In vitro comparison of two different materials for the repair of urethan dimethacrylate denture bases

        Tonguc Sulun,Ergun Bozdag,Emin Sunbuloglu,Onur Geckili,Hakan Bilhan,Altug Cilingir 대한치과보철학회 2013 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.5 No.4

PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the flexural properties of a recently introduced urethane dimethacrylate denture base material (Eclipse) after being repaired with two different materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two repair groups and a control group consisting of 10 specimens each were generated. The ES group was repaired with auto-polymerizing polymer. The EE group was repaired with the Eclipse. The E group was left intact as a control group. A 3-point bending test device which was set to travel at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min was used. Specimens were loaded until fracture occurred and the mean displacement, maximum load, flexural modulus and flexural strength values and standard deviations were calculated for each group and the data were statistically analyzed. The results were assessed at a significance level of P<.05. RESULTS The mean "displacement", "maximum load before fracture", "flexural strength" and "flexural modulus" rates of Group E were statistically significant higher than those of Groups ES and EE, but no significant difference (P>.05) was found between the mean values of Group ES and EE. There was a statistically significant positive relation (P<.01) between the displacement and maximum load of Group ES (99.5%), Group EE (94.3%) and Group E (84.4%). CONCLUSION The more economic and commonly used self-curing acrylic resin can be recommended as an alternative repair material for Eclipse denture bases.

Knowledge about HPV, relation between HPV and cervix cancer and acceptance of HPV vaccine in women in eastern region of Turkey

        Esra Tonguc,Tayfun Gungor,Turgut Var,Ebru Kavak,Munihe Yucel,Ozlem Uzunlar 대한부인종양학회 2013 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.24 No.1

Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the knowledge of the women living in the eastern region of Turkey about human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervix cancer and their approaches to HPV vaccine. Methods: The questionnaire forms were distributed to 1,052 patients who applied to the Gynecology Department of Elazig Training and Research Hospital. The subjects were recruited from the general gynecology outpatient clinic of the hospital. The patients from sexually transmitted disease and oncology outpatient clinics were not included in the study. The information about 945 women who completely filled in the questionnaire form was included into the study. The questions set forth in the questionnaire form consisting of 20 questions were prepared by taking the studies previously performed as model. Results: Ninety-five percent of the women were married and 83.5% were housewives (unemployed). Thirteen percent of the women were illiterate, only 12% were graduated from university. Seventy-four percent of the women did not hear about HPV,78.4% did not know about HPV vaccine, 63% did not know about the fact that some viruses cause cancer, and 83% did not know about the relation between HPV and cervix cancer. According to the multivariate analysis, free-of-charge vaccination, vaccinated relatives or friends, graduation from university and being under the age of 25 predict to accept the vaccine for themselves. Conclusion: The young population and the women who graduated from university seem to be more well-informed about HPV and more sensitive about being vaccinated. In addition, free vaccination will ensure the expansion of the vaccine.

Flexural properties of a light-cure and a self-cure denture base materials compared to conventional alternatives

        Emre Mumcu,Altug Cilingir,Burc Gencel,Tonguc S?l?n 대한치과보철학회 2011 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.3 No.3

PURPOSE A new light curing urethane dimethacrylate and a cold curing resin with simpler and faster laboratory procedures may have even improved flexural properties. This study investigated the 3-point flexural strengths and flexural moduli of two alternate base materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cold curing resin (Weropress) and a light curing urethane dimethacrylate base material (Eclipse). Along with Eclipse and Weropress, a high impact resin (Lucitone199) and three conventional base materials (QC 20, Meliodent and Paladent 20) were tested. A 3-point bending test was used to determine the flexural strengths and flexural moduli. The mean displacement, maximum load, flexural modulus and flexural strength values and standard deviations for each group were analyzed by means of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (with mean difference significant at the 0.05 level). Post hoc analyses (Scheffe test) were carried out to determine the differences between the groups at a confidence level of 95%. RESULTS Flexural strength, displacement and force maximum load values of Eclipse were significantly different from other base materials. Displacement values of QC 20 were significantly different from Lucitone 199 and Weropress. CONCLUSION The flexural properties and simpler processing technique of Eclipse system presents an advantageous alternative to conventional base resins and Weropress offers another simple laboratory technique.

Facile and Fast Photo-Polymerization of N-Vinyl Caprolactam via UV-C Irradiation

        Habil Uzun,Ahmet Gungor,?smail Kutlugun Akbay,Tonguc Ozdemir 한국고분자학회 2021 폴리머 Vol.45 No.1

Different polymerization techniques of poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PNVCL) have been reported including the photo polymerization via ultraviolet (UV). However, photo polymerization of PNVCL via UV-C (wavelength of 254 nm) has not been reported. In this study, N-vinyl caprolactam was polymerized via UV-C irradiation at different time periods. Fouirer transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that the PNVCL has been successfully synthesized via the photo polymerization method. The optimum conversion time was found as about 70 min and the conversion was found as 71.2%. Gels displayed different swelling behavior at temperatures above and below lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and swelling analysis, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were performed to investigate the phase change behavior. It was observed that LCST of the synthesized gels occurs between 31 and 35 oC determined by DSC analysis, which is also consistent with DLS and swelling analysis results. In conclusion, a facile and short time period polymerization technique is reported via use of UV-C photo polymerization technique.

Investigations on borate glasses within SBC-Bx system for gamma-ray shielding applications

        Rammah, Y.S.,Tekin, H.O.,Sriwunkum, C.,Olarinoye, I.,Alalawi, Amani,Al-Buriahi, M.S.,Nutaro, T.,Tonguc, Baris T. Korean Nuclear Society 2021 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.53 No.1

This paper examines gamma-ray shielding properties of SBC-Bx glass system with the chemical composition of 40SiO2-10B2O3-xBaO-(45-x)CaO- yZnO- zMgO (where x = 0, 10, 20, 30, and 35 mol% and y = z = 6 mol%). Mass attenuation coefficient (µ/ρ) which is an essential parameter to study gamma-ray shielding properties was obtained in the photon energy range of 0.015-15 MeV using PHITS Monte Carlo code for the proposed glasses. The obtained results were compared with those calculated by WinXCOM program. Both the values of PHITS code and WinXCOM program were observed in very good agreement. The (µ/ρ values were then used to derive mean free path (MFP), electron density (Neff), effective atomic number (Zeff), and half value layer (HVL) for all the glasses involved. Additionally, G-P method was employed to estimate exposure buildup factor (EBF) for each glass in the energy range of 0.015-15 MeV up to penetration depths of 40 mfp. The results reveal that gamma-ray shielding effectiveness of the SBC-Bx glasses evolves with increasing BaO content in the glass sample. Such that SBC-B35 glass has superior shielding capacity against gamma-rays among the studied glasses. Gamma-ray shielding properties of SBC-B35 glass were compared with different conventional shielding materials, commercial glasses, and newly developed HMO glasse. Therefore, the investigated glasses have potential uses in gamma shielding applications.
