<P>MnTe layers of high crystalline quality were successfully grown on Si(111) and Al2O3(0001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. We have investigated the structure, magnetic and electric transport properties of MnTe layers by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometer, physical properties measurement system (PPMS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization of MnTe layers on Si(111) and Al2O3(0001) substrates by X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed a hexagonal structure of polycrystalline growth for MnTe/Si(111) and epitaxial growth for MnTe/Al2O3 (0001), respectively. Investigation of magnetic properties for MnTe layers showed ferromagnetic properties above room temperature unlike antiferromagnetic bulk MnTe materials. The great irreversibility between zero-field-cooling and field-cooling magnetization were observed. Apparent ferromagnetic hysteresis loops are measured at room temperature. In electro-transport measurements, the temperature dependence of resistivity revealed a noticeable semiconducting behaviors and showed a conduction via variable range hopping (VRH) at low temperature. From XPS results, we assume that the origin of ferromagnetism in samples may be due to the breaking of superexchange antiferromagnetic correlations between Mn spin moments arising from Tellurium vacancies.</P>
Coil Configuration Design using the Topology Optimization : Applications to Optical Pickup Actuator

The objective of this research is to develop a method optimizing the coil configuration for the maximum Lorentz force in a given direction, and the minimum Lorentz forces and torques in other directions. To achieve this objective, topology optimization of coil configuration is set up. Unlike the existing application of the topology optimization method in coil design which can handle a fixed-direction current density field only, the proposed topology optimization approach is capable of dealing with varying current density magnitudes and directions. The varying field must be considered for the Lorentz force maximization problem. The effectiveness of the proposed formulation has been checked by comparing an optimal coil configuration with the existing fine-pattern coil commercially available.

2-㎛ thick GaN epilayer was prepared, and 80 KeV Co? ions with a dose of 3 × 1016 ㎝?2 were implanted into GaN at 350 ℃. The implanted samples were post annealed at 700 ℃. We have investigated the magnetic and structural properties of Co ion-implanted GaN by various measurements. HRXRD results did not show any peaks associated with second phase formation and only the diffraction from the GaN layer and substrate structure were observed. SIMS profiles of Co implanted into GaN before and after annealing at 700 ℃ have shown a projected range of ~390 A with 7.4% concentration and that there is little movement in Co. AFM measurement shows the form of surface craters for 700 ℃-annealed samples. The magnetization curve and temperature dependence of magnetization taken in zero-field-cooling (ZFC) and field-cooling (FC) conditions showed the features of superparamagnetic system in film. XPS measurement showed the metallic Co 2p core levels spectra for 700 ℃-annealed samples. From this, it could be explained that magnetic property of our films originated from Co magnetic clusters.

Exosomes are small membranous vesicles which contain abundant RNA molecules, and are transferred from releasing cells to uptaking cells. MicroRNA (miRNA) is one of the transferred molecules affecting the adopted cells, including glioma cells. We hypothesized that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can secrete exosomes loading miRNA and have important effects on the progress of gliomas. To determine these effects by treating exosomal miRNA in culture media of miRNA mimic transfected MSCs, we assessed the in vitro cell proliferation and invasion capabilities, and the expression level of relative proteins associated with cell apoptosis, growth and migration. For animal studies, the mice injected with U87 cells were exposed to exosomes derived from miRNA-584-5p transfected MSCs, to confirm the influence of exosomal miRNA on the progress of glioma. Based on our results, we propose a new targeted cancer therapy wherein exosomes derived from miRNA transfected MSCs could be used to modulate tumor progress as the anticancer vehicles. Purpose: As thyroid cancer patients are experiencing longer disease-free survival periods, evaluating their quality of life after surgery has become crucial. However, studies on this topic have primarily focused on Western populations, leaving a gap in understanding the Korean patient population’s experiences and needs. This study aims to address this gap and provide insights into the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the quality of life of Korean thyroid cancer patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy or total thyroidectomy. Patients were surveyed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ-C30, ver. 3.0) during outpatient clinic visits from January to September 2015. The results were analyzed by comparing them to scores of the general population and based on the time elapsed since surgery. This approach allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of the quality-of-life outcomes in this patient population. Results: The study found that thyroidectomy had a notable impact on patients’ role and cognitive functions. Patients also experienced worsened symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea, and constipation, which improved over time and returned to normal levels. However, there were no significant changes in other functions and symptoms after surgery. Conclusion: The study’s findings showed that thyroidectomy had a relatively minor impact on the functional and symptomatic well-being of patients. Therefore, the results suggest that thyroid surgery may be a safe and effective treatment option for thyroid cancer patients seeking to maintain a good quality of life.
