TARIFF-JUMPING DIRECT FOREIGN INVESTMENT AND OPTIMAL TARIFFS : A THREE-COUNTRY THREE-FIRM MODEL

With a three-country (one home and two foreign countries) three-firm model, this paper investigates an optimal import tariff set by a home government subject to tariff-jumping direct foreign investment (DFI) by foreign firms. It is shown that, unlike the existing two-country two-firm model, DFI occurs in equilibrium for some parameterizations of cost and demand conditions. We also show that the host country can be better off with the inflow of tariff-jumping DFI than in the benchmark case where the foreign firms are not allowed to conduct DFI and the home government can set an unconstrained optimal tariff.
TRANSFER PRICING AND DIRECT FOREGIN INVESTMENT WITH EXPROPRIATION RISK

This paper develops a game-theoretic model of direct foreign investment (DFI) in a country where the government cannot commit to refraining from expropriation of sunk investments by transnational enterprises (TNEs). In this situation, when the government lacks the necessary resources to finance the sunk costs of investment, DFI would be possible if there are self-enforcing contracts that give the investing TNE a minimum amount of the surplus generated by the project. We argue such contracts may exist if there are possibilities of transfer pricing on the part of the TNE. The particular example of transfer pricing examined here is a situation where the TNE is supposed to transfer its technology to the host country in exchange for a royalty. While transfer pricing is often seen as a negative aspect of TNE investments, our findings suggest that transfer pricing opportunities may indeed enhance DFI.

Recently, numerous studies have utilized graphene in biomedical applications such as drug delivery, cancer therapy, and bioimaging. In this study, graphene was eco-friendly prepared by liquid phase exfoliation of graphite using plant extracts in water. Initially, 12 different plants or plant parts were screened for the characteristic graphene peak at near 268 nm using UV-Vis spectrophotometric analyses. The ability to form stable black graphene dispersion was highest using Xanthium strumarium extract. Transmission electron microscopy images showed that about 5 layer-graphene was produced from 1 g/L of graphite, while more than 5 layers were formed from 2 g/L of graphite. The optimum X. strumarium concentration for graphene production was 2 g/100 mL.

본 논문은 한국 제조업을 대상으로 비용구조를 분석하고 장기비용함수와 이윤함수를 추정한 후, 추정계수를 이용하여 생산요소(노동, 자본, 중간재, 에너지)의 가격이 장기비용과 수익성에 마친 영향을 실증적으로 분석하고 있다. 분석결과 에너지가격의 장기비용증가율에 대한 기여도가 4.2%p로 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며 중간재가격은 3.7%p로 두 번째 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 에너지가 총비용 중에서 차지하는 비중이 상대적으로 미미한 수준에 그치고 있어 중간재가격 상승이 한국 제조업의 주요 비용압박요인으로 작용하고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 산업군별로는 경공업에서는 에너지가격의 변화가 비용 증가에 큰 영향을 미쳤으나 중화학공업에서는 중간재가격이 비용 증가의 가장 큰 요인으로 나타났다. 생산요소가격의 이윤증가율에 대한 기여도를 분석한 결과 에너지가격을 제외한 여타 생산요소의 가격상승은 이윤을 감소시키는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 전 기간 평균으로 볼 때 중간재가격의 증가는 이윤증가율을 44.9%p 감소시켜 이윤감소의 가장 큰 요인으로 나타났으며, 2000년 이후 -31.1%p로 이윤감소폭은 1980년대를 제외한다면 과거에 비해 둔화되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. This paper analyzes cost structure in Korean Manufacturing and estimates long-run average cost function and profit function to examine how the price of inputs(labor, capital, intermediate and energy) can affect the growth rate of long-run total cost and profit. The result shows that the contribution rates of the price of energy and intermediate to long-run total cost growth have the highest and second highest estimates, 4.2%p and 3.7%p respectively. However, considering that the share of energy in total cost is not high, the increase in the price of intermediate input results in the high-cost structure in Korean manufacturing. On the other hand, in terms of the group of industry, the change in the price of energy affects mostly to long-run cost growth in light industry while the change in the price of intermediate input affects significantly to it. The contribution rate of the price of inputs to the growth rate of profit suggests that the increased price of inputs except for energy decreases industry's profit. In particular, the price of intermediate decreases the growth rate of profit to 44.9%p for the whole period. Since 2000, the decline of profit caused by the price of intermediate input is 31.1%p, smaller than the past except for the 1980s.

본 연구에서는 음악의 감성적 특성에 주목하여, 대표적인 요소(Salient feature)들인 멜로디, 음량, 가사를 열 촉감으로 매핑하였다. 이를 활용하여 장애가 없는 사용자에게는 음악과 열을 동시에 제공하여 음악을 청-촉각으로 동시에 느낄 수 있도록 하며, 청각 장애인에게는 음악을 촉각으로 느낄 수 있도록 하는 시스템을 제작하였다. 음악 경험자를 대상으로 한 사용자 실험에서는 3 종류의 음악장르(동요, Pop, Ballad)에 대하여 렌더링한 열 촉감자극의 사용자 경험에 대하여 정량, 정성적인 설문 조사를 수행하였으며, 이를 토대로 열 촉감을 이용한 음악 요소의 렌더링 가이드라인을 수립하였다.

<P>Numerous studies have reported the use of halide perovskites as highly functional light-harvesting materials. The development of optimized compositions and deposition approaches has led to impressive improvements; however, no noticeable breakthrough in performance has been observed for these materials recently. Here, a breakthrough that enables the fabrication of vertically grown halide perovskite (VGHP) nanopillar photodetectors <I>via</I> a nanoimprinting crystallization technique is demonstrated. We used engraved nanopatterned polymer stamps to form VGHP nanopillars during the pressurized crystallization of the softly baked gel state of a methylammonium lead iodide (CH<SUB>3</SUB>NH<SUB>3</SUB>PbI<SUB>3</SUB>, denoted MAPI) film. The VGHP films exhibit much lower defect density and higher conductivity, as supported by current-voltage characteristic measurements and conductive atomic force microscopy measurements. Ultimately, two-terminal lateral photodetectors based on the VGHP nanopillar films show a greatly enhanced photoresponse compared with flat film-based photodetectors. We expect that the deposition method presented here will help surpass the technical limits and contribute to further improvements in various halide-perovskite-based devices.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
