      • 난지형 조숙종 마늘 신품종 ‘올캐’ 특성

        원예연구소 남해출장소에서는 원예적 특성이 우수한 유전자원을 도입 선발하여 ‘올캐’로 명명하였다. 특성평가를 2000년부터 3년간 실시하였으며 2003년부터 3년간 지역적응시험을 실시한 결과 그 특성이 우수하여 품종등록 하였다. 도입 육성한 ‘올캐’ 마늘은 난지형 조숙종 마늘로 생태형으로는 난지형이며 추대형은 완전 추대종이다. 인경의 모양은 아래가 평편한 구형이며 구색과 인편색은 약간 자색이 돈다. 인편의 배열은 동심형(concentric)으로 ‘남도’ 마늘과 같다. 초형은 직립이며 초장, 엽초경 및 잎의 수는 대비종인 ‘남도’ 마늘에 비해서 약간 작거나 적으며 잎의 색깔은 ‘남도’ 마늘에 비해서 약간 연한 녹색이다. 평균구중은 42.2g으로 ‘남도’ 마늘 40.5g 보다 약간 무거우며 인경의 모양은 대비종인 ‘남도’ 마늘과 비슷하다. ‘올캐’ 마늘의 추대기는 3월 하순으로 ‘남도’ 마늘보다 15~20일 정도 빠르며 수확기도 일주일 이상 빠르다. Namhae Sub-station of National Horticultural Research Institute has collected 240 different garlic germplasms since 1999 and has used germplasms of superior quality. Among them, ‘Namhae 57328’ is a precocious variety with superior characteristics of growth and bulb, and was named ‘Allkae’ garlic (Allium sativum) in 2006. The garlic was registered after 3 consecutive years’ assessment of the variety trait starting from 2000 and a 3 consecutive years’ adaptability test from 2003. The ecotype of ‘Allkae’ garlic is southern one and bolting one is complete bolting type. The bottom of a bulb is flat and the colors of a bulb and a clove are light purple, and the arrangement of cloves is concentric as in ‘Namdo’ garlic. The plant type is erect one and its height is slightly smaller than ‘Namdo’ garlic’ one but it’s bolting in mid March which is about 20 days ahead of ‘Namdo’ garlic. Average bulb weight is 42.2 g which is slightly heavier than ‘Namdo’ garlic (40.5 g). The shape of the bulb is similar with ‘Namdo’ garlic.

      • A rare case of primary cutaneous plasmacytosis on left mandibular area

        Cutaneous plasma cell infiltration can be seen in various disorders, including amyloidosis, lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, plasma cell neoplasm and infectious diseases such as syphilis and deep fungal infections. Above all, primary cutaneous plasmacytosis is regarded as a rare benign proliferation of plasma cells which can present as reddish papuloplaques or nodules without other systemic involvement. A 44-year-old man presented with asymptomatic irregular surfaced erythematous nodule on left mandibular area. Skin biopsy specimens showed multiple plasma cells and lymphoid cell infiltration in entire dermis. There were no fungal organisms identified in PAS and GMS stainings. Immunohistochemical stainings showed positive for CD 138 but no light chain restriction on Kappa and lambda light chains suggesting of no monoclonality. He has no evidence of other organ involvement or infection including VDRL in laboratory tests. Multiple myeloma was ruled out by normal findings of calcium level, renal function, level of complete blood counts and imaging of bones. Extramedullary plasmacytoma was excluded because of no monoclonality. He was finally diagnosed with primary cutaneous plasmacytosis based on histological findings and was treated with surgical excision. Herein we report a rare case of primary cutaneous plasmacytosis on left mandibular area.

      • A rare case of multiple cutaneous larva migrans

        Cutaneous larva migrans is caused by larvae of nematodes such as hookworms which can penetrate into the skin. When directly contacted with soil which is contaminated with the larvae, the infestation can occur. The predilection sites are known as the exposed area such as feet and forearms, and clinically presented as irregularly linear, elevated burrow. A 4-year-old boy presented with multiple linear migratory elevated erythematous papuloplaques on both extremities, abdomen and perianal area with itching. Skin biopsy specimens from lesion of left thigh showed traces of hookworm in epidermis, perivascular infiltration with lymphocytes and some eosinophils in dermis. The patient traveled Vietnam 2 weeks before visit and played with his father burying his body in the sand of beach which might be contaminated. He was treated with topical ivermectin and oral albendazole and showed considerable improvement. In our literature review, the parasite can be found 1 to 2 cm ahead of the visible track within a burrow located in the upper layers of the epidermis but often not observed in the biopsies. With typical lesions and contact history of sand, he was finally diagnosed with cutaneous larva migrans. Herein we report a case of cutaneous larva migrans with literature review.

        Synthesis and nonlinear optical properties of a novel polyurethane containing cyanovinylthiophene with enhanced thermal stability of dipole alignment for electro-optic applications

        <P>Stabilization of electrically induced dipole alignment is one of the important criteria in the development of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers for electro-optic device applications. Polyurethanes for NLO applications have attracted attention because of their high thermal stability due to hydrogen bonding. In the work reported here, we designed and synthesized a new type of NLO polyurethane, in which the pendant NLO chromophores are part of the polymer backbone. This mid-type NLO polymer is expected to have the merits of both main-chain and side-chain NLO polymers, namely stable dipole alignment and good solubility. 1-[3,4-Di-(2-hydroxyethoxy)phenyl]-2-(2-thienyl)ethene was prepared and condensed with 3,3′-dimethoxy-4,4′-biphenylenediisocyanate to yield a polyurethane. This polyurethane was reacted with tetracyanoethylene to give a novel Y-type polyurethane (7) containing 1-(3,4-dioxyphenyl)-2-[5-(1,2,2-tricyanovinyl)-2-thienyl]ethenes as NLO chromophores, which constitute part of the polymer backbone. Polyurethane 7 is soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and dimethylsulfoxide. It shows a thermal stability up to 280 °C from thermogravimetric analysis with a glass transition temperature obtained from differential scanning calorimetry of ca 162 °C. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient (d<SUB>33</SUB>) of a poled polymer film of he polyurethane at 1560 nm fundamental wavelength is ca 1.11 × 10<SUP>−18</SUP> C. Polymer 7 exhibits an enhanced thermal stability and no significant SHG decay is observed below 150 °C, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.       • A case of basal cell carcinoma of the nail bed

        Basal cell carcinoma is widely regarded as the most common malignant skin tumor and usually seen in head and neck. Ralely, nail bed and nail folds can be atypical sites for BCC. The initial diagnosis of chronic paronychia lead to delay in diagnosis so that taking history and adequate biopsy are essential in making timely diagnosis. Previous study reported that the BCC of nail bed was more often on the fingers than on the toes and had a slight predilection to occur in men. Ulceration was the most common presentation of nail unit BCC, which was noted in more than one-half of patients. Mohs micrographic surgery with second intension healing is effective to make excellent cosmetic results. The incidence of metastasis is extremely rare and same as other BCCs, which has been reported with incidence rates of 0.0028% to 0.55%. A 55-year-old man presented with ill-defined 0.8 cm sized pigmented lesion on left thumb nail bed without trauma history. Duration of the lesion was 1 month. Specimen showed that basophilic cells formed budding tumor proliferations extending from the undersurface of the epidermis to the dermis. HMB45 and S-100 showed negative results. He has no any other past history and laboratory study showed normal findings. The patient was finally diagnosed as BCC of the nail bed and referred to plastic surgeon for wide excision and full thickness skin graft. Herein we report a relatively rare case of BCC of the nail bed.

        Expression of an Angiogenin Binding Peptide and Its Anti-Angiogenic Activity

        In the previous report (Choi et al., 1997), the angiogenin binding peptides identified from a phage-peptide library were analyzed by using the fusion proteins composed of the Escherichia coli maltose binding protein and its corresponding peptides. However, it was difficult to obtain a sufficient amount of the fusion proteins required for further analysis because of the low expression level. We now report a high level expression of the fusion protein and analysis of its anti-angiogenin activity. The use of strong T7 promoter and removal of signal sequence allowed about a 20-fold increase in the expression efficiency of the fusion protein. We were able to obtain about 10 mg of purified fusion protein from one liter of culture. The purified fusion protein showed angiogenin-specific affinity and inhibited the binding of biotinylated actin to human angiogenin at IC60 of 0.6 mM. Its anti-angioenin activity was also revealed by the chorio-allantoic membrane assay.

      • A rare case of mucinous nevus on the buttock

        Mucinous nevus is a rare benign entity classified as a cutaneous mucinosis or connective tissue nevus. The principal site is known as trunk and clinically presented as asymptomatic growing grouped papuloplaques with unilateral distribution at birth or early adulthood. The band-like amorphous mucin deposition in the upper dermis is regarded as its own histologic features. A 11-year-old boy presented with asymptomatic multiple papuloplaques on left side of buttocks. Skin biopsy specimens from his lesion of left buttock showed orthokeratosis, acanthosis and slight papillomatosis in epidermis and also amorphous bluish materials in papillary dermis. These materials were proven as mucin by staining of alcian blue. In this case, the patient showed verrucous lesions on left side of buttock near the anus which is known as uncommon sites. We firstly suspect this findings as condyloma accuminatum, but it was ruled out by negative findings of HPV-PCR and band-like deposition of mucin in upper dermis without abnormal findings such as large vacuolated epithelial cells Therefore, we emphasize the importance of skin biopsy including staining of mucin to confirm mucinous nevus near the anus which can be misdiagnosed as condyloma accuminatum. Herein, we report a rare case of mucinous nevus on left buttock area.
