      • Influence of nail color on color appearance for skin color

        Yuki Nakajima,Shuilan He,Takayoshi Fuchida 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

Nail polish (a manicure) affects the color appearance and the impression of skin color. In order to clarify the effect of nail polish and light sources on the appearance of hand skin color, the image experiment and the lighting experiment were conducted in this study. In the image experiments, we evaluated the color appearance of the illustration image of a female hand added the nail polish color on its image. As a result, the subjective color appearance of the image of a female hand was changed by the nail polish color. The yellowish skin and the reddish skin were emphasized by adding any color of nail polish. In the lighting experiments, the impression of the subject"s own skin color including nail polish under various light sources was evaluated by the semantic differential method. In the case of the light source larger than Ra80, the overall impression of skin color was affected by the nail polish color. On the other hand, the light source emphasizing more reddish or more yellowish of skin color did not have the influence of the color of nail polish, and the impression was determined by the color rendering property of the skin color itself.

Cancer Cell Cytotoxicity of Extracts and Small Phenolic Compounds from Chaga [Inonotus obliquus (persoon) Pilat]

        Yuki Nakajima,Hiroshi Nishida,Seiichi Matsugo,Tetsuya Konishi 한국식품영양과학회 2009 Journal of medicinal food Vol.12 No.3

Previously, we studied the antioxidant potential of Chaga mushroom [Inonotus obliquus (persoon) Pilat] extracts and isolated several small (poly)phenolic compounds as the major antioxidant components in the 80% methanol (MeOH) extract. In the present study, these isolated phenolic ingredients together with several other types of Chaga extracts were examined for cytotoxic effects against normal (IMR90) and cancer (A549, PA-1, U937, and HL-60) cell lines. Results revealed decoctions from both the fruiting body (FB) and sclerotium (ST) parts of Chaga, especially the ST part, showed considerable cytotoxicity toward tumor cells, but the cytotoxicity appeared to be stronger against normal cells than cancer cells. The 80% MeOH ST extract also showed the same trend. On the other hand, the 80% MeOH extract of FB showed significant cytotoxicity towards tumor cell lines without affecting normal cells, for example, the 50% lethal dose was 49.4±2.9μg/mL for PA-1 cells versus 123.6±13.8μg/mL for normal cells. The phenolic components isolated from the 80% MeOH extracts had markedly greater cancer cell toxicity than the extracts themselves. In particular, two out of seven compounds showed strong cytotoxicity towards several tumor cell lines without giving rise to significant cell toxicity toward normal cells. For example, the 50% lethal dose for 3,4-dihydroxybenzalacetone was 12.2μmol/L in PA-1 cells but was 272.8μmol/L in IMR90 cells. Fluorescence-activated cell sorting analysis further revealed these phenolic ingredients have high potentiality for apoptosis induction in PA-1 cells.

      • Influence of Cognitive and Functional Impairment on Depression among Institutional Older Residents

Yuki Yajima,Masafumi Kirino,Seu Mi Kim,Setsuko Okada,Yong Taek Kim,Kazuo Nakajima 한국노인복지학회 2002 International Journal of Welfare for the Aged Vol.7 No.-

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between cognitive and functional impairment and depression in terms of Lazarus and Folkmans theoretical perspective. We analyzed the responses of 208 older adults residing in the special elderly nursing homes and/or the health care facilities for the elderly. The results of our statistical analyses was as follows: (1) The exploratory factor analyses for two stress-appraisal scales of cognitive and functional impairment provided one-factor solution, respectively. The confirmatory factor analyses indicated the each one-factor measurement model yielded adequate indices of fit. It is evidence for their construct validity and unidimensionality. (2) Our path analytic model using structural equation modeling demonstrated that indirect effects of the cognitive and functional impairment on the depression through an increase in the stress-appraisals of their impairment. Significant direct effects of both cognitive and functional impairment on the depression were not found. These results indicate that stress-appraisals of cognitive and functional impairment play an important role in mediating the relationship between cognitive and functional impairment as a stressor, and depression as a stress response. Therefore, it is necessary to concern stress-appraisals of cognitive and functional impairment in designing and establishing an effective mental health care system for institutional older residents.

First Clinical Trial of a Newly Developed, Low Menaquinone-7, Fermented Soybean Natto in Warfarin-Dependent Patients

        Tomomi Nakajima,Yuki Taya,Takanobu Nishikawa,Yutaka Kitamura,Hideyuki Kato,Bryan J. Mathis,Yuji Hiramatsu 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.8

Bacillus subtilis fermented soybeans (natto) contain high vitamin K2 levels, mostly as menaquinone-7 (MK-7), and must be avoided by warfarin-dependent patients. This is the first report which demonstrates the characteristics and clinical relevance of a low MK-7 natto for such patients. We generated a novel, mutant B. subtilis strain TTCC2051 with short-term fermentation and reduced MK-7 production, yielding 19–24% of the normal MK-7 content. After functional assessments and a preclinical trial, 10 warfarin-dependent patients underwent a clinical trial with a 7-day ingestion test of the low MK-7 natto. Functional assessments were satisfactory, and the preclinical trial showed no increases in plasma MK-7 levels after 7 days of ingestion. In the clinical trial, 20 g/day of the low MK-7 natto significantly increased plasma MK-7 levels while 10 g/day did not. However, neither dose of low MK-7 natto changed international normalized ratio of prothrombin time (PT-INR) values in either group. The low MK-7 natto neither changed PT-INR values nor precipitated adverse events if ingested with a once-daily maximum of 20 g (46 μg of MK-7). Thus, this novel food product has potential for consumption by warfarin-dependent patients.

Safety and Efficacy of Elobixibat, an Ileal Bile Acid Transporter Inhibitor, in Elderly Patients With Chronic Idiopathic Constipation According to Administration Time: Interim Analysis of Post-marketing Surveillance

        Atsushi Nakajima,Mio Fujimaki,Yuki Arai,Kento Emori 대한소화기 기능성질환·운동학회 2022 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.28 No.3

Background/AimsElobixibat, an ileal bile acid transporter (apical sodium-dependent bile acid transporter) inhibitor, was recently launched in Japan for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation. We conducted an interim analysis of post-marketing surveillance to evaluate the safety and efficacy of elobixibat in elderly patients with chronic constipation and compared the efficacy according to administration time. MethodsSafety and efficacy outcomes were evaluated through patient interviews for 4 weeks. ResultsAdverse drug reactions (ADRs) were observed in 5.24% of the 1049 patients analyzed; diarrhea (2.19%) and abdominal pain (1.81%) were the most common. A serious ADR of death was reported in one patient (0.10%). The incidence of ADRs in the ≥ 65-year old or ≥ 75-year-old subpopulation was similar to that in the total patient population. Mean bowel movements per week significantly increased from 2.9 ± 2.5 at baseline to 5.0 ± 3.1 (P < 0.001) at Week 2 and 5.3 ± 2.6 (P < 0.001) at Week 4. The mean Bristol Stool Form Scale score significantly increased from 2.3 ± 1.4 at baseline to 3.8 ± 1.3 (P < 0.001) at Week 2 and 3.9 ± 1.1 at Week 4 (P < 0.001). Bowel movements significantly increased in the elderly population and subpopulations receiving elobixibat before breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The median time to bowel movement was 5 hours. ConclusionThe results suggested that elobixibat was well-tolerated and efficacious in elderly patients with chronic constipation and can be administered before any meals.

      • The Influence of Lighting and Drape on the Appearance of Color and Texture of Glossy and Matt Fabric

        Shuilan He,Yuki Nakajima,Takayoshi Fuchida 한국색채학회 2017 AIC 2017 Jeju Vol.2017 No.10

The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of drape, glossy/matt of fabrics on color and texture impression evaluation under the white and the chromatic light source. In the first experiment, we investigated the influence of drape, glossy/matt texture of the fabrics under the white, the red, and the blue illumination. The texture impression of the fabric was shown not affected by the drape but influenced by whether a highlight part of the fabric was present or not. The second experiment was carried out to examine the influence of illuminance of the light source on the color/texture impression of the fabric. It was clarified that a color and texture impression decreased with decrease of illuminance. A color and texture impression of the fabric under the chromatic light was also evaluated. The results showed that a color/texture impression was corresponded to luminance of the fabric surface under the chromatic light.

      • Measuzement of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living among Elderly Living in Institutional Settings

Masafumi Kirino,Yuki Yajima,Seu Mi Kim,Setsuko Okada,Yong Taek Kim,Kazuo Nakajima 한국노인복지학회 2002 International Journal of Welfare for the Aged Vol.7 No.-

The purpose of this study was to develop an IADL scale for elderly residing in health and welfare institutions with an exploratory, confirmatory and simultaneous factor analyses. Subjects were 7,251 residents of 111 special elderly nursing homes and 5,087 residents of 5 health care facilities for the elderly in Shizuoka prefecture. First, the exploratory factor analysis yield four factors: Feeding-related activities, Cleaning-related activities, Intellectual-living-related activities, and Mobility-related activities, respectively. Second, the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the model comprised of 13 items was fit to our data. Third, the simultaneous factor analysis with six groups divided by sex(male, female) and age brackets(younger-old = 65-74, older-old = 75-84, oldest-old = 85 or more) showed that the model was fit to our data in each group. These results supported validity of the IADL scale for institutional elderly. These findings are expected to provide clinically useful implications particularly in evaluating outcomes of rehabilitation and in designing care-plan adequate to the functional level of institutional elderly.
