        Broad-specificity amino acid racemase, a novel non-antibiotic selectable marker for transgenic plants

        The broad-specificity amino acid racemase (Bsar) from Pseudomonas putida catalyzes the racemization of various amino acids, offering a flexible and feasible platform to develop a new non-antibiotic selectable marker system for plant transformation. In the present study, we demonstrated that a Bsar variant, Bsar-R174K, that is useful as a selectable marker gene in Arabidopsis and rice that were susceptible to l-lysine and D-alanine. The introduction of wild-type Bsar, Bsar-R174K or Bsar-R174A into E. coli lysine or asparagine auxotrophs was able to rescue the growth of these microorganisms in minimal media supplemented with selectable amino acid enantiomers. The transformation of Arabidopsis with Bsar or Bsar variants based on d-alanine selection revealed that Bsar-R174K had the greatest efficiency (2.40%), superior to kanamycin selectionbased transformation (1.10%). Whereas, l-lysine-based selection exhibited lower efficiency for Bsar-R174K (0.17%). The progenies of selected Bsar-R174K transgenic Arabidopsis revealed normal growth properties. In addition, Bsar-R174K transgenic rice was obtained on l-lysine medium with an efficiency of 0.9%, and the progenies of the transgenic rice revealed morphologically normal phenotypes comparable with their wild-type counterparts. This study presents the first report of broad range amino acid racemase Bsar-R174K as a non-antibiotic selectable marker system applied in transgenic plants.

        Effect of Country Distance on E-commerce Export: Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Entrepreneurship

        Purpose - This study examines the role of e-commerce resulting from technological innovation as a new approach toward internationalization. We study the relationship between e-commerce export and country distance, measured in CAGE distance, which has hindered traditional internationalization. As a control variable, entrepreneurship was introduced to check the moderating effect on the relationship between country distance and e-commerce export. Design/methodology - Based on empirical analysis, e-commerce exports from the Republic of Korea to 96 countries were used as dependent variables. First, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to test the hypothesis about each country s distance, measured by CAGE distance, and each dimension of CAGE, on e-commerce exports. Next, the hypothesis was tested through the interaction term to examine the moderating effect of entrepreneurship. Findings - The analysis showed that the hypothesis, which postulated e-commerce exports as affected negatively by the country s distance, was supported but not that all CAGE dimensions affected it. Specifically, geographical distance and economic distance have negative effects, but cultural distance and administrative distance did not affect e-commerce exports. Thus, in contrast to the expectation that distance restrictions in e-commerce would not exist, this study confirmed that distance still matters to internationalization and that entrepreneurship can mitigate the adverse effects. Originality/value - Through these results, when export firms try to enter new markets and start internationalization through e-commerce, the entrepreneurship of the importing country should be considered.

        Bactericidal Activity of Soymilk Fermentation Broth by In Vitro and Animal Models

        Soybean fermentation broth (SFB) exhibits potent antibacterial activity against different species of bacteria in in vitro assays and animal models. Four isoflavone compounds—daidzin, genistin, genistein, and daidzein—of SFB were analyzed and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. In the in vitro test, daidzin and daidzein had more potent antibacterial activity than genistin. The minimum inhibition concentration values for these bacteria of SFB ranged from 1.25%to 5%, and the minimum bactericidal concentration values of strains ranged from 2.5% to 10%, depending on the species or strain. Vancomycin-resistant Entercoccus faecalis (VRE) strains were also tested for susceptibility to SFB in two species of animal model: the Sprague–Dawley rat and the BALB/c mouse. SFB-fed Sprague–Dawley rats showed excellent elimination efficiency against VRE, close to 99% compared with the phosphate-buffered saline–fed control group. In the BALB/c mouse model, SFB antibacterial activity was 65–80% against VRE compared with the control. In conclusion, SFB contains natural antibacterial substances such as daidzin, genistin, and daidzein that inhibit bacterial growth.

      • Social Identity at Work : Interpreter’s Grammatical Choices and Interpersonal Alignment

        This study explores the role Chinese government in-house interpreters have played at several high-level annual press conferences hosted by the Chinese government. By analyzing their interpreting choices for elements of MOOD, defined in the Systemic Functional Linguistic as a discourse analysis tool and using data from a self-built corpus consisting of multiple video clips of the events, this study has discovered that the interpreters realise a level of interpersonal alignment with only one party in interpreter-mediated communication, and that the choices of alignment are heavily affected by the interpreter’s evaluation of the power relationship. The findings also suggest that although greatly constrained by their institutional roles, these interpreters remain as linguistic professionals. However, their grammatical choices demonstrate a tendency of their shifting social positions between the speaker and the addressees, betraying their deliberate efforts in embracing two roles in interpreting for the press conferences - one as inseparable part of the institution with allegiance pledged to the government, and the other as individual interpreters adhering to the norms of the profession.

        On-chip capacitive sensing and tilting motion estimation of a micro-stage for <i>in situ</i> MEMS gyroscope calibration

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, we introduce a novel on-chip capacitive sensor design and a motion estimation method for measuring multi-axis out-of-plane tilting motion of a micro-stage that is used for <I>in situ</I> calibration of an integrated MEMS gyroscope. On-chip sensing and motion estimation is critical for this application, since precision in measuring high frequency tilting motion of the micro-stage determines how accurately an on-stage MEMS gyroscope can be calibrated in the field with respect to this motion. To obtain decoupled sensing signals from multi-axis out-of-plane tilting motion, a capacitive sensing layout with high off-axis signal rejection capability is introduced. With the proposed design specifications and range of tilting motion, a dual axis capacitive sensor model is developed, and simulation results show that the sensor is able to reject more than 99.90% of the off-axis signal. The sensor also permits detection of perturbations to stage geometry due to ambient temperature variation through the effects of nonlinear behavior on signal timing. To measure tilting motion with the obtained sensing signal, a motion estimator with extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is also developed. With assistance of a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV), experiments are performed to identify the parameters of the motion estimator and validate its performance. The experimental results demonstrate a 286 ppm error in scale factor calibration of a commercial MEMS gyroscope by the micro-stage with moderate temperature variation.</P>

        A Beacon-Based Trust Management System for Enhancing User Centric Location Privacy in VANETs

        In recent years, more and more researches have been focusing on trust management of vehicle ad-hoc networks (VANETs)for improving the safety of vehicles. However, in these researches,little attention has been paid to the location privacy due to the natural conflict between trust and anonymity, which is the basic protection of privacy. Although traffic safety remains the most crucial issue in VANETs, location privacy can be just as important for drivers, and neither can be ignored. In this paper, we propose a beacon-based trust management system, called BTM, that aims to thwart internal attackers from sending false messages in privacy-enhanced VANETs. To evaluate the reliability and performance of the proposed system, we conducted a set of simulations under alteration attacks, bogus message attacks, and message suppression attacks. The simulation results show that the proposed system is highly resilient to adversarial attacks, whether it is under a fixed silent period or random silent period location privacyenhancement scheme.

        GreenIoT Architecture for Internet of Things Applications

        A power-saving mechanism for smartphone devices is developed by analyzing the features of data that are received from Internet of Things (IoT) sensors devices to optimize the data processing policies. In the proposed GreenIoT architecture for power-saving in IoT, the power saving and feedback mechanism are implemented in the IoT middleware. When the GreenIoT application in the power-saving IoT architecture is launched, IoT devices collect the sensor data and send them to the middleware. After the scanning module in the IoT middleware has received the data, the data are analyzed by a feature evaluation module and a threshold analysis module. Based on the analytical results, the policy decision module processes the data in the device or in the cloud computing environment. The feedback mechanism then records the power consumed and, based on the history of these records, dynamically adjusts the threshold value to increase accuracy. Two smart living applications, a biomedical application and a smart building application, are proposed. Comparisons of data processed in the cloud computing environment show that the power-saving mechanism with IoT architecture reduces the power consumed by these applications by 24% and 9.2%.

      • The Effect of Beta-Herding on Taiwan’s Market: DCC-MIDAS Approach

        The aim of this study is to investigate the herding of beta transmission between return and volatility. We have used the dynamic conditional correlation model with the mixed-data sampling (DCC-MIDAS) model for the analysis. Evidence demonstrates that herding is a key transmitter in Taiwan’s stock market. The significant estimation of DCC-MIDAS explains the herding phenomenon is highly dynamic and time-varying in herding behavior. By means of time-varying beta of herding based on our rolling forecasting method and robustness check of the Markov switching regression approach using four types of portfolios, we find evidence of superior forecasting ability of the model indicates that there are conditional correlations between betas and herding. The evidence also reveals herding formation in Taiwan’s markets during the subprime crisis period.
