Comparison of the Effects of Electroacupuncture and Melatonin on Nerve Regeneration in Experimentally Nerve-Damaged Rats

        Yasemin Özkan,Mehmet Turgut,Yasemin Turan,Mehmet Dinçer Bilgin,Sinem Sari,Mustafa Yilmaz,Yiğit Uyanikgil,Mahmut Alp Kiliç,Derya Tanriöver,Zehra Seznur Kasar 사단법인약침학회 2021 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.14 No.5

Background: Development of methods to accelerate nerve regeneration in peripheral nerve damage is important. Electroacupuncture is a new therapeutic method that combines traditional acupuncture with modern electrotherapy. Melatonin has been shown to reduce nerve damage. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to determine and compare the therapeutic effects of electroacupuncture and melatonin on rat sciatic nerve injury. Methods: A total of 56 adult male Wistar Albino rats were divided into four study groups with 14 animals in each group: intact control (group I), subcutaneous saline (group II), subcutaneous melatonin (group III), and electroacupuncture (group IV). Surgical procedure including unilateral (right) sciatic nerve injury was applied to groups II, III, and IV. Saline and melatonin started immediately after surgery for six weeks, while electroacupuncture was given two weeks after surgery for 3 weeks. Functional and histological assessments were used as outcome measurements. Results: Sciatic nerve damage caused a significant decrease in nerve conduction velocity. Both electroacupuncture treatment and melatonin treatment significantly increased the nerve conduction velocity. Both sciatic functional recovery and histological regeneration were faster in these treatment groups compared to the saline. However, no significant difference was observed between the two treatment groups. Conclusion: Electroacupuncture and melatonin are promising alternative treatment strategies for peripheral nerve damage and can be examined in detail in future studies.

On (1-u2) -cyclic codes over F₂k +uF₂k +u²F₂k

Yasemin Cengellenmis 장전수학회 2009 Proceedings of the Jangjeon mathematical society Vol.12 No.3

It is extended a result of [3] to codes over the commutative ring F₂k + uF₂k + u²F₂k where k ∈ N and u₃ = 0. A new Gray map between codes over F₂k + uF₂k + u²F₂k and F₂k is dened. It is proved that the Gray image of the linear (1 - u²)-cyclic code over the commutative ring F₂k +uF₂k +u²F₂k of length n is a distance-invariant quasicyclic code of index 2²k-1 and the length 2²kn over F₂k .

Crystallization behavior and properties of cordierite glassceramics with added boron oxide

Yasemin Demirci,Esin Günay 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2011 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.12 No.3

The glass forming behavior and glass-ceramic formation of cordierite compositions in the MAS (MgO-Al2O3-SiO2) system with an added B2O3 content up to 3% were studied using glass samples prepared by melting the natural raw materials such as;talc, kaolin, alumina and boric acid as the source of MgO, SiO2, Al2O3 and B2O3. XRD (X-Ray powder diffraction) analysis revealed glass formation and after heat treatment at various temperatures, the crystallization of the cordierite phase was observed at 950 oC for a 1 h heat treatment. Some physical properties, such as the hardness and thermal expansion coefficient of glass and glass-ceramics were measured and compared in order to see the effect of crystallization. Surface crystallization was observed and the addition of boron oxide reduced the crystalline surface layer thicknesses. The main crystalline phase was cordierite and a small amount of forsterite was also observed in MAS glass-ceramics.

A Characterization of the Codes over Fp

Yasemin Cengellenmis 장전수학회 2010 Advanced Studies in Contemporary Mathematics Vol.20 No.1

A new Gray map between codes over Fp+uFp+u2Fp+u3Fp and codes over Fp is de¯ned. It is proved that the Gray image of the linear (1 - u3)-cyclic code over the commutative ring Fp + uFp + u2Fp + u3Fp of length n is a distance invariant quasicyclic code of index p2 and the length p3n over Fp. And it is proved that if (n,p) = 1, then every code over Fp which is the Gray image of a linear cyclic code over Fp + uFp + u2Fp + u3Fp of length n is permutation equivalent to a quasi-cyclic code of index p2.

Microstructural, optical and electrical studies on sol gel derived ZnO and ZnO:Al films

        Yasemin Caglar,Müjdat Caglar,Saliha Ilican 한국물리학회 2012 Current Applied Physics Vol.12 No.3

ZnO and ZnO:Al films were deposited onto glass substrates by the sol gel method using spin coating technique. The effects of aluminum dopant on the crystalline structure and orientation of the ZnO films have been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) study. Surface morphology of the films has also been analyzed by a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). The average optical transmittance values of all the films is over >83% in the visible region. The optical band gap and Urbach energy values of these films were determined. The absorption edge shifted to the lower energy depending on the Al doping level. The shift of absorption edge is associated with shrinkage effect. The electrical conductivity of the ZnO film enhanced with the Al dopant. From the temperature dependence of conductivity measurements, the activation energy of the films was also calculated. Effect of Processing Techniques on Antioxidative Enzyme Activities, Antioxidant Capacity, Phenolic Compounds, and Fatty Acids of Table Olives

        Yasemin Sahan,Asuman Cansev,Hatice Gulen 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.3

In this study, olive fruits (Olea europeae cv. Gemlik) of the most common sources of table olives in Turkey were used. Total polyphenol content (TPC),antioxidant capacity (AC), and antioxidant enzymes (catalase, CAT; ascorbate peroxidase, APX; and glutathione reductase, GR) of table olives were compared by 4different methods of ripe table olive processing. Results revealed that TPC of the processed olives ranged from 117.44 to 418.69 mg gallic acid equivalents/g fresh weight (f.w.). The highest AC as mg Trolox equivalents of 189.58/g f.w. was obtained from unprocessed black olives. CAT,APX, and GR activities of unprocessed olives were higher than those obtained in all processed olives. In conclusion,TPC, AC, and antioxidant enzyme activities are strongly affected by fruit ripening and processing in table olives of ‘Gemlik’ cultivar. In addition, the best processing technique is untreated black olives in brine for antioxidant properties.

Determination of Serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Levels in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Case Control Study

        Yasemin Taş Torun,Esra Güney,Arzu Aral,Dicle Büyüktaşkin,Hüseyin Tunca,Yasemen Işik Taner,Elvan İşeri 대한정신약물학회 2019 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.17 No.4

Objective: The effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on neuronal development is known, but its relationship with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental disorder, has not yet been fully elucidated. To our knowledge, this is the first human study investigating serum VEGF levels in ADHD patients. In this study, it has been aimed to compare serum VEGF levels between a healthy control group and in ADHD patients to help determine the association between serum VEGF levels and ADHD. Methods: This study sample included forty-four patients diagnosed with ADHD and 43 healthy volunteer controls between 7 to 14 years old. Blood samples were taken from patients and the healthy control group to assess their serum VEGF levels. VEGF levels were calculated by subjecting the optical densities of the samples to concentrations of known standards as provided in the ELISA kit and then performing a regression correlation analysis. Results: The mean VEGF level of the children was 333.6 ± 209.8 in the ADHD group and 341.3 ± 201.8 in the control group. There were no statistically significant differences in serum VEGF levels between the ADHD and control groups (U = 926.000, z = −0.170, p = 0.865). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in serum VEGF levels for untreated ADHD cases and a healthy control group. This is the first human study investigating serum VEGF levels in ADHD patients, so there is a need to replicate these findings.

Clinical and Radiologic Review of Uncommon Cause of Profound Iron Deficiency Anemia: Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome

Yasemin Gunduz,Kıyasettin Asil,Yakup Ersel Aksoy,Laçin Tatlı Ayhan 대한영상의학회 2014 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.15 No.4

Median arcuate ligament syndrome is an anatomic and clinical entity characterized by dynamic compression of the proximal celiac artery by the median arcuate ligament, which leads to postprandial epigastric pain, vomiting, and weight loss. These symptoms are usually nonspecific and are easily misdiagnosed as functional dyspepsia, peptic ulcer disease, or gastropathy. In this report, we presented a 72-year-old male patient with celiac artery compression syndrome causing recurrent abdominal pain associated with gastric ulcer and iron deficiency anemia. This association is relatively uncommon and therefore not well determined. In addition, we reported the CT angiography findings and three-dimensional reconstructions of this rare case.

Effects of oleaster flour supplementation in total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities and their bioaccessibilities of cookies

        Yasemin Sahan,Emine Aydin,Ayse Inkaya Dundar,Dilek Dulger Altiner,Guler Celik,Duygu Gocmen 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.5

In presented study total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities and their bioaccessibilities from cookies supplemented with oleaster flour were investigated. Oleaster flours (OFs) were produced using two different methods (peeled oleaster flour: POF and unpeeled oleaster flour: UPOF) from two different genotypes. OFs were used to replace wheat flour in the cookie formulation (control) at the levels of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25% (w/w). According to the results, enrichment of OFs clearly increased total phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities and bioaccessibilities of cookies. The highest bioaccessible antioxidant capacities (ABTS, CUPRAC, and FRAP) of the samples were obtained from cookie samples enriched with 25% UPOF-1. In conclusion, the increases in phenolic contents, antioxidant capacities, and bioaccessibilities from cookies supplemented with OFs suggest the potential enhancement of beneficial health effect of cookie due to increased content of bioactive compounds present in oleaster flour.

Antimicrobial effect of PEG–PLA on food-spoilage microorganisms

        Yasemin Sahan,Ozan Gurbuz,Gulsen Goncagul,Ali Kara,Cuneyt Ozakin 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.4

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyethylene glycol–polylactic acid (PEG–PLA) have an organic structure and no negative effect on human health. The present study compares the antimicrobial effectiveness of PEG and PEG–PLA on microbial growth. The following pathogens and fungi were examined: seven bacteria strains and 10 fungi (four yeasts and six molds). PEG, a non-modified polymer, exhibited no inhibition effect on all test microorganisms. However, the antimicrobial effect increased with the concentration of PEG–PLA. Bacteria showed more sensitivity to PEG–PLA compared with the other microorganisms used in this study. Enterobacter ATCC 19434 was found to be the most resistant bacteria. Molds and yeasts were more resistant than bacteria against PEG–PLA. MIC and MFC could not be determined on the tested fungi owing to the level of concentrations used, with the exception of the yeast Candida albicans and the molds Penicillium expansum and Aspergillus parasiticus.
