar to those seen in PSP patients. Our results suggest that the midbrain decreases in size with normal aging, especially around the tegmental region. This change is more pronounced in patients with SIVD and in patients with PSP. Prospective functional studies are needed to ascertain the clinical relevance of midbrain atrophy in SIVD.

Effect of Non Breeding Season on Oocyte Recovery from Superovulated Korean Native Goats
Yun Jin Yun,Hee Sung Park 韓國受精卵移植學會 2013 한국동물생명공학회지 Vol.28 No.1
This study assesses of efficiency of oocyte recovery and in vitro development for during the non breeding season in goat. Thirty-four matured goats, maintained in a pen under natural day length and fed hay ad libitum, were pretreated with progestagen implanted CIDR for 10 days. Superovulation treatment of the goats received twice daily intramuscular injections of a total of 70 mg FSH for 3 days from Day 8 of CIDR. All the gonadotropin treated goats were injected with 10 mg PGF2α on Day 8 and 400~600 IU hCG in the afternoon on Day 10. Oocytes were recovered by follicle aspiration or oviduct flushing at 35 to 40 h after hCG injection through mid-ventral incision. The in vivo matured oocytes were activated by ionomycin (5 min) and 6-DMAP (3.5~4 h). The activated oocytes were cultured in mSOF medium containing 0.8% BSA at 38.5℃ in an atmosphere of 5% CO2, 5% O2, 90% N2 for 7~8 days. There was no significant difference in the mean number of CL and in vivo matured and follicular oocytes recovered. But, quality of I+II grade follicular oocytes was lower (p<0.05) in the prepubertal goat (25.0%) than the adults (52.4%). The same results were also observed in the cleavage and blastocyst rate of activated oocytes. The clavage and blastocyst rate from prepubertal derived oocytes were lower (p<0.05) in the prepubertal goat (54.5%, 23.3%) than the adult goat (86.8%, 46.6%). Considering overall these results, we suggest that maturation of donor goats is a major factor affecting recovered oocytes quality and in vitro development of activated goat oocytes. There was no significant difference in oocyte quality between seasonal treatments.

The archaeon Sulfolobus solfataricus P1 carboxylesterase is a thermostable enzyme with a molecular mass of 33.5 kDa belonging to the mammalian hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) family. In our previous study, we purified the enzyme and suggested the expected amino acids related to its catalysis by chemical modification and a sequence homology search. For further validating these amino acids in this study, we modified them using site-directed mutagenesis and examined the activity of the mutant enzymes using spectrophotometric analysis and then estimated by homology modeling and fluorescence analysis. As a result, it was identified that Ser151, Asp244, and His274 consist of a catalytic triad, and Gly80, Gly81, and Ala152 compose an oxyanion hole of the enzyme. In addition, it was also determined that the cysteine residues are located near the active site or at the positions inducing any conformational changes of the enzyme by their replacement with serine residues. An activated catalyst prepared from a mixture of nickel nitrate hexahydrate with zinc in dry ethanol under reflux showed exceptional catalytic activity for the reduction of nitroarenes to the corresponding azoxy compounds exclusively in the presence of hydrazine monohydrate. However, when nickel nitrate hexahydrate was replaced by nickel chloride dihydrate with zinc, only the aminoarenes were formed in high yields. With unactivated catalyst, the reduction reaction from a mixture of nitroarenes, nickel nitrate or chloride, excess zinc and hydrazine monohydrate gave the corresponding azo, azoxy and amino compounds in much lower yields.

Cell death and survival are tightly controlled through the highly coordinated activation/inhibition of diverse signal transduction pathways to insure normal development and physiology. Imbalance between cell death and survival often leads to autoimmune diseases and cancer. Death receptors sense extracellular signals to induce caspase-mediated apoptosis. Acting upstream of CED-3 family proteases, such as caspase-3, Bcl-2 prevents apoptosis. Using short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs), we suppressed Bcl-2 expression in Jurkat T cells, and this increased TCR-triggered AICD and enhanced TNFR gene expre-ssion. Also, knockdown of Bcl-2 in Jurkat T cells suppressed the gene expression of FLIP, TNF receptor-associated factors 3 (TRAF3) and TRAF4. Furthermore, suppressed B
