        Embedded Declaratives in Korean

        Jae-Il Yeom. 2018. Embedded Declaratives in Korean. Language and Information, 22.1, 1 -27. This paper deals with three verbs that take a declarative clause. The verb al ‘know’ takes a ko-phrase, which is non-factive, and a kes-phrase, which describes a fact. The verb mit ‘believe’ also takes both, but a kes-phrase taken by the verb denotes a proposition. The verb sayngkakha ‘think’ takes a ko-phrase, but not a kes-phrase. I claim that a ko-phrase is a predicate which reflects what is in the mind of the subject. A kes-phrase expresses something that exists independently of the epistemic process. It can be a fact or a proposition that is given. If a kes-phrase is selected by al, it denotes a fact and if a kes-phrase is selected by mit, it denotes a proposition. sayngkakha only expresses an epistemic state, and it does not take a kes-phrase. I also discuss an adnominal declarative clause as part of a kes-phrase.

        <P>Although activation of mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPKs) by Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with induction of host angiogenesis, which may contribute to H pylori associated gastric carcinogenesis, the strategy for its prevention has not been identified. As we previously reported a strong inhibitory action of gastric proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on MAPK extracellular signal regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 phosphorylation, we investigated whether PPIs could suppress the H pylori induced angiogenesis via inhibition of MAPK ERK1/2.</P>

        정치 이데올로기의 배제를 위해 선택한 ‘생활자’의 지향점 - 염상섭의 「離合」과 「再會」를 중심으로 -

        염상섭은 여러 연구자들에 의해 비교적 연구가 많이 된 작가다. 그럼에도 불구하고 그의 해방 후 소설에 대한 연구는 해방 전 소설에 비해 소설적 완성도가 떨어진다는 이유로 상대적으로 연구가 덜 된 편이다. 하지만 그의 해방 후 소설에 대한 연구는 김재용과 최현식에 의해 재평가 되면서 이후 다양한 시각에서 새롭게 소설을 평가하려는 시도가 나타난다. 본고 역시 그와 같은 시각의 연장선상에서 해방 후 염상섭 소설을 생활자의 시각에서 살피려 한다. 해방 후 나타난 정치 이데올로기의 극심한 대립 상황에서 이를 벗어나 생활자로서 살아간다는 것의 의미를 염상섭이 어떻게 찾으려 했는지 분석하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 이를 위해 해방 후 문단의 상황과 염상섭의 그 당시 발표 글들을 통해 그가 지향했던 바가 무엇이고 이를 어떻게 소설로 형상화하고 있는지 분석하려 한다. 이를 통해 염상섭이 소설에서 지속적으로 강조해온 생활의 의미를 해방 후 어떻게 소설 속 인물로 드러내고, 이 드러냄이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지 「이합」과 「재회」 연작의 분석을 통해 밝히고자 한다. 염상섭은 해방 후 1년여에 걸친 귀향의 과정에서 여러 일들을 겪게 된다. 재만기 여러 이유로 창작을 하지 않던 그에게 해방 후 귀향 체험은 이후 소설로 형상화된다. 염상섭은 해방 후 신문학이 남북 정치 이데올로기를 벗어나 문학의 도를 찾는 것이라 본다. 그에게 올바른 문학자는 문학의 도를 찾아 진실된 생활을 그려내는 것이다. 이런 진실된 생활을 하는 생활자의 모습은 「이합」과 「재회」 연작의 주인공 장한을 통해 드러난다. 그는 해방 후 북조선에 머무르다 신숙과의 갈등으로 인해 남조선으로 넘어와 생활의 안정을 찾는다. 염상섭은 정치 이데올로기로 인한 가정 파탄을 생활자의 생활 안정을 통해 극복하고자 한다. 장한이 소설 속 생활자로 기능하게 되면서 가정은 다시 회복되고 신숙과 화해는 가능해진다. 이는 염상섭이 당대 정치 이데올로기의 대립으로 인해 발생된 혼란스러운 상황을 극복하는 새로운 문학창작 방향을 진실된 생활에서 찾은 것이라 할 수 있다. 그의 이 같은 소설 창작 방향성은 향후 다른 작품들에 드러난 생활자의 모습을 통해 지속된다. Yeom Sang-seop is a relatively researched writer by various researchers. Nevertheless, his research on post-liberation novels has been relatively less studied because of the lack of fiction completion compared to pre-liberation novels. However, Since being reevaluated by Kim Jae-yong and Choi Hyun-sik, research on Yeom Sang-seop’s post-liberation novel has emerged from various perspectives. As an extension of this perspective, this study also seeks to examine Yeom Sang-seop’s post-liberation novel from the perspective of a “living person”. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Yeom Sang-seop tried to find the meaning of “living” out of the severe confrontation of political ideology that emerged after liberation. To this end, I would like to analyze the situation of the post-liberation paragraph and Yeom Sang-seop’s presentations at the time and how he is shaping it into a novel. Through this, we will reveal how Yeom Sang-seop reveals the meaning of life, which he has consistently emphasized in the novel, as a person in the novel after liberation. In addition, the characteristics of the characters in the novel shall be revealed through the analysis of the series of “Separation” and “Reunion” Yeom Sang-seop experienced many things during his one-year journey home after liberation. He did not engage in any literary activities while living in Manchuria, and various experiences after liberation are embodied in various works of fiction. However, Looking at his writings in various magazines during this period, he argues that literature should deviate from political ideology after liberation. Yeom Sang-seop experienced many things during his return home for more than a year after liberation. When he was living in Manchuria, he did not create his own music, but his experience of returning home after liberation was later portrayed as a novel. Yeom Sang-seop believes that after liberation, new literature should move away from inter-Korean political ideology and find its way out. For him, the right writer is to find the purpose of literature and portray the true life. This true life of a living person is revealed through Jang Han, the main character of the series of “Separation” and “Reunion”. Jang Han stayed in North Korea after liberation and moved to South Korea due to conflicts with Shin Sook to find stability in his life. Yeom Sang-seop tries to overcome the family breakdown caused by political ideology through the stabilization of the living. As Jang Han functions as a living person in the novel, the family recovers. This can be said that Yeom Sang-seop found a new direction for literary creation in his true life to overcome the chaotic situation caused by the confrontation of political ideologies of the time. His direction of creation of the novel will continue through the appearance of a living person revealed in other works in the future.

        PHC 파일 원커팅 두부정리 자동화 로봇의 기술적 타당성 및 현장 적용성 분석

        선행연구(Yeom, 2018)에서는 PHC 파일 두부정리 작업의 문제점을 인지하고 PHC 파일 두부정리 작업의 전 과정을 노무자의 투입 없이 수행할 수 있도록 하는 All-in-one 어태치먼트 기반 PHC 파일 원커팅 두부정리 자동화 로봇의 프로토타입을 개발하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 선행연구(Yeom, 2018)를 통해 개발된 프로토타입의 개선요구사항을 반영하여 최종 프로토타입을 개발하고, 개발된 최종 프로토타입에 대한 설문조사 기반의 기술적 타당성 분석, 현장 적용성 분석을 수행하는 것이다. 최종 프로토타입에 대한 기술적 타당성 분석 결과, PHC 파일 절단 위치 센싱부에서 89.9%, PHC 파일 절단부에서 74.2%, PHC 파일 핸들링부에서 82.8%의 응답자가 기술적 타당성에 대해 높게 평가하였으며, 작업 안전성 측면에서 81.8%, 작업 생산성 측면에서 66.6%, 작업 편의성 측면에서 90.9%, 절단면 품질 측면에서 72.7%의 응답자가 재래식 방식 대비 해당 측면의 향상 효과를 우수하게 평가하였다. 본 연구 결과에 기대어 볼 때 추후 본 연구를 통해 개발된 All-in-one 어태치먼트 기반 PHC 파일 원커팅 두부정리 자동화 로봇이 실제 현장에 적용될 경우 그 파급효과가 매우 우수할 것으로 기대된다. Conventional method of PHC pile head cutting work has several challenges with regard to safety, convenience, productivity, and quality. To address such problems, a prototype of the all-in-one attachment-based PHC pile cutting robot is developed(Yeom, 2018). The Primary objective of this study are to develop a final prototype of all-in-one attachment-based PHC pile cutting robot and to analyze technical feasibility and field applicability of final prototype. According to the technical feasibility and field applicability analysis result, at least 74.2% of the respondents are selected positive answer about technical feasibility of the final prototype, at least 66.6% of the respondents are selected positive answer about field applicability of the final prototype. It is expected that when deployed onsite, the final prototype can not only increase the practical use but also improvement the work safety and productivity of work at the PHC pile head cutting job site.

        NtrC-Sensed Nitrogen Availability Is Important for Oxidative Stress Defense in Pseudomonas putida KT2440

        The zwf, which encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, is repressed by NtrC under nitrogen-limited condition. Previously, we demonstrated that induction of zwf-1 is required for protecting Pseudomonas putida cells under oxidative stress, which could be possible probably because of derepression of HexR on the zwf-1 gene under oxidative stress. These findings led us investigate that NtrC still represses the zwf-1 under nitrogen-limited oxidative stress condition, which makes cells more sensitive under such condition. Interestingly, deletion of the ntrC gene significantly reduces growth rate, but renders cells more resistant to oxidative stress, under nitrogen limited condition in P. putida. More vitality of the ntrC mutant under oxidative stress condition was also confirmed by the fluorogenic redox dye using flow cytometry. The results of transcriptome analysis demonstrated that the derepression of several oxidative stress genes along with the zwf-1 gene might confer high resistance to oxidative stress in the ntrC mutant. Here, we presented the data for the first time, showing that different sets of genes are involved in nitrogen-rich and nitrogen-limited oxidative stress conditions and NtrC-sensed nitrogen availability is one of the most important prerequisite for full cellular defense against oxidative stress in P. putida.
