Abstract

This study aimed to examine the sex-specific association between serum sex hormones and gonadotropins and the cerebral beta-amyloid (Aβ) burden and hippocampal neurodegeneration in subjects with normal cognition and impaired cognition. Two hundred sixty-five older subjects received clinical assessments, serum measurements of sex hormones, gonadotropins, 11C-Pittsburgh compound B-positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In females, higher free testosterone and gonadotropin levels were associated with lower cerebral Aβ positivity. In males, free testosterone was positively related to hippocampal volume with significant interaction with cognitive status. Further subgroup analyses showed that the association was significant only in impaired cognition but not in normal cognition. Free estradiol was not associated with Aβ burden or hippocampal neurodegeneration in either sex. These results suggest that testosterone might inhibit the early pathological accumulation of Aβ in females and delay neurodegeneration in males.

We study liberals and conservatives in the United States and Korea to see how they respond to charity advertising that appeals to either equality or proportionality. The findings robustly demonstrate that in both countries, liberals respond more favorably to equality appeals, but conservatives respond more favorably to proportionality appeals. Study 1, conducted in the United States, finds that liberals find equality appeals more effective, but conservatives find proportionality appeals more effective. Study 2, conducted in Korea, shows that liberals (conservatives) estimate that they are more (less) likely to receive rewards for donating when charity advertising uses equality rather than proportionality appeals.

To study the relevance of the activation of toll-like receptor-2 and abnormal behavioral properties, we introduced prenatal zymosan, a toll-like receptor-2 ligand, to investigate the effect of maternal immunity on offspring behavior. Only female offspring showed impaired social and cognitive function, suggesting that zymosan may influence females' behavior. Copyright (C) 2016 Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved.

This research examines the impact of closing versus opening eyes on consumers’ decision making as to whether the decision context is driven by utilitarian versus hedonic motivation. The findings from three studies show that consumers processing advertising messages with their eyes closed are likely to use high-level, abstract processing, and thus more positively evaluate the utilitarian products (vs. the hedonic products). On the contrary, consumers with their eyes open are likely to use low-level, concrete processing, and thus more positively evaluate the hedonic products (vs. the utilitarian products). Implications for consumers and marketers are discussed.
Exploring the Talk in EFL Students’ Peer Feedback

Peer feedback (PF) can be an important component in teaching and learning writing. This study investigated the content of PF and students’ perspectives about PF in two EFL writing classrooms at a Korean university. The data comprise sixty-five students’ written comments and their opinion writing on PF. The findings reveal that students’ comments included mainly ‘statements’ and ‘praises’ with significant high scores. The strengths of PF were students’ ‘knowledge about concepts’ for getting ideas and recognition of their grammatical problems through peers’ work. Regarding weaknesses of PF, students felt that their peers were not qualified to revise the grammatical aspects and tended to distrust their peers’ recommendations. As an ideal type of feedback, students preferred anonymous PF to teacher feedback. These findings show the importance of choosing not only what ways of PF are effective in a given context, but what effect of the selected way might have on the improvement of students’ writing.
Intravenous fluid prescription practices among pediatric residents in Korea
Lee, Jiwon M.,Jung, Younghwa,Lee, Se Eun,Lee, Jun Ho,Kim, Kee Hyuck,Koo, Ja Wook,Park, Young Seo,Cheong, Hae Il,Ha, Il-Soo,Choi, Yong,Kang, Hee Gyung The Korean Pediatric Society 2013 Clinical and Experimental Pediatrics (CEP) Vol.56 No.7
Purpose: Recent studies have established the association between hypotonic fluids administration and hospital-acquired hyponatremia in children, and have contended that hypotonic fluids be removed from routine practice. To assess current intravenous fluid prescription practices among Korean pediatric residents and to call for updated clinical practice education Methods: A survey-based analysis was carried out. Pediatric residents at six university hospitals in Korea completed a survey consisting of four questions. Each question supposed a unique scenario in which the respondents were to prescribe either a hypotonic or an isotonic fluid for the patient. Results: Ninety-one responses were collected and analyzed. In three of the four scenarios, a significant majority prescribed the hypotonic fluids (98.9%, 85.7%, and 69.2%, respectively). Notably, 69.2% of the respondents selected the hypotonic fluids for postoperative management. Almost all (96.7%) selected the isotonic fluids for hydration therapy. Conclusion: In the given scenarios, the majority of Korean pediatric residents would prescribe a hypotonic fluid, except for initial hydration. The current state of pediatric fluid management, notably, heightens the risk of hospital-acquired hyponatremia. Updated clinical practice education on intravenous fluid prescription, therefore, is urgently required.

This study investigates three aspects of students` writing practice, namely process, focusing on self as author and discourse-based self, and samples three cultural groups being Korean, Chinese and Japanese, respectively. The data comprised of students` written texts and interviews with the twelve students. The findings showed that the Chinese students used their L1, whereas Japanese students established the longest writing process. The Korean students did not show any cultural tendencies in their writing. While all the Chinese and Japanese students expressed excitement and took pleasure in English writing, the Korean ones showed negative attitudes toward writing. This study suggests that to improve students` writing practice teachers should develop students` identities through pedagogic practices in multicultural classrooms by acknowledging students` experiences and cultural backgrounds.
