Intracranial Metaplastic Meningioma : Clinical and Radiological Characteristics of 11 Cases

        Taehoon Kim,Jin Wook Kim,So Young Ji,Ho Kang,Kyung-Min Kim,Yong Hwy Kim,Chul-Kee Park,Seung Hong Choi,Sung-Hye Park 대한신경외과학회 2020 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.63 No.5

Objective : Metaplastic meningioma is an extremely rare subtype of World Health Organization (WHO) grade I meningioma. It has distinctive histological subtypes according to its own mesenchymal components. Owing to its scarcity, clinical or radiological features of a metaplastic meningioma are poorly described. Methods : Between 2004 and 2018, we analyzed total 1814 cases surgically proven meningioma for 15 years. Among them, metaplastic meningioma was diagnosed in 11 cases. Magnetic resonance images were taken for all patients, and computed tomography scan was taken for 10 patients. Results : WHO grade I meningiomas were 1376 cases (75.9%), 354 cases (19.5%) in WHO grade II, and 84 cases (4.6%) in WHO grade III meningiomas. Metaplastic meningioma was 11 cases as 0.8% of WHO grade I meningioma and 0.6% of entire meningiomas for 15 years. Among the entire 11 metaplastic meningiomas, five tumors (45%) were diagnosed as a lipomatous subtype with rich fat components, four (36%) as an osseous subtype with extensive bone formation and two (18%) as a xanthomatous subtype. There was no cartilaginous subtype metaplastic meningioma in our study. Lipomatous and osseous metaplastic meningioma have peculiar radiological characteristics according to mesenchymal components. Conclusion : We investigated a rare metaplastic meningioma subtype based on our 15-year surgical experience with meningiomas. Further investigation will be necessary for the clear clarification of tumor nature of this rare tumor.

      • MATLAB/Simulink Pulse-Echo Ultrasound System Simulator Based on Experimentally Validated Models

        Taehoon Kim,Sangmin Shin,Hyongmin Lee,Hyunsook Lee,Heewon Kim,Eunhee Shin,Suhwan Kim IEEE 2016 and Frequency Control Vol.63 No.2

<P>A flexible clinical ultrasound system must operate with different transducers, which have characteristic impulse responses and widely varying impedances. The impulse response determines the shape of the high-voltage pulse that is transmitted and the specifications of the front-end electronics that receive the echo; the impedance determines the specification of the matching network through which the transducer is connected. System-level optimization of these subsystems requires accurate modeling of pulse-echo (two-way) response, which in turn demands a unified simulation of the ultrasonics and electronics. In this paper, this is realized by combining MATLAB/Simulink models of the high-voltage transmitter, the transmission interface, the acoustic subsystem which includes wave propagation and reflection, the receiving interface, and the front-end receiver. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our simulator, the models are experimentally validated by comparing the simulation results with the measured data from a commercial ultrasound system. This simulator could be used to quickly provide system-level feedback for an optimized tuning of electronic design parameters.</P>

        ( Taehoon Yim ),( Sang-un Kim ),( Sangmi Park ),( Jeong-hoon Lim ),( Hee-yeon Jung ),( Jang-hee Cho ),( Chan-duck Kim ),( Yong-lim Kim ),( Man-hoon Han ),( Yong-jin Kim ),( Ji-young Choi ),( Sun-hee P 대한신장학회 2020 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.39 No.1

Background: The worldwide incidence of renal disease diagnosed by a kidney biopsy varies with age, race, sex, and region. Owing to a lack of studies and limited research resources for this disease in Korea, we investigated renal disease patterns by analyzing data from kidney biopsies performed over 13 years in a university-based teaching hospital in Korea. Methods: Among 2,053 kidney biopsies performed from 2001 to 2013 at Kyungpook National University Hospital, 1,924 were retrospectively analyzed for histopathologic, demographic, and clinical data as well as laboratory results. Results: Among the 1,924 studied kidney biopsies, 1,078 were males (56.0%) and the mean age was 37.7 ± 16.5 years. Asymptomatic urinary abnormalities were the most common clinical manifestation (62.5%). Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) was the most common primary glomerular disease (37.4%), followed by minimal change disease (MCD), membranous nephropathy (MN), focal segmental glomerulonephritis and crescentic glomerulonephritis. Secondary glomerular diseases accounted for 10.3% of the total biopsies, with lupus nephritis being the most common (4.6%) followed by Henoch-Schönlein purpura nephritis and diabetic nephropathy. The most common cause of nephrotic syndrome was MCD (42.1%) followed by MN. Among patients seropositive for hepatitis B or C, IgAN (28.3% and 21.4%, respectively) was the most common cause. Conclusion: IgAN and lupus nephritis were the most common primary and secondary glomerular diseases, respectively. Race, region, and practice patterns may affect renal disease patterns in different cohorts.

      • Flexible double-cage hoist for high operational efficiency in tall building construction

        Kim, Taehoon,Lee, Ung-Kyun,Kim, Seung Woo,Lim, Hyunsu,Kim, Chang-Won,Cho, Hunhee,Kang, Kyung-In Elsevier 2018 AUTOMATION IN CONSTRUCTION - Vol.96 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>High operational efficiency in the use of hoists is crucial for the successful completion of high-rise building projects. Simply increasing the number of hoists may not be possible because of insufficient space or budget limits. However, adopting the “double-deck” concept can be an effective approach to improving the operational efficiency of hoists in projects with such constraints. This study proposes a flexible double-cage hoist for use in such projects. In a case study, we found that combining the proposed hoist with existing single-cage hoists enabled a smaller number of hoists to achieve significantly higher efficiency at lower cost than a group of single-cage hoists. The optimal combination showed a 16.6% decrease in total operational costs and a 7.9% increase in operational efficiency. Using the proposed hoist could therefore enable the successful completion of high-rise building projects at lower cost.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The flexible double-cage hoist is proposed for high-rise building projects. </LI> <LI> The flexible double-cage hoist copes flexibly with various traffic types by using a detachable adapter. </LI> <LI> The proposed hoists decreased costs by 16.6%.and increased operational efficiency by 7.9%. </LI> <LI> This study can contribute to the successful completion of a high-rise building project by enabling reduced cost inputs and higher operational efficiency. </LI> </UL> </P>

A 4×32-Channel Neural Recording System for Deep Brain Stimulation Systems

Kim, Susie,Na, Seung-In,Yang, Youngtae,Kim, Hyunjong,Kim, Taehoon,Cho, Jun Soo,Kim, Jinhyung,Chang, Jin Woo,Kim, Suhwan The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2017 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.17 No.1

In this paper, a $4{\times}32$-channel neural recording system capable of acquiring neural signals is introduced. Four 32-channel neural recording ICs, complex programmable logic devices (CPLDs), a micro controller unit (MCU) with USB interface, and a PC are used. Each neural recording IC, implemented in $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, includes 32 channels of analog front-ends (AFEs), a 32-to-1 analog multiplexer, and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC). The mid-band gain of the AFE is adjustable in four steps, and have a tunable bandwidth. The AFE has a mid-band gain of 54.5 dB to 65.7 dB and a bandwidth of 35.3 Hz to 5.8 kHz. The high-pass cutoff frequency of the AFE varies from 18.6 Hz to 154.7 Hz. The input-referred noise (IRN) of the AFE is $10.2{\mu}V_{rms}$. A high-resolution, low-power ADC with a high conversion speed achieves a signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 50.63 dB and a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 63.88 dB, at a sampling-rate of 2.5 MS/s. The effectiveness of our neural recording system is validated in in-vivo recording of the primary somatosensory cortex of a rat.
