      • Perioperative Comprehensive Supportive Care Interventions for Chinese Patients with Esophageal Carcinoma: a Prospective Study

        Objective: To assess the effects of perioperative comprehensive supportive care interventions on outcome of Chinese esophageal cancer patients in a prospective study. Methods: 60 patients with primary esophageal carcinoma were randomized into an intervention group (IG, n=31) and a control group (CG, n=29). The Chinese version of symptom checklist-90 (SCL-90) was adopted to assess their psychological status. The interventions, including health education, psychological support, stress management, coping strategies and behavior training, were carried out in 3 phases (preoperative, postoperative I and postoperative II), and psychological effects were thereafter evaluated accordingly before surgery, and 1 week, 4 weeks and 24 weeks post-surgery. Medical costs were estimated at discharge. Survival of patients was estimated each year post-surgery. General health status and satisfaction-with-hospital were surveyed by a follow-up questionnaire 4 years post-surgery. Results: All the subjects demonstrated higher scores in the preoperative phase than the normal range of Chinese population concerning 7 psychological domains including somatization, obsessive-compulsive, depression, anxiety, hostility, phobic anxiety and paranoid ideation. Although no significant difference was observed between the two groups at admission, the scores of IG, which tended to decrease at a faster rate, were generally lower than those of CG at weeks 1, 4 and 24 post-surgery. The length of hospital stay and medical costs of IG were significantly less than those of CG and satisfaction-with-hospital was better. However, there was no significant difference in 4-year survival or health status between two groups. Conclusions: Appropriate perioperative comprehensive supportive care interventions help to improve the psychological state of Chinese patients with esophageal carcinoma, to reduce health care costs and to promote satisfaction of patients and their families with hospital.

        The timings of vitellogenesis and choriogenesis in the Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata oocytes

        In order to provide a biological basis for the development of population management strategies, a critical need is to better understand the reproduction of agricultural pests. In the current paper, we timed the previtellogenesis, vitellogenesis and choriogenesis processes in Henosepilachna vigintioctopunctata (Fabricius), (Coleoptera, Cocci nellidae), a serious polyphagous defoliator damaging a wide range of crops in Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae. The female reproductive system was comprised of two ovaries, two lateral oviducts, a median oviduct, a sperma thecal sac and a genital chamber. Each ovary had an average of 28 (±0.4) telotrophic meroistic ovarioles. In the ovarioles of 4-day-old females, only previtellogenesis process was observed. The vitellogenesis occurred at 5 to 7 days after female emergence, while the choriogenesis took place at 8 and 9 days post eclosion. Copulation and oviposition occurred before and at 8 days post emergence. In order to confirm the observation, HvVgR and HvVg were identified and their expression was examined. HvVgR was abundantly transcribed in the ovary, whereas HvVg was richly expressed in the fat body. The temporal expression profiles showed that the high levels of HvVgR and HvVg were accompanied with the active accumulation of yolk proteins and the occurrence of intercellular spaces among follicle cells. Moreover, only one oocyte was observed per ovariole in active vitellogenesis. The observation demonstrates that oocytes are continuously matured and the oviposition persists in females from 8 days to at least 13 days post eclosion.

        Investigation on the Preparation and Adsorption Performance of Bamboo Fiber Based Activated Carbon

        In this work, an approach was explored to make natural fiber based activated carbon with high adsorption capacity for treating dyeing wastewater. Bamboo fiber based activated carbon (BFAC) was prepared by bamboo fiber extracted from bamboo strips by extracting technique. An orthogonal experiment was carried out to obtain optimum preparation condition for the best dye adsorption. The microstructures of BFAC were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Adsorption mechanism of BFAC to methylene blue (MB) was studied and the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 651.7 mg g-1. The adsorption kinetic was better described by the pseudo-second-order model. Microstructure characterization showed lots of opened pores and cracks with different size on BFAC, with Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 1370 m2 g-1 and total pore volume of 0.9411 cm3 g-1. The analysis indicated that cellulose crystal of bamboo fiber was severely destroyed in the preparation process, which could contribute to the formation of pores. Moreover, -OH and -C=O functional groups on BFAC are beneficial for adsorbing MB in aqueous solution. As a result, adopting bamboo fiber may help form BFAC with high BET surface area, which proved to be an effective idea to prepare activated carbon with high adsorption performance.

        Electroacupuncture Promotes Motor Function Recovery in MCAO/R Rats by Activating Astrocyte-Related PI3K/AKT Pathway

        Background: Electroacupuncture (EA) is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine method to manage various diseases, including cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury (CIRI). Objectives: We assessed the neuroprotective effects of EA and examined its mechanism in a rat model of the middle cerebral artery occlusion-reperfusion (MCAO/R). The gait analysis was performed to evaluate the neuroprotective effects. Western blot and immunohistochemistry assays were carried out to determine the molecular mechanisms of EA. Methods: Male SD rats were randomly divided into the sham operation group, right MCAO/R group, and EA group. EA was administered every day (4/20 Hz, 10 min/1 d) at the following acupoints: Baihui (DU20), Yintang (EX-HN3), and Zusanli (ST36). Gait and motor function were analyzed from day 8 onward. Results: The plantar support and balance coordination of MCAO/R rats decreased, and the cellular structure of the ischemic penumbra was unclear. EA improved the gait dynamics of the rats, adjusted the cell structure, further activated astrocytes, and increased the expression and phosphorylation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/PKB or AKT). Conclusion: EA promoted astrocyte-related effects in the rat model. Our findings suggest that the neuroprotective mechanism of EA may be related to the activation of the PI3K/ AKT signaling pathway. The intervention enhanced brain protection and improved motor functions.

      • MAGED4 Expression in Glioma and Upregulation in Glioma Cell Lines with 5-Aza-2'-Deoxycytidine Treatment

        Melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) family genes have been considered as potentially promising targets for anticancer immunotherapy. MAGED4 was originally identified as a glioma-specific antigen. Current knowledge about MAGED4 expression in glioma is only based on mRNA analysis and MAGED4 protein expression has not been elucidated. In the present study, we investigated this point and found that MAGED4 mRNA and protein were absent or very lowly expressed in various normal tissues and glioma cell line SHG44, but overexpressed in glioma cell lines A172,U251,U87-MG as well as glioma tissues, with significant heterogeneity. Furthermore, MAGED4 protein expression was positively correlated with the glioma type and grade. We also found that the expression of MAGED4 inversely correlated with the overall methylation status of the MAGED4 promoter CpG island. Furthermore, when SHG44 and A172 with higher methylation were treated with the DNA demethylating agent 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-AZA-CdR) reactivation of MAGED4 mRNA was mediated by significant demethylation in SHG44 instead of A172. However, 5-AZA-CdR treatment had no effect on MAGED4 protein in both SHG44 and A172 cells. In conclusion, MAGED4 is frequently and highly expressed in glioma and is partly regulated by DNA methylation. The results suggest that MAGED4 might be a promising target for glioma immunotherapy combined with 5-AZA-CdR to enhance its expression and eliminate intratumor heterogeneity.

      • Detection of Building in Natural Images with one New Discriminative Random Fields

        This paper presents a new Discriminative Random Fields (DRFs) framework. Based on the DRFs framework proposed by Kumar and Hebert, the following improvements have been conducted. Firstly, the interaction potential and the associated potential model are simplified. Secondly, we reduce the dimension of the multi-scale features, re-definedimension of the single-scale feature, and increase the color feature of Building. Thirdly,the quasi-Newton method with linear search and gradient descent method are adopted to solve parameters, whichget a simple model and achieve good performance. Finally, the partition function of the DRF is eliminatedby using Pseudo-likelihood method for parameter learning. The simulation results show thatthe proposed method’s false positive rate is lower than the method from Kumar and Hebert, while the correct rate and detection ratearehigher than their experimental effects after these improvements.

        이중언어 중국인 석박사 학생의 유학생활 만족도와 개선방안 연구

        본 연구는 이중언어 전공인 중국인 석박사 재학생 및 졸업생을 연구 대상으로 하여 그들의 유학생활에 대한 만족도를 알아보고 이를 분석하여 개선점을 제시하고자 한다. 연구자는 현상학적 방법을 사용하여 N대학 이중 언어 석·박사과정의 중국인 학생 8명을 연구 참여자로 선정하였다. 중국어로 1대1 심층면담을 통해 얻은 자료를 Colaizzi가 제시한 방법을 활용하여 분석했다. 그 결과, 연구 참여자들은 한국생활, 특히 석박사 과정의 유학생활에 대해 대체로 만족했으나 전공수업, 비전공수업, 학교 인간관계, 학교 행정 및 시설 등의 분야에서의 다소 불만족을 표현하였고 이러한 분석결과들을 통해 연구자는 5가지의 개선방안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 이중언어 석박사 과정에 대한 선행연구들의 공백을 보완한 기초 자료로서의 의미가 있다. 향후 더욱 다양한 배경을 가진 연구참여자에 대한 질적·양적 연구가 필요하다. This study aims to study Chinese master's and doctoral students in bilingual courses to find out their satisfaction with their study abroad life and suggest improvements. Using phenomenological methods, the researcher selected eight Chinese students with master's and doctoral courses in bilingualism at N University as participants in the study. Data obtained through one-on-one in-depth interviews in Chinese were analyzed using the method suggested by Colaizzi. As a result, Chinese master's and doctoral students were generally satisfied with Korean life, especially studying abroad for master's and doctoral courses, but they reported inconveniences in the fields of major classes, non-major classes, school human relations, school administration and facilities, and through these, the researcher suggested five improvement measures. This study is meaningful as basic data that supplements the gap between previous studies on bilingual master's and doctoral courses. In the future, qualitative and quantitative studies are needed on research participants from a large scale of various backgrounds.
