Bragg reflection of water waves by three kinds of surface-piercing fixed structures with rectangular, cosinoidal and triangular shapes is studied. Boundary element method is used to analyze the wave scattering by these structures based on the linear wave theory. Results of reflection and transmission coefficients are validated by comparing with those available in literature. These structures with proper configurations are proved to be effective in attenuating waves by using Bragg reflection, and the triangular structures are found to be the best choices among the structures with same width and same area. Systematic calculations are then carried out for the triangular structures by varying the number, the draft, the width, the gap and the combination of width and gap of the structures to analyze their influences on the characteristics of Bragg reflection. The results are of reference values for design of the structures to attenuate waves based on the Bragg reflection.

Large-scale morphology-controlled SWCNT/polymeric microsphere arrays can be obtained by a wet chemical self-assembly technique. The loading of SWCNTs, the length of SWCNTs, and the size and nature of polymeric microspheres can easily be controlled. Similar results can also be reached using this method for MWCNTs. In both types of CNTs, they form an interesting interactive ‘net’ structure on spheres and sphere joints. The SWCNT/PS-modified Au electrode was used for detection of uric acid by cyclic voltammetry and single-potential time-based techniques. The preliminary results show that the modified electrode presents good sensitivity and stability to uric acid.

Huang, Tao,Gong, Wei-Hua,Li, Xiu-Cheng,Zou, Chun-Ping,Jiang, Guang-Jian,Li, Xu-Hui,Qian, Hao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.7
Purpose: To investigate the killing effect on OS cells of a combination of oxaliplatin and TRAIL and related molecular mechanisms. Methods: TRAIL and oxaliplatin were applied to OS732 cells singly or jointly and survival inhibition rates were measured by MTT assay, changes of cellular shape being assessed with inverted phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy. Apoptotic rates were analyzed by flow cytometry (FCM) and immunocytochemistry was used to examine Mcl1 expression of OS732 cells. Results: The survival inhibition rate of combined application of $100{\mu}g/ml$ TRAIL and $1{\mu}g/ml$ oxaliplatin on OS-732 cells was significantly higher than that of either agent singly (p<0.01). Changes of cellular shape and apoptotic rates also indicated apoptosis-inducing effects of combined application to be much stronger than those of individual application. Oxaliplatin had the effect of down-regulating Mcl1 expression and sensitizing OS cells to TRAIL-induced apoptosis. Conclusion: A combination of TRAIL and oxaliplatin exerts strong killing effects on OS-732 cells which might be related to down-regulation of Mcl1 expression.
Three-dimensional Spatiotemporal Accessible Solitons in a PT-symmetric Potential
Wei-Ping Zhong,Milivoj R. Belić,Tingwen Huang 한국광학회 2012 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.16 No.4
Utilizing the three-dimensional Snyder–Mitchell model with a PT-symmetric potential, we study the influence of PT symmetry on beam propagation in strongly nonlocal nonlinear media. The complex Coulomb potential is used as the PT-symmetric potential. A localized spatiotemporal accessible soliton solution of the model is obtained. Specific values of the modulation depth for different soliton parameters are discussed. Our results reveal that in these media the localized solitons can exist in various shapes, such as single-layer and multi-layer disk-shaped structures, as well as vortex-ring and necklace patterns.
Oncogenesis and the Clinical Significance of K-ras in Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma
Huang, Chun,Wang, Wei-Min,Gong, Jian-Ping,Yang, Kang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.5
The RAS family genes encode small GTP-binding cytoplasmic proteins. Activated KRAS engages multiple effector pathways, notably the RAF-mitogen-activated protein kinase, phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and RalGDS pathways. In the clinical field, K-ras oncogene activation is frequently found in human cancers and thus may serve as a potential diagnostic marker for cancer cells in circulation. This mini-review aims to summarise information on Ras-induced oncogenesis and the clinical significance of K-ras.
Efficient Killing Effect of Osteosarcoma Cells by Cinobufacini and Cisplatin in Combination
Huang, Tao,Gong, Wei-Hua,Li, Xiu-Cheng,Zou, Chun-Ping,Jiang, Guang-Jian,Li, Xu-Hui,Qian, Hao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.6
Purpose: To study the killing effects on osteosarcoma cells of cinobufacini and cisplatin in combination and the related mechanisms so as to explore the chemotherapeutic method with integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicines. Methods: Cinobufacini and cisplatin were applied to OS732 cells singly or jointly and survival rates were measured by MTT assay. Changes in cellular shape were observed with inverted phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy and apoptosis rates were analyzed with flow cytometry (FCM). Immunocytochemistry were used to examine the Fas expression of OS732 cells. Results: The combination of cinobufacini and cisplatin had the effect of up-regulating Fas expression and inducing apoptosis. The survival rate of combined application of 100 ${\mu}g/ml$ cinobufacini and 1 ${\mu}g/ml$ cisplatin on OS-732 cells was significantly lower than with either of the agents alone (p<0.01). Changes in cellular shape and apoptotic rates also indicated the apoptosis-inducing effects of combined application were much enhanced. Conclusion: The combination of cinobufacini and cisplatin demonstrated strong killing effects on OS-732 cells which might be related to up-regulation of Fas expression.

Purpose: To study enhancing effects of paclitaxel in the thermochemotherapy of osteosarcoma cell lines and related mechanisms. Materials and Methods: Paclitaxel and carboplatin were used alone or jointly on OS732 cell lines in the presence of hyperthermia. Inhibition of proliferation was measured by MTT assay and cellular changes were assessed with inverted phase contrast and fluorescence microscopy. Apoptosis was analyzed with flow cytometry (FCM) and Fas expression by immunocytochemistry. Results: At $43^{\circ}C$, one hour after the application of 10ug/ml paclitaxel and $5{\mu}g/ml$ carboplatin on OS732 cells jointly, the survival rate was 15.8% which was significantly lower than with $10{\mu}g/ml$ paclitaxel (45.8%) and $5{\mu}g/ml$ carboplatin (47.7%) respectively (P<0.01). Moreover, changes of morphology and apoptotic rates indicated that the apoptosis-inducing effect of combined application was also much enhanced, as evident also regarding Fas expression. Conclusion: Paclitaxel is conducive to thermochemotherapy of osteosarcoma cell lines, possibly accomplished by up-regulation of Fas expression with induction of apoptosis.

Objective: Endometrial cancer is the most common malignancy of the female genital tract worldwide, and the associated relationship between endometrial cancer formation and various antipsychotics need to be confirmed. Methods: We conducted a case-control study by using data from Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database to compare individual antipsychotic exposure between females with and without endometrial cancer. Among 14,079,089 females in the 12-year population-based national dataset, 9,502 females with endometrial cancer were identified. Their medical records of exposure to antipsychotics, including quetiapine, haloperidol, risperidone, olanzapine, amisulpride, clozapine, and aripiprazole, for up to 3 years before endometrial cancer diagnosis were reviewed. Daily dosage and cumulative exposure days were analyzed in the risky antipsychotic users. Additionally, the subsequent 5-year mortality rate of endometrial cancer among users of the risky antipsychotic were also analyzed. Results: Among endometrial cancer patients, the proportion of those who have used haloperidol before being diagnosed with endometrial cancer is significantly higher than other antipsychotic users. The significant odds ratio (OR) and a 95% confidence interval of 1.75 (1.31−2.34) were noted. Furthermore, haloperidol users were associated with a significantly higher 5-year mortality rate after getting endometrial cancer than non-users. Conclusion: There is a high correlation between the use of haloperidol and endometrial cancer formation. However, the underlying pathological biomechanisms require additional investigations.

The ascomycete fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides infects a wide range of plant hosts and causes enormous economic losses in the world. The transcription factors (TFs) play an important role in development and pathogenicity of many organisms. In this study, we found that the C2H2 TF CgCrzA is localized in both cytoplasm and nucleus under standard condition, and it translocated from cytoplasm to nucleus in a calcineurin- dependent manner. Moreover, the ΔCgCrzA was hypersensitive to cell wall perturbing agents and showed severe cell wall integrity defects. Deletion of the CgCRZA inhibited the development of invasive structures and lost pathogenicity to plant hosts. Our results suggested that calcineurin-responsive TF CgCrzA was not only involved in regulating cell wall integrity, but also in morphogenesis and virulence in C. gloeosporioides.
