The Effects of MRI on Mouse Embryos During Fetal Stage

The effects of Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on mouse embryos at the early stage of organogenesis were investigated. Pregnant ICR mice were exposed on day 8 of gestation to MRI at 0.5 T for 0.5 hour to 3 hours. The mortality rates of embryos or fetuses, the incidence of external malformations, fetal body weight and sex ratio were observed at day 18 of gestation. A significant increase in embryonic mortality was observed after exposure to either 0.5 T MRI for 0.5 hour or 2 hours. However, the exposure to MRI for 1 hour or 3 hours did not induce any significant increase in embryonic mortality when compared with control. External malformations such as exencephaly, cleft palate and anomalies of tail were observed in all experimental groups exposed to each MRI. A statistically significant increase of external malformations was observed in all groups treated with 0.5 T MRI for 0.5 hour and 3 hours. The incidence of external malformations in the mice group exposed to 0.5 T MRI for 0.5-hour was found to be higher than those of mice group exposed to 0.5 T MRI for 2 hours. The effects of MRI on the external malformations might not to be dose-dependent. There was no statistically significant difference in fetal body weight and sex ratio among each MRI exposure groups.
Multi-chain slip-spring simulations for polyisoprene melts

The multi-chain slip-spring (MCSS) model is a coarse-grained molecular model developed for efficient simulations of the dynamics of entangled polymers. In this study, we examined the model for the viscoelasticity of polyisoprene (PI) melts, for which the data are available in the literature. We determined the conversion factor for the molecular weight from the fitting of the molecular weight dependence of zero-shear viscosity. According to the obtained value, we calculated the linear viscoelasticity of several linear PI melts to determine the units of time and modulus. Based on the conversion factors thus determined, we predicted linear viscoelasticity of 6-arm star PI melts, and viscosity growth under high shear for linear PI melts. The predictions were in good agreement with the data, demonstrating the validity of the method. The conversion factors determined were consistent with those reported for polystyrene melts earlier, whereas the relations between the conversion factors are still unknown.

Intense excimer laser irradiation of polymer films results in expansion and the following contraction , recovering ithe initial flat surface. The morphological dynamics is meausred directly by nanosecond time-resolved interferometry for polystyrene(PS), polyurethane, and polyimide films. The expansion proceeds with a speed of a few nm/ns , while the contraction depends upon the polymer ; very low contraction for PS, rapid 2 component shrinking for polyurethane, and rapid monotonous decay for polymide. These characteristic behavior are considered from viewpoints of interpenetrating structures of polymers, glass-rubber phase transitioni, thermal diffusion, and photothermal mechanism.
