        Modeling the effect of vibration on the quality of stirred yogurt during transportation

        When transporting yogurt, vibrations and sharpmovements can damage its quality. This study developed amodel to connect the changes in yogurt quality with thetransportation distance as simulated by the total number ofvibrations. Linear regression analysis showed that therewas a significant negative correlation between the waterholding capacity and hardness of the yogurt over the sametransport distance (p\0.05). The yogurt vibration modelwas established by combining principal component analysiswith a Back-Propagation Artificial Neural Networkmodel. The number of training iterations was 2669, with acorrelation coefficient of 0.96611, indicating that the modelwas reliable. The optimal transportation distance wasdetermined to be within the range from 20 rpm for 8 h to100 rpm for 4 h.

      • Pollen record of the centennial climate changes during 9-7 cal ka BP in the Changjiang (Yangtze) River Delta plain, China

        <B>Abstract</B><P>We reconstructed the centennial climate changes for the period of 9-7 cal ka BP in the upper region of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River Delta plain. A general warming and wetting trend from 8560 to 7220 cal yr BP was indicated by the decrease in <I>Quercus</I> (deciduous) and increases in <I>Quercus</I> (evergreen), <I>Pinus</I>, and Polypodiaceae spores. However, there were several brief climate fluctuations. A notable palynological change, from regional assemblages dominated by arboreal pollen to local assemblages mainly consisting of nonarboreal pollen, reflects climate fluctuations. The key indices of <I>Quercus</I> (deciduous), <I>Pinus</I>, herbs, fern spores, and palynological concentrations showed similar signs of centennial climate fluctuations. We suggest that the climate changes of the Dongge Cave and Yangtze River Delta regions were mainly affected by the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) during the period of 9-7 cal ka BP. The general warming trend may be associated with an intensified EASM, and solar activity may be one of the important factors driving the centennial climate changes. The ~8.2 ka event was also recorded in the Yangtze River Delta region, which suggests that there was a close relationship between the EASM and Greenland climate during the early Holocene.</P>

        Changes in the Expression and Distribution of Claudins, Increased Epithelial Apoptosis, and a Mannan-Binding Lectin-Associated Immune Response Lead to Barrier Dysfunction in Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Induced Rat Colitis

        Background/Aims: This animal study aimed to define the underlying cellular mechanisms of intestinal barrier dysfunction.Methods: Rats were fed 4% with dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) to induce experimental colitis. We analyzed the sugars in 24-hour urine output by high pressure liquid chromatography.The expression of claudins, mannan-binding lectin (MBL), and MBL-associated serine proteases 2 (MASP-2) were detected in the colonic mucosa by immunohistochemistry, and apoptotic cells in the colonic epithelium were detected by the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxyuridine triphosphate nick-end labeling method assay. Results: The lactulose and sucralose excretion levels in the urine of rats with DSS-induced colitis were significantly higher than those in the control rats. Mannitol excretion was lower and lactulose/mannitol ratios and sucralose/mannitol ratios were significantly increased compared with those in the control group (p<0.05). Compared with the controls, the expression of sealing claudins (claudin 3, claudin 5, and claudin 8) was significantly decreased, but that of claudin 1 was increased. The expression of pore-forming claudin 2 was upregulated and claudin 7 was downregulated in DSS-induced colitis. The epithelial apoptotic ratio was 2.8%±1.2% in controls and was significantly increased to 7.2%±1.2% in DSS-induced colitis. The expression of MBL and MASP-2 in the intestinal mucosa showed intense staining in controls, whereas there was weak staining in the rats with colitis. Conclusions: There was increased intestinal permeability in DSS-induced colitis. Changes in the expression and distribution of claudins, increased epithelial apoptosis, and the MASP-2-induced immune response impaired the intestinal epithelium and contributed to high intestinal permeability.         Feature Selection to Mine Joint Features from High-dimension Space for Android Malware Detection

        Android is now the most popular smartphone platform and remains rapid growth. There are huge number of sensitive privacy information stored in Android devices. Kinds of methods have been proposed to detect Android malicious applications and protect the privacy information. In this work, we focus on extracting the fine-grained features to maximize the information of Android malware detection, and selecting the least joint features to minimize the number of features. Firstly, permissions and APIs, not only from Android permissions and SDK APIs but also from the developer-defined permissions and third-party library APIs, are extracted as features from the decompiled source codes. Secondly, feature selection methods, including information gain (IG), regularization and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms, are used to analyze and utilize the correlation between the features to eliminate the redundant data, reduce the feature dimension and mine the useful joint features. Furthermore, regularization and PSO are integrated to create a new joint feature mining method. Experiment results show that the joint feature mining method can utilize the advantages of regularization and PSO, and ensure good performance and efficiency for Android malware detection.

        Anti-aging Effect of Mixed Extract from Medicinal Herbs

        목적: 본 연구는 음양오행의 원리를 기반으로 개발한 복합 약용 식물 추출물(mixed herbal extract, MHE) 피부 세포에서 항노화 효 능을 가지고 있는지를 확인하고 실제 화장품에 적용하여 in vivo 평가를 수행함으로써 피부 항노화 화장품 성분으로서 이용 가치를 확인하기 위해 진행되었다. 방법: 본 연구에서는 피부 노화 방지 효과가 있는 성분 개발을 위하여 연교, 질려자, 가시오가피, 옥죽, 지실 및 인삼을 포함하는 초음파 추출을 사용하여 MHE을 제조하였다. 이 복합 추출물을 이용해 섬유아세포에서 콜라겐 생성량 및 콜라겐 합성 및 분해와 관련된 MMP1과 TIMP1의 발현에 미치는 효과를 확인하였다. 또한 1% MHE를 함유한 화장품을 사용하여 피부 수분, 탄력, 결, 주름에 대한 임상 시험을 수행하였다. 결과: MHE는 pro-collagen type I 합성과 TIMP1 mRNA 발현을 촉진 할 뿐 아니라 MMP1 mRNA 및 단백질의 발현을 억제하는 효과를 가짐을 확인하였다. 또한, 1% MHE를 함유 한 화장품을 피부에 도포한 결과, 4주 후 피부 보습, 탄력, 결, 눈가가 개선되었다. 결론: MHE가 피부 세포에서 콜라겐 합성을 촉진하고 MMP1유전자 발현을 억제하는 효과를 가지고 있음을 확인하였으며, MHE를 적용한 화장품의 임상 시험에서 피부 개선 효과 확인하였다. 이를 통 해 MHE가 피부 항노화 화장품 성분으로서 가치가 있음을 확인하였다 Purpose: This study was conducted to confirm the applicability of a mixed herbal extract (MHE) as an anti-aging cosmetic ingredient by investigating its skin anti-aging activities in vitro and in vivo . Methods: In this study, we prepared MHE using an ultrasonic extraction containing Forsythiae fructus, Tribuli fructus, Solomon’s seal, Siberian ginseng, Ponciri fructus and Ginseng. We investigated the anti-aging effect of the MHE for skin in dermal fibroblasts. The anti-aging activity was determined by the type I collagen synthesis levels. Matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP1 ) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP1 ) mRNA levels were measured by qRT-PCR. MMP1 protein levels were evaluated by blotting analysis. Clinical tests of skin moisture, elasticity, texture, and wrinkles were performed using cosmetics containing 1% MHE. Results: The MHE induced the upregulation of pro-collagen type I synthesis and TIMP1 mRNA expression. The MHE led to the downregulation of MMP1 mRNA levels and protein levels. Furthermore, after skin application of cosmetics containing 1% MHE, skin hydration, elasticity, texture, and crow’s feet were improved 4 weeks after the treatment. Conclusion: MHE has an anti-aging effect by promoting collagen synthesis and suppressing MMP1 gene expression in vitro, and it has a skin improvement effect in vivo . Therefore, the MHE was shown to have value as a functional cosmetic ingredient.

        The Clinical Manifestation, Executive Dysfunction, and Caregiver Strain in Subthreshold Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

        Objective Subthreshold attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been suggested to be a “morbid condition” which also needs medical attention.Methods The present study recruited 89 children with subthreshold ADHD (sADHD), 115 children with diagnosed ADHD (cADHD), and 79 healthy controls (HC) to explore the clinical manifestation, executive functions (EFs) of sADHD, and the caregiver strain. The clinical manifestation was evaluated through clinical interviews and parent-reports. Executive functions were assessed both experimentally and ecologically. Caregiver strain was measured by a parent-reported questionnaire.Results For the clinical manifestation, both sADHD and cADHD indicated impairments when compared with HC. The comorbidities and the scaled symptoms indicated that the externalizing behaviors were relatively less serious in sADHD than cADHD, whereas the internalizing behaviors between two groups were comparable. For ecological EFs, sADHD scored between cADHD and HC in inhibition and working memory. For experimental EFs, sADHD was comparable to cADHD in inhibition, shifting, and was worse than cADHD in verbal working memory. For the caregiver strain, all scores of sADHD were between that in cADHD and that in HC.Conclusion Our present findings supported the suggestion of subthreshold ADHD as “morbid condition,” which should be treated with caution in clinical practice, especially for the internalizing behaviors and some key components of EFs.
