MicroRNAs as Novel Biomarkers for the Diagnosis of Alzheimer`s Disease and Modern Advancements in the Treatment

Tamil Iniyan Gunasekaran,Takbum Ohn 대한의생명과학회 2015 Biomedical Science Letters Vol.21 No.1

Alzheimer"s disease is a common form of dementia occurring among the elderly population and can be identified by symptoms such as cognition impairments, memory loss and neuronal dysfunction. Alzheimer"s disease was found to be caused by the deposition of β-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. In addition, mutation in the APP (Amyloid precursor protein), Presenilin 1 (PSEN1) and Presenilin 2 (PSEN2) genes were also found to contribute to Alzheimer"s disease. Since the potential conformational diagnosis of Alzheimer"s disease requires histopathological tests on brain through autopsy, potential early diagnosis still remains challenging. In recent years, several researches have proposed the use of biomarkers for early diagnosis. In cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), β-amyloid(1-42), phosphorylated-tau and total tau were suggested to be effective biomarkers for Alzheimer"s disease diagnosis. However, a single biomarker might not be sufficient for potential diagnosis of Alzheimer"s disease. Thus, the use of RNA interference (RNAi) through microRNAs (miRNAs) has been proposed by several researchers for simultaneous analysis of several biomarkers using microarray technology. These miRNA based biomarkers can be analysed from both blood and CSF, but miRNAs from blood are advantageous over CSF as they are non-invasive and simple for collection. Moreover, the RNAi based therapeutics by siRNA (short interference RNA) or shRNA (short hairpin RNA) have also been proposed to be effective in the treatment of Alzheimer"s disease. This review describes the promising application of RNAi technology in therapeutics and as a biomarker for both Alzheimer"s disease diagnosis and treatment.

Modelling and Analysis of Elliptical Cantilever Device Using Flexure Method and Fabrication of Electrospun PVDF/BaTiO3 Nanocomposites

        Ramadoss Tamil Selvan,W. A. D. M. Jayathilaka,Amutha Chinappan,Hilaal Alam,Seeram Ramakrishna 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2020 NANO Vol.15 No.02

Cantilever-based piezoelectric has been the most preferred technique for energy harvesting and sensing application due to its simple design. The energy conversion efficiency has been continuously improved by exploring alternative cantilever geometries by increasing the stress distribution on the beam surface. In this paper, we have introduced half elliptical and full elliptical profile modification in the cantilever structure to improve and uniformly distribute the stress at the beam surface. Stress distribution characteristics of the modified cantilever beams were investigated and compared using finite element analysis. Based on the theoretical and finite element analysis, cantilever beams were fabricated using 3D print technology. Fabricated cantilever beams were then used to investigate the piezoelectric performances of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) in composite of barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles in the form of electrospun composite nanofibers. FTIR analysis shows successful conversion of alpha phase to beta phase of PVDF and PVDF/BaTiO3 nanocomposites. During 6Hz cyclic actuating experiment, maximum voltage output of 0.15 V and 1.5 nA current output were observed. The concept was proposed to replace MEMS-based sensor in hand tremor quantification to assist Parkinson disease management.

Autoclave Mediated Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Aqueous Extract of Canna indica L. Rhizome and Evaluation of Its Antimicrobial Activity

        Narayanasamy Tamil Selvi,Rangaswamy Navamathavan,김학용,Rajkumar Nirmala 한국고분자학회 2019 Macromolecular Research Vol.27 No.11

Current trends will affirm that the use of nanotechnology principles has become an important area of research today, due to the wide range of applications of these technologies in various fields and industries. By the same token, silver nanoparticles have been gaining more importance due to their optical, electrical, thermal and biological properties, when comparing these qualities to other metal nanoparticles. The use of plants for silver nanoparticle synthesis has also drawn attention from the scientific research community, because of its rapid, eco-friendly, non-pathogenic and economical protocols. Thus, in the present study, we report on the synthesis process of silver nanoparticles, by using aqueous rhizome extract of Canna indica Linn. In this case, the silver nanoparticle synthesis was performed by using a simple autoclave method. The utilization of a fixed ratio of plant extract to metal salt was prepared, and the mixture was allowed to autoclave for 15 minutes. The colour change was observed as resembling the hue of red wine, which was evidenced in the noted formation of silver nanoparticles. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) analyses. The silver nanoparticles were witnessed for any noted antimicrobial activity against the identified and selected bacterial strains.

Optimal Allocation of Distributed Generation Using Evolutionary Multi-objective Optimization

        Pon Ragothama Priya P.,Baskar S.,Tamil Selvi S.,Babulal C. K. 대한전기학회 2023 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.18 No.2

This paper proposes a new long-term planning methodology for Multi-objective Distributed Generation Placement and Sizing (MO-DGPS) aiming at a minimum energy loss, CO2 emission, overall cost, besides enhancing the system voltage stability and reliability. The MO-DGPS problem has been reformulated to incorporate the uncertainties such as intermittent power generation of renewable DG (RDG), and forced outages of Distributed Generation (DG) units, the cost of reactive power imports from the substation with the conventional DGPS problem description. Moreover, the problem also considers time-varying loads, and load growth. The objective of the proposed modified problem formulation is to identify the optimal DG placement, sizing and the selling price of its generated power to the utility by minimizing the Distribution Companies cost and maximizing the DG Investor’s profits simultaneously, considering various constraints and uncertainties. A fast-elitist Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II has been employed to solve the reformulated MO-DGPS problem. The IEEE 33-Node and practical Tamil Nadu Electricity Board 84-Node radial distribution systems have been utilized as test systems in order to validate the proposed methodology. Performance analysis has been done on the results of a MO-DGPS problem for different combinations of RDG with conventional DG units. The results of these different scenarios have been compared with the results of recent research reports too. Among investigations of various scenarios, it is found that the right combination of biomass and conventional DG units provides better objective values and performance indices, minimum energy loss and CO2 emission.

Ahmad, Norain,Sutan, Rosnah,Tamil, Azmi Mohd,Hajib, Noriah Korean Academy of Child Health Nursing 2021 Child Health Nursing Research Vol.27 No.4

Purpose: This study aimed to identify small for gestational age (SGA) infants' growth patterns, nutritional status, and associated factors. Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted at primary-care child health clinics in Greater Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The sample consisted of infants who fulfilled the criteria and were born in 2019. The anthropometric data of infants were assessed at birth and at 1, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Results: A total of 328 infants were analysed. In total, 27.7%(n=91) of the subjects were SGA infants, and 237 of them were not. Significant differences in the median weight-for-age and length-for-age z-scores were observed between SGA and non-SGA infants at birth, 1 month, 6 months, and 12 months. There was a significant difference between the growth patterns of SGA and non-SGA infants. Birth weight and sex significantly predicted the nutritional status(stunting and underweight) of SGA infants during their first year of life. Conclusion: SGA infants can catch up to achieve normal growth during their first year of life. Even though the nutritional status of SGA infants trends worse than non-SGA infants, adequate infant birth weight monitoring and an emphasis on nutritional advice are crucial for maintaining well-being.

Review of Simultaneous Double Stenting Using Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Biliary Drainage Techniques in Combined Gastric Outlet and Biliary Obstructions

        Hao Chi Zhang,Monica Tamil,Keshav Kukreja,Shashideep Singhal 대한소화기내시경학회 2020 Clinical Endoscopy Vol.53 No.2

Concomitant malignant gastric outlet obstruction and biliary obstruction may occur in patients with advanced cancers affecting theseanatomical regions. This scenario presents a unique challenge to the endoscopist in selecting an optimal management approach. Wesought to determine the effcacy and safety of endoscopic techniques for treating simultaneous gastric outlet and biliary obstruction(GOBO) with endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) guidance for biliary drainage. An extensive literature search for peer-reviewed publishedcases yielded 6 unique case series that either focused on or included the use of EUS-guided biliary drainage (EUS-BD) withsimultaneous gastroduodenal stenting. In our composite analysis, a total of 51 patients underwent simultaneous biliary drainagethrough EUS, with an overall reported technical success rate of 100% for both duodenal stenting and biliary drainage. EUS-guidedcholedochoduodenostomy or EUS-guided hepaticogastrostomy was employed as the initial technique. In 34 cases in which clinicalsuccess was ascribed, 100% derived clinical benefit. The common adverse effects of double stenting included cholangitis, stent migration, bleeding, food impaction, and pancreatitis. We conclude that simultaneous double stenting with EUS-BD and gastroduodenal stentingfor GOBO is associated with high success rates. It is a feasible and practical alternative to percutaneous biliary drainage or surgery forpalliation in patients with associated advanced malignancies.
