Adsorption of malachite green in aqueous solution onto sodium carbonate treated rice husk

Upendra Kumar,Binod Kumar 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.8

The feasibility of using rice husk for removing malachite green (MG) from aqueous solutions has been investigated as a low cost and an eco-friendly adsorbent. The effect of chemical treatment of rice husk by sodium carbonate was investigated through SEM and FTIR. As well, the effect of various factors like rotational speed, pH value of solution, temperature, initial concentration of dye, dose of adsorbent, contact time on the adsorption of MG was examined in batch experiments. Adsorption isotherms, kinetics, mass transfer and rate limiting steps are studied in detail. Adsorption thermodynamic parameters, activation energy and isosteric heat of adsorption were also studied. The adsorption was a spontaneous, endothermic and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The mechanism of adsorption and the COD aspect in deciding the effectiveness of the biomaterial as an adsorbent for dyes has also to be taken into account.

Upendra N. Dash and Saroj Kumar Paul 사단법인 한국질량분석학회 2012 Mass spectrometry letters Vol.3 No.3

The hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain and the polar sulfate group confer surfactant properties and enable them to beused as anionic surfactants. Anionic surfactants (AS) are known for their adverse impact on environment, particularly on aquaticecosystem. In the present study a fast, sensitive and selective method for the determination and subsequent quantification of sixanionic surfactants was developed using hydrophilic interactive liquid chromatography (HILIC) coupled to a electrospray ionization(ESI) mass spectrometer (MS), in the concentration range 15-20 μg/L. The capability of the method was establishedusing regression analysis and ANOVA. The method performance was evaluated by analyzing real time surface water spiked with1-dodecyl hydrogen sulfate at 15 μg/L. Combined efficiency of solid phase extraction and MS detection established recovery of89% in presence of natural matrix. These results point out that HILIC coupled to multistage MS procedures can be a powerfultechnique for environmental applications concerning the screening of polar contaminants.

      • Development of a self-assessment tool for resident doctors’ communication skills in India

        Upendra Baitha,Piyush Ranjan,Siddharth Sarka,Charu Aro,Archana Kumar,Sada Nand Dwivedi,Asmita Patil,Nayer Jamshed 한국보건의료인국가시험원 2019 보건의료교육평가 Vol.16 No.-

PurposeEffective communication skills are essential for resident doctors to provide optimum patient care. This study was conducted to develop and validate a questionnaire for the self-assessment of resident doctors’ communication skills in India. MethodsThis was a mixed-methods study conducted in 2 phases. The first phase consisted of questionnaire development, including the identification of relevant literature, focus group discussions with residents and experts from clinical specialties, and pre-testing of the questionnaire. The second phase involved administering the questionnaire survey to 95 residents from the Departments of Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India in April 2019. Internal consistency was tested and the factor structure was analyzed to test construct validity. ResultsThe questionnaire consisted of 3 sections: (A) 4 items on doctor-patient conflicts and the role of communication skills in avoiding these conflicts, (B) 29 items on self-assessment of communication skills in different settings, and (C) 8 items on barriers to practicing good communication skills. Sections B and C had good internal consistency (Cronbach α: 0.885 and 0.771, respectively). Section C had a 2-factor solution, and the barriers were classified as ‘training’ and ‘infrastructure’ factors. ConclusionThis appears to be a valid assessment tool of resident doctors’ communication skills, with potential utility for identifying gaps in communication skills and developing communication skills modules.

Identification of Degradation Products in the Phosphodiesterase (PDE-4) Inhibitor Roflumilast Using High Resolution Mass Spectrometry and Density Functional Theory Calculations

        ( Saroj Kumar Paul ),( Upendra N. Dash ) 한국질량분석학회 2015 Mass spectrometry letters Vol.6 No.2

Roflumilast analogs are a group of drugs which act as selective photodiesterase (PDE-4) inhibitor for the treatment severe chronic pulmonary disease associated with chronic brochnonities. Structural identification of degradation products using high resolution mass spectrometry and theoretical investigation by density functional theory have been successfully carried out on roflumilast to identify four degradation products namely, 3,5-dichloropyridin-4-amine, N-(3,5-dichloropyridin-4-yl)-4-(difluoromethoxy)-3-hydroxy benzamide, N-(3,5-dichloropyridin-4-yl)-3-(cyclopropylmethoxy)-4-(difluoromethoxy) benzamide and 3-(cyclopropylmethoxy)-N- (3,5-dichloro-1-oxidopyridin-4-yl)-4-(difluoro methoxy) benzamide, generated in alkali, acidic and oxidative conditions.

IMPULSIVE ENERGY RELEASE AND NON-THERMAL EMISSION IN A CONFINED M4.0 FLARE TRIGGERED BY RAPIDLY EVOLVING MAGNETIC STRUCTURES

        Kushwaha, Upendra,Joshi, Bhuwan,Cho, Kyung-Suk,Veronig, Astrid,Tiwari, Sanjiv Kumar,Mathew, S. K. IOP Publishing 2014 The Astrophysical journal Vol.791 No.1

We present observations of a confined M4.0 flare from NOAA 11302 on 2011 September 26. Observations at high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolution from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, and Nobeyama Radioheliograph observations enabled us to explore the possible triggering and energy release processes of this flare despite its very impulsive behavior and compact morphology. The flare light curves exhibit an abrupt rise of non-thermal emission with co-temporal hard X-ray (HXR) and microwave (MW) bursts that peaked instantly without any precursor emission. This stage was associated with HXR emission up to 200 keV that followed a power law with photon spectral index (gamma) similar to 3. Another non-thermal peak, observed 32 s later, was more pronounced in the MW flux than the HXR profiles. Dual peaked structures in the MW and HXR light curves suggest a two-step magnetic reconnection process. Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images exhibit a sequential evolution of the inner and outer core regions of magnetic loop systems while the overlying loop configuration remained unaltered. Combined observations in HXR, (E) UV, and Ha provide support for flare models involving the interaction of coronal loops. The magnetograms obtained by the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager reveal emergence of magnetic flux that began similar to five hr before the flare. However, the more crucial changes in the photospheric magnetic flux occurred about one minute prior to the flare onset with opposite polarity magnetic transients appearing at the early flare location within the inner core region. The spectral, temporal, and spatial properties of magnetic transients suggest that the sudden changes in the small-scale magnetic field have likely triggered the flare by destabilizing the highly sheared pre-flare magnetic configuration.

Nirban Laskar,Upendra Kumar 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.8

In the present study sodium carbonate modified Bambusa tulda was utilised for the removal of crystal violet dye from aqueoussolution. The functional group characterization and the surface morphology was done by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). It confirms the hydroxyl groups and carboxyl group present on the surface ofmodified Bambusa tulda. The optimum condition for the removal of crystal violet was taken place at pH 7, 200 rpm, dose at 10gm/l,initial concentration 50 mg/l, at equilibrium time 60 minutes and 298 K temperature with maximum adsorption capacity of 20.84 mg/gm. The adsorption of crystal violet by modified Bambusa tulda best fits in Langmuir isotherm model with R2 value 0.924 andPseudo 2nd order rate equation model with R2 value of 0.999. Other parameters like isosteric heat analysis, thermodynamics profileand activation energy were investigated. Thus, modified Bambusa tulda can be an efficient and economically used as an alternativefor activated carbon for the removal of crystal violet from waste water.

Addressing Stretch Myelopathy in Multilevel Cervical Kyphosis with Posterior Surgery Using Cervical Pedicle Screws

        Bijjawara Mahesh,Bidre Upendra,Shekarappa Vijay,Kumar Arun,Reddy Srinivasa 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.6

Study Design: Technique description and retrospective data analysis. Purpose: To describe the technique of cervical kyphosis correction with partial facetectomies and evaluate the outcome of singlestage posterior decompression and kyphosis correction in multilevel cervical myelopathy. Overview of Literature: Kyphosis correction in multilevel cervical myelopathy involves anterior and posterior surgery. With the advent of cervical pedicle screw-rod instrumentation, single-stage posterior kyphosis correction is feasible and can address stretch myelopathy by posterior shortening. Methods: Nine patients underwent single-stage posterior decompression and kyphosis correction for multilevel cervical myelopathy using cervical pedicle screw instrumentation from March 2011 to February 2014 and were evaluated preoperatively and postoperatively with modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) scoring and computed tomography scans for radiological measurements. Kyphosis assessment was made with Ishihara curvature index and C2–C7 Cobb’s angle. The linear length of the spinal canal and the actual spinal canal length were also evaluated. The average follow-up was 40.56 months (range, 20 to 53 months). Results: The average preoperative C2–7 Cobb’s angle of 6.3° (1° to 12°) improved to 2° (10° to –9°). Ishihara index improved from –15.8% (–30.5% to –4.7%) to –3.66% (–14.5% to +12.6%). The actual spinal canal length decreased from 83.64 mm (range, 76.8 to 91.82 mm) to 82.68 mm (range, 75.85 to 90.78 mm). The preoperative mJOA score of 7.8 (range, 3 to 11) improved to 15.0 (range, 13 to 17). Conclusions: Single-stage posterior decompression and kyphosis correction using cervical pedicle screws for multilevel cervical myelopathy may address stretch myelopathy, in addition to decompression in the transverse plane. However, cervical lordosis was not achieved with this method as predictably as by the anterior approach. The present study shows evidence of mild shortening of cervical spinal canal and a positive correlation between canal shortening and clinical improvement.
