        On the Secondary Predication in Chinese

        The secondary predication in Chinese involves two different modes, namely the de-constructions and the V-V compounds. First we analyze the three different kinds of de-constructions such as resultatives, depictives, and modifying constructions. Though the three functions of de-constructions are designated by different Chinese characters, they are homonyms and thus induce some confusion for foreigners. We differentiate them by their syntactic structures and identify three distinct functions: (i) the phrase before the -de is a complement to the primary predicate, (ii) an adjunct of the sentence, or (iii) an adnominal that modifies the following noun. Then, we analyze the structure of resultative and depictive constructions involving the V-V compounds. Unlike English, where resultatives and depictives are expressed by a complement or an adjunct phrase, Chinese employs V-V compounds and so-called de-constructions. We show that Chinese employ a lexical resultative formation unlike the analytic phrasal resultative formation in English. In Particular, we show that there are three different structures for resultatives in Chinese such as [verb + adjective], [verb + verb], and [adjective + verb] forms. Finally, we show that the former two constructions can be used as resultatives and depictives, whereas the latter form can only be depictives.

        Genetic localization of the SPC gene controlling pod coiling direction in Medicago truncatula

        Background Handedness in plants introduced by helical growth of organs is frequently observed, and it has fascinated plant scientists for decades. However, the genetic control of natural handedness has not been revealed. In the model legume Medicago truncatula, pods can be coiled in a clockwise or anti-clockwise manner, providing a model for genetic analysis of plant handedness. Objective We aimed to localize the Sense of Pod Coiling (SPC) gene controlling pod coiling direction in M. truncatula. Methods Linkage analysis was used with a biparental population for fine mapping of the SPC gene. The genome sequence of M. truncatula Mt4.0 was used for marker identification and physical mapping. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between the parental lines were converted to CAPS (cleaved amplified polymorphic sequences) markers. Genetic map was constructed using the software JoinMap version 3.0. Gene predication and annotation provided by the M. truncatula genome database (http://www.medic agoge nome.org) was confirmed with the programs of FGENESH and Pfam 32.0, respectively. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) was used to analyze the relative expression levels of candidate genes. Results The genetic analysis indicated that the anti-clockwise coiling is dominant to clockwise and is controlled by the single gene, SPC. The SPC gene was delimited to a 250 kb-region on Chromosome 7. Total of 15 protein-coding genes were identified in the SPC locus through gene annotation and sequence analysis. Of those, two genes, potentially encoding a receptor-like kinase and a vacuolar cation/proton exchanger respectively, were selected as candidates for the SPC gene. Conclusions The result presented here lay a foundation for gene cloning of SPC, which will help us to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying helical growth in plant organs.

      • Study on the Method of Closed Loop Control for Gas Engine

        With the increasing number of vehicles, society and environmental problems become much more seriously. Aiming at the serious problems, CNG engine, which has better emission performance, has been paid much more attention. However, the CNG engine also has its own disadvantages, such as engine power deterioration, great influence of different mixture ratios of the gas and air on the optimum ignition time of the engine, and so on. Therefore, adaptive control for the air-fuel ratio and ignition timing should be properly adjusted with the consideration of the engine power, economy and emissions. There are two methods of controlling the ignition timing: mechanical and electronic control. In this paper, we develop an adoptive control method based on electronic control. According to the verification, the method can improve the efficiency of the CNG engine. It can be shown the validity of the adoptive method.

        한국어와 중국어의 복수표지에 대한 비교

        Mother tongue have a great influence on learning a foreign language. When using a foreign language, people tend to think in their mother tongue first and translate them into the foreign language, which usually leads to some syntax errors and non-fluent statements. Cross-linguistic comparisons can help foreign language learners avoid the errors due to the mother tongue thinking. In this study, we compare the plural markings of Korean ‘deul(들)’ and Chinese ‘men(們)’. We analyse the similarities and differences in grammatical category, meaning, and combination relationship. This paper draw fours conclusions: 1)Both ‘deul’ and ‘men’ are suffix to combine with noun and pronoun, 2) In the case of noun combination, ‘deul’ can be combined with not only a proper noun but also other nouns for expressing plural meaning, but ‘men’ can not be combined with the nouns that express object and the nouns of animals, unless the nouns of animals have already be anthropomorphized. 3)In the case of pronoun combination, ‘deul’ can not be combined with personal pronoun‘na(나)/, neo(너)’ directly, but can be combined in a way of ‘jeo hui deul(저희들), neo hui deul(너희들)’, however the usage of ‘men’ doesn’t have the same limitations, but cannot combine with demonstrative pronouns.

        Synthesis of γ-valerolactone from ethyl levulinate hydrogenation and ethyl 4-hydroxypentanoate lactonization over supported Cu-Ni bimetallic, bifunctional catalysts

        A stable and highly efficient supported Cu-Ni catalysts for the conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) toc-valerolactone (GVL) was developed. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPD, TPR, andXPS. The support effect of metal oxides (Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, and TiO2) revealed that Cu-Ni supported onAl2O3 showed the highest activity for EL hydrogenation to ethyl 4-hydroxypentanoate (EHP) and thesubsequent intramolecular esterification of EHP to GVL. EHP intramolecular esterification to GVL in theethanol solution was a reversible reaction with an equilibrium constant of 24 at 453 K. A simplified reactionkinetic network was established. The solvent had a significant influence on the reaction equilibriumand the catalyst stability. Cu-Ni/Al2O3 in n-hexane solvent gave a higher GVL yield than that in ethanolsolvent, and showed better recyclability than that in toluene solvent. With optimizing the conditions, Cu-Ni/Al2O3 gave 99.9% conversion and 98% selectivity to GVL with a space–time yield of 1.13 gGVL gcat-1 h1 inn-hexane solvent with good recyclability.

        Controlling the selectivity and deactivation of H-ZSM-5 by tuning b-axis channel length for glycerol dehydration to acrolein

        Glycerol dehydration to value-added acrolein over zeolite catalysts is a useful approach to offer asustainable economic route for the biodiesel industry. Glycerol dehydration over H-ZSM-5 withconventional morphology often exhibits a significant mass transfer limitation and inhibits the access toactive sites in the micropores, which causes low activity, selectivity, and severe catalyst deactivation. Inthis study, a significant impact of b-axis channel length on acrolein selectivity and catalyst activity wasrevealed by using H-ZSM-5 synthesized with varied channel length in b-axis of 60, 130, 180, and 250 nm. Complete glycerol conversion and high acrolein selectivity (88%) were observed over H-ZSM-5 with60 nm channels length in b-axis, due to high availability of active sites and enhanced diffusion throughthe shortest channels, which dramatically suppressed the coke formation. The catalysts with long b-axischannels exhibited a slow internal diffusion, leading to increased polymerization side reactions and cokeformation.

        A Simplified Li-ion Battery SOC Estimating Method

        The ampere-hour integral method and the open circuit voltage method are integrated via the extended Kalman filter method so as to overcome insufficiencies of the ampere-hour integral method and the open circuit voltage method for estimating battery SOC. The process noise covariance and the measurement noise covariance of the extended Kalman filter method are simplified based on the Thevenin equivalent circuit model, with a proposed simplified SOC estimating method. Verification of DST experiments indicated that the battery SOC estimating method is simple and feasible, and the estimated SOC error is no larger than 2%.

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This paper reports the preparation of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) by incorporating a two-dimensional zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L) into a highly gas permeable hydroxyl group-containing polyimide (PI) for hydrogen separation. ZIF-L has a leaf-shaped morphology with excellent CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption properties due to strong interaction between ZIF-L and CO<SUB>2</SUB> molecules. The dispersion of ZIF-L crystals in the polymer phase increased CO<SUB>2</SUB> adsorption and restricted CO<SUB>2</SUB> transport through MMMs, resulting in a significant increase of H<SUB>2</SUB> selectivity over CO<SUB>2</SUB>. The gas transport properties of MMMs with a ZIF-L loading up to 20wt% were investigated, and the results showed such MMMs had a H<SUB>2</SUB> permeability of 260 Barrers and ideal H<SUB>2</SUB>/CO<SUB>2</SUB> selectivity of 13.4 at room temperature.
