        WORM-HUNTER: A Worm Guard System using Software-defined Networking

        Network security is rapidly developing, but so are attack methods. Network worms are one of the most widely used attack methods and have are able to propagate quickly. As an active defense approach to network worms, the honeynet technique has long been limited by the closed architecture of traditional network devices. In this paper, we propose a closed loop defense system of worms based on a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) technology, called Worm-Hunter. The flexibility of SDN in network building is introduced to structure the network infrastructures of Worm-Hunter. By using well-designed flow tables, Worm-Hunter is able to easily deploy different honeynet systems with different network structures and dynamically. When anomalous traffic is detected by the analyzer in Worm-Hunter, it can be redirected into the honeynet and then safely analyzed. Throughout the process, attackers will not be aware that they are caught, and all of the attack behavior is recorded in the system for further analysis. Finally, we verify the system via experiments. The experiments show that Worm-Hunter is able to build multiple honeynet systems on one physical platform. Meanwhile, all of the honeynet systems with the same topology operate without interference.

        Paired Preference Testing: False Preferences and Disruptive Protocols

        This review introduces recent changes regarding measurement of preferences brought about by the discovery of false preferences that occur with paired preference testing. Testing protocols are examined critically. False preferences result from a response bias elicited by factors distinct from sensory properties of products being tested that can distort results. Statistical approaches to circumventing this problem are examined. Alternative methods are being developed to eliminate false preferences based on understanding information processing in the brain. This has led to development of disruptive experimental preference testing protocols based on hypothesized use of processing subroutines in the brain to protect the central processing system from overload. These disruptive protocols suppress response bias. Paired preference testing is designed to predict consumer behavior. A paucity of studies addressing whether they do is put into perspective.

        Effects of harvest time and added molasses on nutritional content, ensiling characteristics and in vitro degradation of whole crop wheat

        Objective: Wheat is an alternative to corn silage for ruminant feeding in northern China. This study examined the effects of harvest time and added molasses on nutritional content, ensiling characteristics and in vitro degradation of whole crop wheat (WCW). Methods: Fresh WCW at the milk-ripe stage was harvested at 0700 h (i.e., in the morning [Mo]) and 1700 h (i.e., in the afternoon [Af]), and then immediately used to prepare silage and make hay. Commercial molasses was added to Af WCW at 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6% (fresh weight) proportions. The WCW treated with molasses was mixed thoroughly prior to ensiling. Results: Dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber, water soluble carbohydrate (WSC) content (p<0.01), accumulative gas production in 72 h (GP72h, 77.46 mL/g vs 95.15 mL/g) and dry matter disappearance in vitro (69.15% vs 76.77%) were lower (p<0.05), while crude protein (CP) content was higher for WCW silage (WCWS) compared to WCW (p<0.01). The propionic acid and butyric acid concentrations in WCWS from Mo WCW were 1.47% and 0.26%, respectively. However, the propionic and butyric acid concentrations were negligible, while the ammonia nitrogen/total nitrogen (NH3-N/TN, p<0.01) concentration was lower and the rate of gas production at 50% of the maximum (17.05 mL/h vs 13.94 mL/h, p<0.05) was higher for Af WCWS compared to Mo WCWS. The incubation fluid’s NH3-N concentration was lower in WCWS and Af WCW compared to Mo WCW (p<0.05). The CP and WSC content increased with increasing molasses levels (p<0.05). Furthermore, the pH (p<0.01) and time when gas production was 50% of the maximum (2.78 h vs 3.05 h, p<0.05) were lower in silage treated with 4% molasses than silage without molasses. Conclusion: Harvesting wheat crops in the afternoon and adding molasses at 4% level to WCW optimally improved ensiling characteristics, leading to well-preserved silage.

        Bending Performance of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete-filled Steel Tube Composite Beam

        A composite beam, which consists of a Lightweight Aggregate Concrete Filled Steel Tube (LACFST), and a reinforced concrete slab deck, was investigated. Bending tests were performed to study its behaviour. Based on the test results and the assumptions therein, calculation methods proposed and design suggestions were proved by finite element analysis. The results shows that the composite beam had good ductility and high bearing capacity. The design bearing capacity can be calculated using a force balance method. The flexural stiffness, at the serviceability-level, can be found by superposition of the slab deck and LACFST beam stiffness. A three-line M-δ model was proposed for the lightweight aggregate concrete steel tube composite beam moment – deflection evolution. After validation by finite element analysis, the neutral axis was suggested as lying between the top of the steel tube and the bottom of the concrete deck when the composite beam failed.

        Fatigue performance of rib-roof weld in steel bridge decks with corner braces

        To study the effects of corner braces on fatigue performance of the U-rib and roof weld in steel bridge decks, the fatigue experiment was carried out to compare characteristics of the crack shape with and without corner braces. The improvement of fatigue life and stress variation after setting corner braces were also analysed. Different parameters of corner brace sizes, arrangements, and detail types were considered in the FEM models to obtain stress distribution and variation at the weld. Furthermore, enhancement of the fatigue performance by corner braces was evaluated. The results demonstrated that the corner brace could improve the fatigue life of the U-rib and roof weld, which exerted even no influence on the crack shape. Moreover, stress of the roof weld was decreased and the crack position was transferred from the root weld to U-rib and corner brace weld. It was suggested no weld scallop should be drilled on the corner brace. A transverse rib with lower height which was set between U-ribs was favourable for improvement of fatigue performance.

        Fatigue Evaluation of Cable-stayed Bridge Steel Deck Based on Predicted Traffic Flow Growth

        Statistical analysis of the measured traffic flow over the Nanjing No. 3 Yangtze River Bridge from 2006 to 2010 was conducted. The predictions of traffic flow growth model were established. Random traffic flow was simulated by Monte-Carlo method to study dynamic impact effects under vehicle load. Considering the dynamic impact effects and wheel mark transverse distribution, the nominal stress, hot spot stress, and notch stress in the steel bridge deck details was calculated. The results of three evaluation method were compared. Suggestions of analysis models and fatigue evaluation were proposed. The study showed that the maximum magnification coefficient of the dynamic impact effects was close to the suggestion of BS5400. The simplified model could be used to analysis local stress ignoring the superimposed effects of longitudinal multi-vehicles. The evaluated service life under hot spot stress was comparatively longer. In terms of bridge safety and convenience, notch stress for the roof weld and U rib-to-diaphragm weld and hot spot stress for diaphragm arc gap were more suitable for fatigue evaluation. And the roof weld was most likely to crack.

        Naloxone Postconditioning Alleviates Rat Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury by Inhibiting JNK Activity

        To investigate the alteration of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) activity after myocardial ischemiareperfusion injury (MIRI) and further explore the effect of naloxone postconditioning on MIRI. Fortymale Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into five groups: sham operation (sham, n=8);ischemia reperfusion (IR, n=8); IR+naloxone 0.5 mg/kg (Nal L, n=8); IR+naloxone 1.0 mg/kg (Nal M,n=8); IR+naloxone 2.0 mg/kg (Nal H, n=8). Pathological changes of myocardial tissue were visualizedby HE staining. The expression of p-JNK, and the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes were investigated withWestern blotting and the TUNEL assay, respectively. Irregular arrangement and aberrant structureof myocardial fibers, cardiomyocytes with granular or vacuolar degeneration, and inflammatory cellsinfiltrating the myocardial interstitial regions characterized MIRI in the IR group. Signs of myocardialinjury and inflammatory infiltration were less prominent in the Nal-treated groups. The expressionof p-JNK in the sham group and in all Nal-treated groups was significantly lower than that in theIR group (p<0.01). The apoptosis index of cardiomyocytes in the IR group was significantly higherthan in the sham group (p< 0.01). The apoptosis indices of cardiomyocytes in all Nal-treated groupswere significantly reduced to 55.4%, 26.2%, and 27.6%, respectively, of the IR group (p< 0.01). Thisstudy revealed that Naloxone postconditioning before reperfusion inhibits p-JNK expression anddecreases cell apoptosis, thus alleviating MIRI.
