• ANALYTIC APPROACH TO CYCLE TIME OF THREE-STAGE MATERIALS HANDLING SYSTEMS CALCULATION

Vidovic, Milorad,Kim, Kap Hwan 한국경영과학회 2001 한국경영과학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.- No.1(1)

Estimating the productivity of materials handling systems is an important task, which has to be realized in various logistics, industrial, and transportation systems. Productivity calculation may be done in several ways. Usual techniques are simple analytical techniques based on cycle time calculation in case of cyclic handling facilities (cranes, lift trucks, trailers,…). Also, very often simulation and queuing theory is also used. However, as a rule, all those approaches, except simulation, are usually used for productivity calculation for the case of single stage material handling systems. On the other hand, many material handling processes in real systems are multi-stage in nature (the best example is container port where loading-unloading processes are realized successively by berth cranes, trailers and yard cranes). Thus an analytic technique, accurate enough, undoubtedly could be always useful. In this paper an analytical approach is considered. The analytic model is based on probability theory and gives opportunity for very accurate calculation of compound (composite) cycle time of three-stage materials handling system in case when the probability distribution of “technical” cycle times of each stage is known.

      • Improving the Robustness of Myoelectric Pattern Recognition for Upper Limb Prostheses by Covariate Shift Adaptation

        Vidovic, Marina M.-C.,Hwang, Han-Jeong,Amsuss, Sebastian,Hahne, Janne M.,Farina, Dario,Muller, Klaus-Robert IEEE 2016 IEEE transactions on neural systems and rehabilita Vol.24 No.9

Fundamental changes over time of surface EMG signal characteristics are a challenge for myocontrol algorithms controlling prosthetic devices. These changes are generally caused by electrode shifts after donning and doffing, sweating, additional weight or varying arm positions, which results in a change of the signal distribution-a scenario often referred to as covariate shift. A substantial decrease in classification accuracy due to these factors hinders the possibility to directly translate EMG signals into accurate myoelectric control patterns outside laboratory conditions. To overcome this limitation, we propose the use of supervised adaptation methods. The approach is based on adapting a trained classifier using a small calibration set only, which incorporates the relevant aspects of the nonstationarities, but requires only less than 1 min of data recording. The method was tested first through an offline analysis on signals acquired across 5 days from seven able-bodied individuals and four amputees. Moreover, we also conducted a three day online experiment on eight able-bodied individuals and one amputee, assessing user performance and user-ratings of the controllability. Across different testing days, both offline and online performance improved significantly when shrinking the training model parameters by a given estimator towards the calibration set parameters. In the offline data analysis, the classification accuracy remained above 92% over five days with the proposed approach, whereas it decreased to 75% without adaptation. Similarly, in the online study, with the proposed approach the performance increased by 25% compared to a test without adaptation. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can contribute to improve robustness of myoelectric pattern recognition methods in daily life applications.

RANDOM CHORD IN A CIRCLE AND BERTRAND'S PARADOX: NEW GENERATION METHOD, EXTREME BEHAVIOUR AND LENGTH MOMENTS

Vidovic, Zoran Korean Mathematical Society 2021 대한수학회보 Vol.58 No.2

In this paper a new generating procedure of a random chord is presented. This problem has its roots in the Bertrand's paradox. A study of the limit behaviour of its maximum length and the rate of convergence is conducted. In addition, moments of record values of random chord length are obtained for this case, as well as other cases of solutions of Bertrand's paradox.

Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid Supplementation on Plasma Adiponectin Levels and Some Metabolic Risk Factors in Patients with Schizophrenia

        Bojana Vidovic,SrCan Milovanovic,Aleksandra Stefanovic,Jelena Kotur-Stevuljevic,Marija Takic,Jasmina Debeljak-Marta cic,Maja Pantovic,Bri zita ÐorCevic 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.1

Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived plasma protein with insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory properties and is suggested to be a biomarker of metabolic disturbances. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on plasma adiponectin and some metabolic risk factors in patients with schizophrenia. The plasma adipokine levels (adiponectin and leptin), routine biochemical and anthropometric parameters, markers of oxidative stress, and the serum phospholipid fatty acid profile in eighteen schizophrenic patients at baseline, in the middle, and at the end of a 3-month long supplementation period with ALA (500 mg daily) were determined. A significant increase in the plasma adiponectin concentrations, as well as a decrease in fasting glucose and aspartate aminotransferase activity (AST), was found. Baseline AST activity was independently correlated with the adiponectin concentrations. Our data show that ALA can improve plasma adiponectin levels and may play a potential role in the treatment of metabolic risk factor in patients with schizophrenia. Future randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these preliminary investigations.

Prediction of the remaining service life of existing concrete bridges in infrastructural networks based on carbonation and chloride ingress

        Zambon, Ivan,Vidovic, Anja,Strauss, Alfred,Matos, Jose,Friedl, Norbert Techno-Press 2018 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.21 No.3

The second half of the 20th century was marked with a significant raise in amount of railway bridges in Austria made of reinforced concrete. Today, many of these bridges are slowly approaching the end of their envisaged service life. Current methodology of assessment and evaluation of structural condition is based on visual inspections, which, due to its subjectivity, can lead to delayed interventions, irreparable damages and additional costs. Thus, to support engineers in the process of structural evaluation and prediction of the remaining service life, the Austrian Federal Railways (${\ddot{O}}$ BB) commissioned the formation of a concept for an anticipatory life cycle management of engineering structures. The part concerning concrete bridges consisted of forming a bridge management system (BMS) in a form of a web-based analysis tool, known as the LeCIE_tool. Contrary to most BMSs, where prediction of a condition is based on Markovian models, in the LeCIE_tool, the time-dependent deterioration mechanisms of chloride- and carbonation-induced corrosion are used as the most common deterioration processes in transportation infrastructure. Hence, the main aim of this article is to describe the background of the introduced tool, with a discussion on exposure classes and crucial parameters of chloride ingress and carbonation models. Moreover, the article presents a verification of the generated analysis tool through service life prediction on a dozen of bridges of the Austrian railway network, as well as a case study with a more detailed description and implementation of the concept applied.

Fatty Acid Profiles of Four Wild Mushrooms and Their Potential Benefits for Hypertension Treatment

        Ibrahim Mujic,Zoran Zekovic,Senka Vidovic,Marija Radojkovic,Jelena Z ˇ ivkovic,Dejan GoCevac 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.11

Mushrooms are useful in balancing human diet and treating different health problems. The main determinant of the fluidity of erythrocyte membranes and rheologic properties of blood is the lipid composition of the membrane, which directly depends on lipids present in the diet. Lipid profiles of 4 European wild edible mushrooms, as well as the ability of mushroom lipids to modify the fluidity of erythrocyte membrane, were examined by using gas chromatography–mass spectometry, gas chromatography–flame ionization detector, and electron paramagnetic resonance spin probing technique. Lipids from 2 species—Macrolepiota procera and Collybia platyphylla—provoked an increase in erythrocyte membrane fluidity. Therefore, introduction of these and other wild mushrooms with similar lipid profiles to the human diet could be very beneficial in the treatment of hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases related to decreased fluidity of erythrocyte membranes.

Short-Term Consumption of Pomegranate Juice Alleviates Some Metabolic Disturbances in Overweight Patients with Dyslipidemia

        Milica Kojadinovic,Marija Glibetic,Vesna Vucic,Milica Popovic,Nevena Vidovic,Jasmina Debeljak-Marta cic,Aleksandra Arsic 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Journal of medicinal food Vol.24 No.9

Pomegranate juice (PJ) has potential positive effects in patients with metabolic disturbances due to a high content of polyphenols. The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of a 2-week consumption of dietary doses of PJ on blood pressure, lipid metabolism, and oxidative stress markers in overweight patients with dyslipidemia. Twenty-four patients, 8 males and 16 females, 40–60 years of age, with established overweight and dyslipidemia were randomly assigned into intervention group, who consumed 300 mL of PJ daily for 2 weeks, or control group. After 2 weeks of juice intake, intervention group had significantly lower diastolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, aminotransferase, and activity of glutathione peroxidase. Furthermore, patients who consumed PJ had reduced percentage of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3, DHA) in plasma phospholipids and increased estimated activity of stearoyl-CoA desaturase. In erythrocytes, we found a significant increase in the levels of dihomo-γ- linolenic acid (20:3n-6, DGLA) and DHA, as well as in estimated activity of Δ6 desaturase, and a decrease in estimated activity of Δ5 desaturase. These results show that even a short-term consumption of dietary doses of PJ exerts beneficial effects and affects lipid metabolism in overweight patients with dyslipidemia.
