Improvement of aged lower eyelid by insertion of polydioxanone threads

Orbital fat protrusion, skin laxity with wrinkling, and tear trough deformity with hyperpigmentation of the lower eyelid make individuals appear fatigued and elderly. For cosmetic correction of the aged lower eyelid, either invasive blepharoplasties or less invasive procedures such as filler, high frequency device therapy or laser therapy are popularly performed. Currently in Korea, polydioxanone (PDO) thread is commonly utilized to tighten and lift the aged face. We present a case report demonstrating improvement of orbital fat protrusion, skin laxity with wrinkles, and tear trough deformity following insertion of PDO threads into the lower eyelid of an aging patient. Twenty PDO threads (6.0 USP, 30 mm in length, New Up PDO suture Kit ?? produced by Meditronic Dongjun) were inserted at 1-mm intervals into the submuscular layer and the protruded orbital fat pads of both lower eyelids of a 54-year-old patient. Two months following intervention, the patient presented with flattening of the protruded orbital fat, skin tightening and wrinkle improvement, volume restoration in tear trough deformity, and skin whitening; the patient was satisfied with the results of the therapy. Common complications such as persistent swelling, hematoma, skin irregularity, and infection were not observed during follow-up assessments. Our findings suggest that PDO thread insertion may be a useful, non-invasive procedure to rejuvenate the aged lower eyelid of patients with anxieties regarding potential complications due to invasive lower blepharoplasty.
Influence of Tyrosol on Cell Growth Inhibition of KB Human Oral Cancer Cells

Tyrosol, a phenylethanoid and a derivative of phenethyl alcohol, possesses various biological properties, such as anti-oxidative and cardioprotective activity. Olive oil is the principal source of tyrosol in the human diet. However, so far the anti-cancer activity of tyrosol has not yet been well defined. This study therefore undertakes to examine the cytotoxic activity and the mechanism of cell death exhibited by tyrosol in KB human oral cancer cells. Treatment of KB cells with tyrosol induced the cell growth inhibition in a concentration- and a time-dependent manner. Furthermore, the treatment of tyrosol induced nuclear condensation and fragmentation of KB cells. Tyrosol also promoted proteolytic cleavage of procaspase-3, -7, -8 and –9, increasing the amounts of cleaved caspase-3, -7, -8 and –9. In addition, tyrosol increased the levels of cleaved PARP in KB cells. These results suggest that tyrosol induces the suppression of cell growth and cell apoptosis in KB human oral cancer cells, and is therefore a potential candidate for anti-cancer drug discovery.

Objectives: This study was undertaken to investigate the source of infection and mode of transmission of shigellosis, which occurred sporadically among residents and students in a subcounty of Cheongwon county, Chungbuk province, Korea, from June 4 to July 3 2003. Methods: 692 subjects completed a questionnaire and provided a swab for microbiological examinations,and 7 environmental specimens were examined for bacterial organisms. PFGE (pulsed-field gel electrophoresis) and fingerprinting were performed to find the genetic relationship among the temporally associated sporadic isolates. Results: A total of 29 patients had symptoms consistent with the case definition, with 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases. The frequency of diarrhea was 6 times or more a day (80.8%), with a duration of 1 to 4 days (88.5%) in most cases. The most common symptoms accompanying the diarrhea were fever (80.9%) followed by abdominal pain (76.9%), headache (65.4%), chill (61.5%), vomiting (46.2%) and tenesmus (15.4%). The epidemic curve was characteristic of a person-to-person transmission. The PFGE and fingerprinting demonstrated identical or similar DNA patterns among the 3 Shigella sonnei isolates (A51, A53 and A61 types) found in this outbreak. Conclusion: A genetically identical strain of S. sonnei was estimated to be the cause of this outbreak, and the mode of transmission was most likely person-to-person.

In order to investigate the low liquor ratio dyeing method of poly(ethylene tereqphthalte)(PET) fiber, a basic study on two phase dyeing method was studied. The results are as follows; 1. Toluene, xylene, perchloroethylene, tetrachloroethane, and monochlorobenzene are effective as solvent, being considered their boiling points, solubilities in water, and the solubility of dye. 2. Dye partition quantity from solvents to water was proportional to the dissolved quantity of dye in solvents. 3. The crystallinity change of PET fiber dyed by two phase dyeing method had little difference from that of fiber dyed in water. 4. Initial dyeing rate of two phase dyeing method was greater than that of dyeing in water, and the solubility of dye in solvents had much influence on initial dyeing rate, but bath ratio had little. 5. Polymer coagulant was effective to the purification of dyeing waste-water. It was much easier because there was no auxiliaries in the two phase dyeing bath.
