We reviewed literatures on human brain activity on exercise. It was proved that exercise activate brain function through various equipments. Among methods to evaluate brain activation, there are Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), transcranial doppler sonography (TCD), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) methods. There were different characteries in each measurement methods to demonstrate exercise effects. NIRS is a spectroscopic method that uses the near infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. According to using brain scanning equipments involved NIRS, moderate exercise increased frontal lobe (specially prefrontal cortex) and improves cognitive performance. This review will be discussed about brain activation and cognitive functions.

Background: Sensitive skin is characterized by the occurrence of sensations of tingling, prickling, heat, burning, pain or itching and, on occasion, erythema in response to multiple physical, chemical or hormonal factors that do not have irritant properties by themselves. Objectives: This study sought to identify the proportion of sensitive skin and their charicteristics in Korean population. Methods: Representative nationwide samples of the Korean populations aged 18 and over were selected. The individuals were questioned by telephone and selected as per the quotas method. Results: Among the 1000 individuals, 55.3% of men and 59.4% of women answered “sensitive” or “very sensitive”. The difference between the 2 sexes is significant (p<0.02). The sensitive skin group are 2 to 4 times more to declare dermatosis, and are 2 or 3 times more reactive to environmental factors, cosmetics and food intake compared with the non-sensitive skin group. Conclusion: 56.8% of Korean appear to have sensitive skin. It is the highest prevalence among the countries reporting theirs. Respondents complaining of sensitive skin appeal more reactive skin to unexpected factors than those with non-sensitive skin. Dermatologists should therefore routinely question their patients’ skin sensitivity and provide them more care.

Background: Ketoconazole or zinc-pyrithione shampoos are common treatments for scalp seborrheic dermatitis. However, shampoos comprising different compounds are required to provide patients with a wider range of treatment options. Objectives: To evaluate a new-formula shampoo that contains natural ingredients, extract of Rosa centifolia petals and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), that exert antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and sebum secretion inhibitory effects, and antifungal agents for the treatment of scalp seborrheic dermatitis. Methods: Seventy-five patients were randomized into three groups: new-formula shampoo, 2% ketoconazole shampoo and 1% zinc-pyrithione shampoo. Clinical severity scores, sebum levels, user satisfaction and irritation were assessed at week 0, week 2 and week 4 after. Results: The efficacy of the new-formula shampoo was comparable to that of both the 1% zinc-pyrithione shampoo and the 2% ketoconazole shampoo. Furthermore, it was found to provide a more rapid response than the 1% zinc-pyrithione shampoo for mild erythema lesions and was associated with greater user satisfaction compared to the 2% ketoconazole shampoo. However, the new-formula shampoo did not exhibit the previously reported sebum inhibitory effect. Conclusion: Extract of Rosa centifolia petals or EGCG could be useful ingredients in treatments for scalp seborrheic dermatitis.

Background: There has been a report suggesting clinical effectiveness of phototherapy using a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser as the alternative treatment of onychomycosis, but objective evaluation of the therapeutic effect and in-depth study of the mechanism of treatment are still insufficient. The authors performed an in-vitro study of Trichophyton rubrum, a pathogen which has been attributed in more than 80% of onychomycosis, and investigated antifungal effect of 1064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Objectives: To determine whether the growth of T. rubrum is inhibited by direct irradiation of 1064nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser. Methods: T. rubrum was collected from the nails of 5 onychomycosis patients, which were irradiated with the laser 200 shots each time at intervals of 3 to 5 days for 29 days. Colony diameter was compared directly with the control group to observe the difference in growth rate. Results: The growth rate was not different between the T. rubrum colony irradiated with 1064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser and the colony not irradiated with the laser. Conclusion: In this study, the laser did not seem to have a direct effect on T. rubrum. It can be speculated that the therapeutic effect of 1064 nm long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser on onychomycosis may be attributable to tissue changes of the lesion, rather than to damaging of the fungus itself.

Background: In the dermis, fibroblasts play a critical role in maintaining homeostasis. UV triggers apoptosis and growth arrest in fibroblasts. Therefore, UV radiation is one of the major inducers of disorders of the dermis. Troxerutin is a derivative of the natural bioflavonoid. As troxerutin has been shown to have radioprotective, anti-inflam¬matory and antioxidant effects, it seems likely that troxerutin may protect cells against UV-induced oxidative stress and DNA damage. Objectives: To investigate the mechanisms by which troxerutin protects cells against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Methods: First, we demonstrate that pre-treatment with troxerutin protects normal human dermal fibroblasts (nHDFs) against UVB-induced cytotoxicity. Subsequently, we analyzed microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles in the nHDFs. Results: Troxerutin increased cell migra¬tion and DNA repair activity in the nHDFs. In UVB-exposed cells, miRNAs act on crucial functions, such as apoptosis and cellular senescence. miRNA expression is significantly altered during the protective process induced by phytochemicals. Conclusion: In this study, our findings indicate that pre-treatment with troxerutin increases the viability of UVB-exposed nHDFs through the alteration of the miRNA expression profiles.
Synthesis of nanoporous materials via recycling coal fly ash and other solid wastes: A mini review
Lee, Yu-Ri,Soe, June Thet,Zhang, Siqian,Ahn, Ji-Whan,Park, Min Bum,Ahn, Wha-Seung Elsevier 2017 Chemical engineering journal Vol.317 No.-

Abstract

Large quantities of fly ash are discharged as a by-product from coal power plants. Therefore, an effective method to recycle this waste material is necessary. In this regard, the high silica content of fly ash makes it a potential useful source for the synthesis of nanoporous materials, such as zeolites, mesoporous silica or silica aerogels. In this mini review, zeolite synthesis from fly ash was examined by considering the ash composition, pretreatment procedures, and hydrothermal synthesis conditions (substrate composition and synthesis temperature/time) to identify an optimal set of synthesis conditions. These zeolites can be used as adsorbents and ion-exchangers for environmentally hazardous materials including those present in the fly ash itself. The synthesis of mesoporous silica materials with a high surface area and large pore volume derived from fly ash was next assessed for their use as a support and as a surface-functionalized host for capturing the global warming CO2 and rare earth metal ions. Lastly, the utilization of fly ash for the preparation of silica aerogels or adiabatic foams, which are being considered as a potential building insulation materials, was briefly examined. Cases of synthesizing these nanoporous materials using other solid wastes as silica and/or alumina sources were also examined. The synthesis of diverse porous materials utilizing the waste sources would enable a high level of recycling for a sustainable society with a low environmental burden.

Highlights

Physicochemical pre-treatment of fly ash for nanoporous materials synthesis.

Synthesis of zeolites, mesoporous silica, and silica aerogel/foam from fly ash.

Synthesis of nanoporous materials using solid wastes as silica and/or alumina sources.

Applications of the synthesized nanoporous materials via fly ash recycling for sustainability.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Abstract

We prepared hyaluronic acid (HA)-based nanogels conjugated with dihydroxyflavone (DHF) and evaluated their cellular uptake and antitumoral efficiency. 4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-4-methylmorpholinium chloride (DMTMM) was used as a conjugation agent for esterification between DHF and HA as well as crosslinking among HA. The conjugations were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, UV/vis spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography. The size and Zeta-potential of the DHF/HA nanogels were reduced with an increase in the concentration of DMTMM due to the involvement of more HA molecules for the conjugation reactions. The DHF/HA nanogel with a smaller size was greatly taken up by two kinds of tumor cells (HeLa and HepG2), compared to NIH3T3. The cell viabilities were reduced to approximately 60% for HeLa and HepG2 cells after 48 h post treatment with DHF/HA nanogels.

Highlights

Hyaluronic acid molecules are conjugated among themselves in nanogel form.

Dihydroxyflavones are conjugated to hyaluronic acid nanogels.

A low concentration of a conjugation agent leads to the nanogel size reduction.

The nanogel specifically reduced the viability of tumor cells to approximately 60%.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Objectives: Many researchers in western societies raised questions on methodological Limitations of randomized controlled trial (RCT) for studying Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM), and they have tried to find alternatives to RCT. Some of them recently have interest in health service research as one of the alternatives. Discussing the significance of health services research in CAM studies will be helpful to guide the researchers in Korea who are also interested in developing an appropriate research methodology for traditional Korean medicine. Methods: Previous studies on methodological issues of studying CAM and health service researches published in western societies until 2009 were searched mainly from Pubmed. The definition, main research domains, and research methods of health service research and the significance of it for researches on CAM were summarized. Results & Conclusions: Health service researches are important in two aspects. First, health service researches evaluate the actual practice of CAM, including the individualized diagnosis as well as treatment and interaction between practitioners and patients. Second, when evaluating the outcomes, they put an emphasis on subjective evaluation by patients as well as objective evaluation by doctors. Thus, it can reflect the treatment goals of CAM which is improving the overall quality of Life and the physical and psychological health. Therefore, health services researches such as descriptive studies, qualitative studies, outcomes studies including economic evaluation, and whole systemic research should be more utilized in order for studying traditional Korean medicine.
