Is the relationship between periodontitis and hyperlipidemia mediated by lipoprotein-associated inflammatory mediators?

Özlem Fentoğlu,Memduha Tözüm Bulut,Burak Doğan,Fatma Yeşim Kırzıoğlu,Esra Sinem Kemer Doğan 대한치주과학회 2020 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.50 No.3

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the serum levels of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL), anti-oxLDL, and myeloperoxidase (MPO) in hyperlipidemic patients with periodontal disease. Methods: This study included 123 patients with hyperlipidemia categorized based on metabolic control as mild to moderate (H1) (n=66) or poor (H2) (n=57), as well as systemically healthy controls (C) (n=68). Serum levels of lipids, oxLDL, anti-oxLDL, and MPO were evaluated, along with clinical periodontal parameters. Results: The percentage of bleeding on probing (BOP%) and the clinical attachment level were significantly higher in the H2 group than in the C group. Patients with hyperlipidemia had a relatively high risk of developing periodontal disease. The oxLDL and anti-oxLDL levels were higher in H2 patients with periodontitis than in the control or H1 patients with periodontitis. In the H1 and H2 groups, the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein was significantly correlated with gingival index, BOP%, and oxLDL levels. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that the lipoprotein-associated inflammatory mediators of oxLDL, anti-oxLDL, and MPO may play an important role in the relationship between periodontal disease and hyperlipidemia.

Red Cell Distribution Width: A Novel Marker of Activity in Infl ammatory Bowel Disease

2011 Gut and Liver Vol.5 No.4

Background/Aims: Studies concerning red cell distribution width (RDW) for use in the assessment of infl ammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity are limited. We investigated whether RDW is a marker of active disease in patients with IBD. Methods: In total, 61 patients with ulcerative colitis (UC)and 56 patients with Crohn’s disease (CD) were enrolled in the study group, and 44 age- and-sex-matched healthy volunteers were included as the control group. A CD activity index >150 in patients with CD indicated active disease. Patients with moderate and severe disease based on the Truelove-Witts criteria were considered to have active UC. In addition to RDW, serum C-reactive protein levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rates, and platelet counts were measured. Results: Twenty-nine (51.7%) patients with CD and 35 (57.4%)patients with UC had active disease. The RDW was significantly higher in patients with CD and UC than in controls (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). A subgroup analysis indicated that for a RDW cut-off of 14%, the sensitivity for detecting active CD was 79%, and the specicity was 93% (area under curve [AUC], 0.935; p<0.001). RDW was the most sensitive and specifi c marker for active CD. However, it was not valid for UC, as the ESR at a cutoff of 15.5 mm/hr showed a sensitivity of 83% and a specicity of 76% (AUC, 0.817;p<0.001), whereas the RDW at a cutoff of 14% showed 17%sensitivity and 84% specicity for detecting active UC. Conclusions:RDW was elevated in IBD in comparison with healthy controls and increased markedly in active disease. RDW may be a sensitive and specifi c marker for determining active CD,whereas ESR is an important marker of active UC.

High-fat Diet Enhances Gastric Contractility, but Abolishes Nesfatin-1-induced Inhibition of Gastric Emptying

        ( Zarife N Özdemir-kumral ),( Türkan Koyuncuoğlu ),( Sevil Arabacı-tamer ),( Özlem T Çilingir-kaya ),( Ayça K Köroğlu ),( Meral Yüksel ),( Berrak Ç Yeğen ) 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2021 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.27 No.2

Background/Aims Gastrointestinal motility changes contribute to development and maintenance of obesity. Nesfatin-1 (NES-1) is involved in central appetite control. The aim is to elucidate effects of NES-1 and high-fat diet (HFD) on gastrointestinal motility and to explore myenteric neuron expressions of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in HFD-induced oxidative injury. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with normal diet (ND) or HFD. Gastric emptying rate was measured following NES-1 (5 pmol/rat, intracerebroventricular) preceded by subcutaneous injections of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), cholecystokinin 1 (CCK-1), and gastrin/CCK-2 receptor antagonists. In carbachol-contracted gastric and ileal strips, contractile changes were recorded by adding NES- 1 (0.3 nmol/L), GLP-1, CCK-1, and gastrin/CCK-2 antagonists. Results Neither HFD nor NES-1 changed methylcellulose emptying, but NES-1 delayed saline emptying in cannulated ND-rats. Inhibitory effect of NES-1 on gastric emptying in ND-rats was reversed by all antagonists, and abolished in HFD-rats. In HFD-rats, carbachol-induced contractility was enhanced in gastric, but inhibited in ileal strips. HFD increased body weight, while serum triglycerides, alanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, glucose, and levels of malondialdehyde, glutathione, myeloperoxidase activity, and luminol-chemiluminescence in hepatic, ileal, and adipose tissues were similar in ND- and HFD-rats, but only lucigenin-chemiluminescence was increased in HFD-rats. Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and TH immunoreactivities were depressed and nNOS immunoreactivity was increased in gastric tissues of HFD-rats, while VIP and TH were enhanced, but nNOS was reduced in their intestines. Conclusions HFD caused mild systemic inflammation, disrupted enteric innervation, enhanced gastric contractility, inhibited ileal contractility, and eliminated inhibitory effect of NES-1 on gastric motility. The role of serum lipoxin A4 levels in the association between periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome

Esra Sinem Kemer Doğan,Burak Doğan,Özlem Fentoğlu,Fatma Yeşim Kırzıoğlu 대한치주과학회 2019 Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science Vol.49 No.2

Purpose: An unresolved inflammatory state contributes to the pathogenesis of periodontal disease and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of lipoxin A4 (LXA4), a proresolving lipid mediator, in the association between periodontal disease and MetS. Methods: Sixty-seven patients with MetS and 65 patients without MetS were included in the study. Sociodemographic information was obtained via a questionnaire, and detailed medical diagnoses were made. Periodontal parameters (plaque index [PI], gingival index [GI], probing pocket depth [PD], and clinical attachment level [CAL]) and metabolic parameters were measured, and serum LXA4 levels were determined. The associations among MetS, periodontal parameters, and serum LX levels were evaluated by adjusted multivariate linear regression analyses. Results: Patients with MetS were older and had a higher body mass index than patients without MetS. Periodontal parameters (PI, GI, PD, and CAL) were higher in patients with MetS than in those without MetS. Serum LXA4 levels were higher in patients without MetS. Multivariate linear regression analysis indicated a positive association between MetS and periodontal parameters (PD and CAL). Negative associations were established between MetS and LXA4 levels, and between LXA4 and periodontal parameters (PI, PD, and CAL). Conclusions: The presence of higher values of periodontal parameters in patients with MetS and the negative relationship of LXA4 with MetS and periodontal disease may support the protective role of proresolving lipid mediators in the association between periodontal disease and MetS.

Molecular Evaluation and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing of Escherichia coli Isolates from Food Products in Turkey

Emmanuel Owusu Kyere,Ece Bulut,M. Dilek Avşaroğlu,Yeşim Soyer 한국식품과학회 2015 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.24 No.3

Some strains of Escherichia coli can be important food borne pathogens. Characterization and antimicrobial resistance testing of 28 E. coli isolates from random food samples obtained in Van, Turkey were performed. Primers for 6 indicator genes (fliC, stx1, stx2, eae, hlyA, and rfbE) for shiga toxin-producing E. coli and 5 indicator genes for each pathogroup (bfpA, aggR, ipaH, daaD, st, and lt) were used. E. coli isolates were also typed using pulsed field gel electrophoresis with the XbaI restriction enzyme. Antimicrobial susceptibility of E. coli isolates was determined using the disk diffusion method for 17 antimicrobials. E. coli isolates were non-pathogenic strains represented by 25 distinguishable PFGE patterns. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that more than 40% of the E. coli isolates showed resistance to ampicillin, sulphafurazole, and tetracycline. Antimicrobial susceptibility of commensal E. coli should be monitored because these bacteria are becoming reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes.

      • A Preliminary Study on Urban Pollution and Modern Shanghai Society

Lu, Ye East-Asian Society for Urban History 2020 Journal of east-asian urban history Vol.2 No.1

Urban pollution has been a problem in China since ancient times. In modern times, pollution was aggravated by industrialization and urbanization and became closely related to people's lives. Shanghai was the industrial center and the most urbanized place of modern China. As a price, it needed to face extremely serious urban pollution, and the treatment of this problem involved all aspects of social life. Noise pollution let foreigners to interpret the Chinese people and the city of Shanghai from a cultural perspective, and let Chinese residents to understand Shanghai and the nation from a civilized perspective. Pollution regulation made Shanghai the first city in modern China to implement overall pollution control and levy environmental protection fees. It also enabled the Chinese to gradually fight for their rights in urban governance. Urban pollution also brought business opportunities; in the highly commercial city of Shanghai, it promoted the development of some industries. The experience of urban pollution and its treatment prompted the people of Shanghai to rethink and re-recognize modern civilization, and also promoted the formation of Shanghai urban community.

      • Secure DNP3 Services Scheme in Smart Grid Link Layer Based on GCM-AES

Ye Lu,Tao Feng,Guohua Ma 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.10 No.8

This paper defines a new DNP3 link layer frame structure based on the link layer packet characteristics of transmission time requirements and security requirements in substation automation system (SAS). The new frame structure can provide three different work modes: authentication, authorization-encryption, non-authenticated encryption. Then we propose a link-layer security service mechanism in substation automation system based on the GCM-AES, including the session key agreement protocol based on EKE, GMAC-based message authentication protocol, GCM-AES Authentication Encryption-based DNP3 protocol and GCM-AES-based message transform algorithm. Through experimental calculation and analysis, the results show that the new security mechanisms achieve the efficient and safety in substation packets transmission.

Piezo-activated guided wave propagation and interaction with damage in tubular structures

        Lu, Ye,Ye, Lin,Wang, Dong,Zhou, Limin,Cheng, Li Techno-Press 2010 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.6 No.7

This study investigated propagation characteristics of piezo-activated guided waves in an aluminium rectangular-section tube for the purpose of damage identification. Changes in propagating velocity and amplitude of the first wave packet in acquired signals were observed in the frequency range from 50 to 250 kHz. The difference in guided wave propagation between rectangular- and circular-section tubes was examined using finite element simulation, demonstrating a great challenge in interpretation of guided wave signals in rectangular-section tubes. An active sensor network, consisting of nine PZT elements bonded on different surfaces of the tube, was configured to collect the wave signals scattered from through-thickness holes of different diameters. It was found that guided waves were capable of propagating across the sharp tube curvatures while retaining sensitivity to damage, even that not located on the surfaces where actuators/sensors were attached. Signal correlation between the intact and damaged structures was evaluated with the assistance of a concept of digital damage fingerprints (DDFs). The probability of the presence of damage on the unfolded tube surface was thus obtained, by which means the position of damage was identified with good accuracy.
